Hello

So I had train tracks when I was a teen but over the yrs my front teeth have started to overlap again.
I'm looking into adult braces but am confused by all the options e.g 6 month smile, Invisalign, orthodontist or cosmetic etc.
I just want the best option rather than the quickest.

As anyone got any recommendations? Also if anyone had used someone in London they liked that would be great too.

Hi, I am currently having Invisalign treatment, it is going really well. Happy to answer any questions, I am based in Hampshire though so can't recommend locally to you.

Headinthedrawer · 03/09/2017 21:44

I'm having 6 month smile as I only needed my front teeth fixed and it was 1/2 the price of invisalign. If I had the money I would probably have chosen invisalign. However 6 month smile...my teeth look amazing so far (4 months in).I have to go to the dentist every 2 weeks for treatment which is usually around 2 hours. It's uncomfortable...filing between my teeth, lots of pulling etc.I have them completely numbed with local anesthetic now though and it's fine.No problem with the braces between appointments though and my front teeth really are straight!Only for you if it's the front teeth and cosmetic though.

Posie how long are you into the treatment & have you done it through a cosmetic dentist or orthodontist?

Head can I ask why you would of chosen Invisalign if it was cheaper. Your treatment sounds like it's going well though.

Thanks ladies!

I am on set 12 out of an initial 14, each set is worn for 2 weeks. I am having Invisalign Lite and can have more sets when I reach the end if required, called 'refinements' although I am hoping I will be happy with the results when I reach set 14. I have gone with a dentist as she was £2000 cheaper than the orthodontist quote! I asked her loads of questions and she was very knowledgeable, and so far have been pleased with my treatment.
I will post some pics so you can see the progress. The first two are my awful crooked teeth back in April, with and without the braces. The last one is where I am now. I have attachments on several teeth and have had some teeth filed a bit to make space for them to move. I have to take them out whenever I eat and drink and brush and floss afterwards which does get a bit irritating, but I keep telling myself its not forever. I only drink water when they're in, I miss my cups of tea!

Ooh Posie they look amazing! Can I ask what you have paid?

OP posts:
PosiePootlePerkins · 03/09/2017 22:14

Thank you! £2,500. Was quoted £4,700 by orthodontist. My dentist is very flexible about payments, I just pay what I can when I am able.

Getout21 · 03/09/2017 22:16

That sounds reasonable. I was thinking around 3k but have plucked this finger out of the air!

Figure!!

Also, none of it has been particularly painful, just some discomfort with the filing, and when a new set of braces goes on there is some pressure and discomfort which only lasts a day or so. The braces themselves make my mouth feel dry so I drink a lot of water, and bizarrely makes my lips dry too so I get through a lot of lip balm! The inside of my mouth was sore initially but bonjella helped with that. Also, very annoyingly, the edges of the braces can be sharp so it is recommended that you file the edges gently with a nail file - very annoying given how much you pay for them! (Rant over!)

PosiePootlePerkins · 03/09/2017 22:20

I found it definitely pays to ring round and get different quotes and ask lots of questions.

viques · 03/09/2017 22:24

Poise, they look a,axing. Will you have to wear any retainers after the initial treatment is done? and could you explain about the filing , what happens?

Getout21 · 03/09/2017 22:24

Any particular questions I should ask?

OP posts:
viques · 03/09/2017 22:25

Sorry, fat fingers! I meant to say Posie, they look amazing.

PosiePootlePerkins · 03/09/2017 22:34

Yes I will have to wear nighttime retainers, every night to start with and then every other night. Probably forever as they will just shift back. The filing is OK, they just get a thin piece of metal and rub it against the edge of your teeth. Fitting the attachments is uncomfortable, a bit of pressure and you have to wear a special set of braces during the process. Once you've had the moulds taken they get sent off and Invisalign send back a computer image of the whole process showing your teeth at each stage. They also send the dentist a programme of when and where to do the filing, so although the dentist needs to use their judgement somewhat, they are also guided by Invisalign.
Questions...mine were all regarding the treatment really as I knew very little about it. I think it is important to have a good relationship with the dentist and feel relaxed with them.

PosiePootlePerkins · 03/09/2017 22:36

Also be aware that you are supposed to wear them for 22 hrs a day, which doesn't leave long for meals!

Puppymouse · 03/09/2017 22:38

Invasalign here. Best thing ever. I still wear my last retainer (remade out of harder more durable material) every other night a few years on. I liked that it wasn't visible being an adult in a professional work environment.

I had ABB (alignment bleach bonding) with an inman aligner rather than invisalign

Worked in 4 months. Amazing results.

Not sure if suitable for everyone, but I was thrilled with mine

PosiePootlePerkins · 03/09/2017 22:42

Good luck OP! It takes time and commitment but will be worth it!

Puppymouse · 03/09/2017 22:44

Agree - be prepared to commit to wearing the retainers and also looking after your teeth good oral hygiene etc. So worth it. I have felt much more confident since having it done.

bananafish81 · 03/09/2017 22:44

I wore the inman on my lower teeth only, the results were in just under 4 months

Once the teeth were straight I had the teeth bleached and the chips were built up using composite bonding

I have a small wire glued to the back of my teeth to keep them from moving, but no retainers needed

(although I do wear a bite guard at night to protect my teeth from the grinding that caused me to wear down my teeth in the first place!)

I'm having Invisalign top and bottom. Weekly wear is now an option although I think I am one of very few doing that. Basically you need to be very compliant to change weekly rather than fortnightly. There are a fair number of dentist visits so go somewhere near to you. I've had very little filing so visits are quick. She just likes to check how it's going every now and then. Be prepared for extra hygienist appointments during treatment. I need 40 aligners so weekly wear has really helped to speed this up.

Getout21 · 04/09/2017 09:18
