Any Grey haired ladies who can advise on condition?

My hair is very grey naturally although dyed with a natural colour (no bleach) to add some colour so it looks mainly blond. When my hair was dark it was silky and smooth with no effort but now it's so grey it's coarse and wiry and frizzy. I see on here all the time, women who say their grey hair is softer and silkier since they stopped dying. Mine is the opposite, when I dyed it dark, the dye made it silky but now I only lightly dye it, it's coarse. I really think it's the amount of grey now that's the issue, not the dye as it's a "hair friendly"'dye, if there is such a thing.
How do o improve the condition and feel of it? I tried no silicones but it didn't do anything. I don't blow dry it but I do straighten a bit but I can't change that. Do I need some kind of mask or protein treatment?

Following. My hair is grey and fluffy. Cute on a kitten but shit for me.

Chasingsquirrels · 04/09/2017 17:40

Mine looks and feels a lot smoother since I've been using a Babyliss Big Hair on it.

Touch of Silver shampoo and conditioner - use it everyday and my -grey- platinum hair is very shiny. Would also recommend a styling product (can't remember what it is called but not same brand) which is a hair 'soufflé' for ease of styling (seems to provide some body).

I have tried other hair products and the fact is that ToS is available in all supermarkets, Wilko, Boots/Superdrug, often on offer and a fraction of the price.

Thanks. I have a babyliss big hair which works ok for when I want a straight bob but my style of choice is wavy (achieved with the straighteners) and this always just looks dry and coarse. I do use touch of silver sometimes but I read on here that it dries hair out so I don't use it often.

I have lots of bloody wiry grey and white hairs peppering my 31 year old head, so I'm watching this thread with interest.

The link below refers to nutrients/what to eat for healthy hair in general, but I don't know how useful it may be for grey or white hairs as they seem to act like alien life forms compared to other hair colours!

I know evening primrose capsules or rubbing the oil into your scalp is great to promote hair growth and strength, but I don't know about the overall condition or appearance. It may be worth our while to a Google it though.

Thanks argeles, I'll have a look at that. I feel like my hair and I are strangers after 40 years and I don't know what to do with it!

I have a chin length Bob which is 100% grey.
My dd recommended Tresemme heat defence spray which I use before blow drying plus I bought a decent hair dryer which has definitely helped with the frizz.
I have fine hair but alot of it and dry section by section like my hairdresser does.

I have naturally very dark hair but now (at aged 50) have a lot of wiry grey hairs in there.

For a while I was using Pantene Age Defy shampoo and conditioner which helped - I stumbled upon in the £shop but haven't seen it for ages so have run out.

I'm now using a drop of Moroccan Oil smoothed on my hair once I've washed, dried and straightened it.This seems to tame it for a day or two.

This is all interesting. I imagined everyone would recommend masks, sls free, "no poo", protein treatments, special shampoos, elasticiser, all sorts of oils, etc etc but no!

A couple of years back the percentage of white in my hair was increased enough to turn my silky hair into straw. If one fell out and was loose in my shirt it felt like a twig had got in there. I tried a lot of products but settled on kiehl's products for dry/damaged hair. I occasionally use some of OH's cheapo shampoo if there's a build up.

hazeyjane · 04/09/2017 20:26

I like daddy-o violet shampoo from Lush, then a bit of argan oil.

dudsville · 04/09/2017 20:27

Getdown, what a decent hair dryer? Although my hair is not straw it could be less fluffy so happy to sideline this thread a tiny bit to ask you for your hair dryer recommendations!

getdownshep · 04/09/2017 21:39

dudsville I was going to get a Parlux but I found this one in TK Maxx for £60.
As it's so powerful I can have it on a low heat so my hair doesn't frizz.
I also use a large barrel tangle teezer hairbrush as it doesn't cause static.

bonzo77 that made me laugh! Lush do a hair mask called "Fluff Ease", you can leave it on for 20 minutes and it's good, but if you're able to leave it on all night (I put one of those cheap shower caps you sometimes get in hotel rooms over it) then it's brilliant after washing and using a small amount of light conditioner in the morning (e.g. Lush American Dream). I use about a quarter of a tub at a time on my thick, shoulder length hair. It has a strong jasmine scent, which took me a while to get used to. I persevered because the product was so good.

dudsville · 04/09/2017 22:40

Thanks getdown, I may be going shopping for a new hair dryer.

MagdalenLaundry · 04/09/2017 22:47

My greys are like wire wool and like to bounce around on the top of my head
I let it dry naturally but wonder if a good hairdryer would help
I like it to dry curlyish so that doesn't help
A semi permanent colour does best but not fantastic
