Anyone able to help a skincare beginner?

Help for a beginner? I would be so grateful for some advice! I've had a look on the skin care threads but it's going over my head a bit

I'm really quite young but my skin doesn't seem it 😞 I suffered from acne as a teen and as an adult I have large pores and blemishes all over my skin. I still get spots but they don't particularly bother me, it's the overall appearance of my skin that is getting me down. Dull and uneven.

I do own some skin care products but they are mostly just Xmas/BD gifts and do not suit my skin. I have combination skin with an oily t zone, which has been getting worse and after digging through some of the threads on here I strongly suspect I have been over exfoliating (almost everyday) in an attempt to reduce it Blush so I'll stop!! I also use a simple moisturiser but that's it.

So it's pay day in 2 weeks and Im setting aside around £100 for some products to start with but I don't know where to start. I know I need a cleanser. Any recommendations for specific products/brands? What do I need to be doing? Help!

I started using the nip + fab range a few months ago and it has totally transformed my skin. I can't rave about it enough! Though my skin was acne proned and very dry, I'm sure they will have a range to suit your skin type. It's often on offer in Superdrug or boots too

I've got combination skin too and have got on well with La Roche Posay products. You can get them in Boots but I tend to buy from lookfantastic.com as they're cheaper there and p&p is free too.
Double cleansing at night has also been great for balancing up my skin - take off makeup using either an oil or micellar water swept over with a cotton pad, then put on a cream cleanser and remove with a hot flannel. I like nip+fab glycolic pads too and use one after cleansing every other day. Then serum and night cream.
Have a google of double cleansing to get some tips to suit your skin type.

Before baby I worked at Lush, and the products there cleared my skin right up! Even if you don't want to buy, it's worth going in, they'll give you a sit down consultation and samples if you ask.

Another fan of La Roche Posay. I like their Toleriane Dermo Cleanser and my DD liked the Sensitive Micellar Water. Gentle but effective, they do lovely moisturisers as well.

If your skin is looking dull, it may be dehydrated. You could look at Hyaluronic Acid (it's not an Acid it's a hydrator). The Ordinary do one, La Roche Posay has one called Hydraphase Serum and one that's always recommended is Hadalabo Gokujun premium hyaluronic solution 170ml. It's about £10 on Amazon and less than 1/2 the pride of the Ordinary one. It will hydrate and make your skin feel plumper and softer straight away.

Body Shop camomile Cleanser is often recommended as well.

Great suggestions thank you! What kind of moisturiser shoulder I be using? Serum? Night cream? I don't want anything too greasy

I would definitely stop exfoliating! Maybe try some of the suggestions here for cleansers/hydrating and see how your skin is after a few weeks. It may change (less oily) if you hydrate it more.

La Roche Posay, Avene and Mizon do good moisturisers. You can often get offers in Boots (UK) on the first two.

Also, have a look at The Ordinary Azelaic Acid for evening out texture, brightness etc. It seems to get mainly positive reviews but you need to use sunscreen the morning after use.

Okay so I couldn't wait until payday and I've ordered a bunch of stuff from super drug. Some stuff to double cleanse with, nip fab cleansing pads, hyaluronic acid, some new flannels, la Roche sunscreen and a moisturiser and a lipstick I like the look of the ordinary but Superdrug don't sell it and I didn't want to make a second order so that will wait until payday!

I just wrote a long message but my battery died and I lost it!!! Sad

I have oily skin as an adult. I use boots No7. Range for normal/oily skin. I buy the micellar cleansing water, night cream and day cream. I cleanse in morning and evening and apply moisturiser. I use the same range exfoliator maybe twice per week sometimes once.

I use bare minerals blemish remedy matifying primer and Matt foundation every day. These help prevent breakouts by fighting oil build up.

I use a charcoal face mask maybe once per week.

Thank you all!! I've picked up a few products now and obviously my skin looks no different (it's been 24 hours!!) But it does feel amazing!! So soft and smooth. Usually my oily spots are feeling super oily and shiny by 1pm but not today. I just feel so clean and fresh Grin
