Wet hair to work?

Leo10 · 05/09/2017 21:23

Is it unprofessional or lazy to have wet hair in the morning?

I have curly hair and normally wash it every other morning. I need to lay off the heat and let my curls dry naturally.
But wet hair at work, I'm just not sure. Does it come across as lazy? Unprofessional?

I don't particularly like going to bed with wet hair but shall I suck it up and wash hair at night?

Thanks

I don't have an office job but I do have to look professional and presentable. Sometimes I do blow dry my hair but it is very fragile and doesn't like heat, so I try to let it dry naturally as much as possible.

I wash mine in the morning, plop and then twist up into a claw. By the time I get to work, the visible hair is 90% dry. The stuff in the claw doesn't dry until the evening but that's fine. I know the style is not super fashionable and probably not 'groomed' enough for some posters or their roles but it's fine for mine.

TeachesOfPeaches · 05/09/2017 22:20

I see a few women do this on my commute and think it looks terrible. Very lazy.

HeadDreamer · 05/09/2017 22:26

My hair is dried by the time I get to work. Shower, breakfast, then get changed. Add the commute and it's dried.

HeadDreamer · 05/09/2017 22:29

Ouch just saw the reply you said 4 hours to dry naturally. Mine takes less than an hour. Blush

Aghaidh · 05/09/2017 22:30

I was out of the shower at 6:55am and went to work at 8:30am with wet hair. Just checked it now (10:30pm) and it's still damp. I would have to stop washing my hair completely to avoid going to work with wet hair. Nothing remotely lazy about it, just the reality of curly hair.

burnishedsilver · 05/09/2017 22:30

I understand why you would do it but yes, it looks pretty unprofessional.

pigeondujour · 05/09/2017 22:40

Is it not just so uncomfortable to go out with it wet? I cringe at the thought of cold damp hair behind my ears.

OlderGolder · 05/09/2017 22:46

I'm surprised so many posters find it such a no no. Would never have thought that. I would have thought it looked clean (obviously) and natural.

donajimena · 05/09/2017 22:46

I always go to work with wet hair its usually in an up do though so the top looks dry but underneath doesn't.

Leo10 · 05/09/2017 23:06

Curly hair is just bloody hard work.

Then again I don't have the time, the patience or the inclination to spend 40 mins straightening it to then step out the front door and look like Amelia in the princess diaries pre make over. Grin

Ooh I'm going to try that pixiecurl method. I wash, dry and straighten my hair if I'm going into an office. Mine also takes 4+ hours to dry

Curly hair is a pita

JigglyTuff · 05/09/2017 23:13

For got he crucial bit - I straighten my hair the night before! And then again in the morning

Blodplod · 05/09/2017 23:16

I think the people who say it's a no no don't get what it's like to have thick curly hair! I'm like you OP, sometimes takes up to 40 mins to dry. By that I mean dry hair using a babyliss big hair dryer and 'styling' it rather than just blasting with a dryer. I'm lucky though I'm so much as it doesn't get greasy so 1 wash and good blow dry can last 4 days if the hair doesn't get damp in the rain. Prior to using this I used to leave it naturally curly and wash everyday as curls looked shite after being slept on. I used to blast the front and go to work with the back/underneath still damp.. if I didn't do this I would never have got to work!

Feawen · 05/09/2017 23:27

Far from assuming you were lazy, I'd think you were super organised and had come to work via the gym, if I happened to notice your wet hair. I find the attitude that clean, freshly washed hair is 'lazy' or 'yuk' or 'unprofessional' much more peculiar than damp hair. Though if you were actually dripping on me then I guess I might object...Grin

Peppermeant · 06/09/2017 04:07

I think it looks unprofessional to have wet hair at work (just damp okay, or wet but up okay). I can't leave mine curly for this exact reason - I'd have to wash and groom it far more regularly. I have very thick, frizzy hair and wash and fully blow dry and straighten once a week on saturday - by weds/thurs/fri following it needs to be tied back but the benefit of curly/frizzy hair is that it takes a lot longer to become greasy?

idontwannaneedthem · 06/09/2017 05:00

Very lazy and unprofessional. Not a good look.

FV45 · 06/09/2017 05:02

I washed my hair at 8pm last night. It's still damp at 5am.
I work from home now so no one gives a stuff what I look like beware the spontaneous video Skype, but when I go into the office I might have wet hair. I also run at lunch time and then shower and go straight back to work.
I don't see customers just my fellow academics and researchers.
I've never given it a second thought.

treaclesoda · 06/09/2017 05:06

An hour for hair to dry naturally? I'm green with envy.

Mine takes me nearly an hour with a hairdryer. If I leave it to dry naturally it's maybe 10 hours? If I wash it at 8pm it's still damp in the morning.

HeadDreamer · 06/09/2017 11:30

I think the people who say it's a no no don't get what it's like to have thick curly hair! Blodplod could well be. I didn't know it'll take 40min to actually dry with a hair dryer. I never judge anyone with wet hair as long as they are nice smelling and clean. I have even more sympathy now that I know how long it takes to dry it. I'll never spend 40min with a dryer, just don't have the patience.

treaclesoda my hair is poker straight. I just comb through the tangles after a wash, and let it air dry. I reckon it takes maybe 30-40min? Never actually timed it. But like Peppermeant says straight hair gets greasy very quick. I have to wash every day or every other day, depending on how hot it is.

heron98 · 06/09/2017 11:37

I do everyday. I swim before work (the pool is at work) and just tie it in a loose bun when it's wet. It's usually pretty dry after a couple of hours. I don't really care if it's professional or not, I really can't be arsed drying it (and it means I get more time in the pool).

testing123testing123 · 06/09/2017 12:09

My curly hair takes 3 hours to dry naturally, but if I do a couple of minutes with the diffuser when it's mostly dry, say after an hour and a half of air drying, it'll look dry enough for me not to worry, and this way it doesn't look too frizzy either. I never have good results with diffusing from wet to fully dry

Leo10 · 06/09/2017 12:37

It takes me over an hr to (try) to have straight hair.
30 mins to blow dry and 40 mins to straighten.
To then look like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards.
Nope I'll keep it curly

OP posts:
imjessie · 06/09/2017 12:39

If I straighten my hair I do it at night and sleep on it . Could you do that? Mine takes all day to dry completely if left on its own !!

taybert · 06/09/2017 13:00

People with curly hair often use products that make it appear a bit "wet" looking anyway. I really wouldn't worry, as long as it's not dripping it's fine.

I don't even have such a good reason- mine is fine and poker straight and looks no different whether I let it dry naturally or blast dry it. I could wash it the night before but then it's greasy by lunchtime. I could use dry shampoo but I'm not sure why that's better than having damp hair at work for half an hour.
