Eliminating frizz

BlaWearie · 04/09/2017 15:47

Inspired by another thread recently....if I want to get rid of the frizz but not go for full curly-girl, do I need to eliminate SLS, or silicons, or both? Can anyone recommend products I can get from Tesco?
Any other suggestions (I've tried Elasticizer!)?

A very small amount of Lush's R&B hair moisturiser on dripping wet hair then wrap hair in a towel works for me. A small tub lasts me over a year.
Not Tesco sorry (though apparently their hair gel is CG friendly)

It depends on the level of frizz I guess. Personally, my hair gets wise to the tricks of product and I have to rotate. Morrocan oil worked a treat for a while, then stopped. Bumble and bumble products are quite good (but also stop working if I use too long). Last night I warmed up a chunk of coconut oil in my hands and smeared it on my head and my looks great now!

It'salard - I forgot about the R & B. It's fantastic too! Pongs a bit (much Lush stuff is overscented for my liking), but works great.

Sulphate free shampoo does make a difference, they have many brands now, in Tesco I usually buy Pure Rich by L'oreal, or ORS olive oil products. The one from the Body Shop is good as well but their conditioner is very tick.

I usually use a little bit of coconut oil that I massage in the hair before shampoo, but not every time. You can also use coconut oil after washing/conditioner but only a little.

To help the curls I use the pink curly cream from Boots. Very cheap and as good as many other expensive products.

BlaWearie · 04/09/2017 16:26

Sorry, I didn't explain very clearly!
My hair isn't curly, it's a bit wavy, but I have a sort of halo of shorter hairs that stick up on top and around my head.
I often use coconut oil on the ends to weight it down a bit. It's shoulder length but can go bushy at the bottom sometimes.
I'm hoping for sleek, with zero effort, if anyone has a spare miracle!

I've found Cantu products to be pretty good. Also a bit of leave in conditioner and Boots pink Curl Creme, put it in when wet. I've tried to leave it to dry naturally in the summer which helps, but in winter will blow dry using diffuser, but leave it a bit damp. A silk pillowcase may help too!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/09/2017 16:33

You need a serum.

I like Frizz Ease Secret Agent on wet hair before blow drying.

BlaWearie · 04/09/2017 16:54

I don't blow dry, too lazy Wink

Well, that was harder than I expected to find products. I've ordered Cantu shampoo & conditioner from Boots. Let's see if it can work miracles!

I have similar hair to you I think. After seeing a shocking frizz photo of me a couple of years ago, I did the following:

Initially got a Keratin Treatment which lasted about 6 months, but also (and mainly):
Stopped blow drying
stopped highlighting/colouring (despite going grey)
Only ever use SLS-free shampoo and conditioner.
Only wash my hair every other day, and occasionally just condition it.
Use a tiny amount of Moroccanoil on it every morning (wet or dry)
Improved my diet and iron levels.

Honestly, people keep asking me what I use as its so shiny and sleek! The horrible frizz has gone and been replaced with silky waves. I also used to get a terribly itchy scalp and spots on my neck. These have also disappeared.

OGX is great they are SLS and Silicone free, I use the Kukui oil shampoo, conditioner and hair oil, It smells amazing and does a good job Smile

BlaWearie · 08/09/2017 18:04

Interesting Pascall.

I'm too lazy to blow dry, I straighten it about twice a year (or every time I have a night out, which is the same thing - I'm so rock n roll!) I wash every 2 or 3 days and usually use some coconut oil on the ends.

So apart from the SLS-free shampoo & conditioner, that's not too dissimilar to your routine. I still have a halo of frizz if the atmosphere is damp and I look as if I have loads of heat damage at the back though - it's a bit candy-flossy .
I'm going to the hairdresser next week, so I can ask about the keratin treatment.

I don't really understand the chemicals listed as ingredients of shampoo. It's worrying, the amount of 'stuff' in shampoo! Music, the OGX shampoos seem to have sodium sulfate listed - is that a baddie or okay?

OP, My hair is exactly like yours, I've used OGX on and off for ages and my hair always looks much better when I use the range.
I think it's mainly the SLS that damages, it is a foaming agent that can dry out your scalp and hair, I've not had any problems with OGX.

BlaWearie · 08/09/2017 19:15

Thanks Music. At least you can buy OGX easily! Is the whole range SLS-free?

I think so, I've used lots of them, the Keratin one is really good, Also if you haven't tried it the Loreal extraordinary oil is really nice, and makes my hair so smooth and shiny, And it's reasonably priced and lasts ages Smile

Stellato · 08/09/2017 19:51

I tried curly girl but it just made my hair really greasy.

I've gone in the opposite direction now - I use a clarifying shampoo (currently redken) every second wash and a really moisturising conditioner (currently aveda be curly), then a little bit of leave in conditioner / serum type stuff (currently original sprout curl calmer).

No frizz!

BlaWearie · 25/09/2017 10:58

Well, I've used Cantu Shampoo & conditioner for a couple of weeks now and it's not working miracles. My scalp is nice and clear, which is good, but it hasn't made any noticeable difference to my frizz.

Oh well. Sad

For me it's using enough product so when it dries completely it's a solid crunchy cast then scrunching the crunch out to leave curls without frizz
