Are stylish cardigans possible?

Even the word 'cardi' does not suggest style does it?!

Is there such a thing?! I like the idea of still being able to wear some of my favourite t-shirts or short sleeve tops in colder weather but will need something over the top? Any ideas?

I've never seen a stylish looking one. They're something I used to wear a lot, and I probably own 5 or 6 but don't really reach for them now.

They feel a bit dated or over-done for me now, although I wouldn't think that if I saw a friend/ woman in the street wearing one. In fact, twice in recent weeks I've seen someone wearing one and thought 'I must wear my cardi's more often'!

Only if they are oversize and slouchy. In autumn / winter I have a couple of Topshop and Warehouse camel-coloured ones made of nice material that I wear with black skinnies.

Any kind of buttoned, fitted, cropped or...GOD FORBID...waterfall style cardi is a no in my book.

What about the biker style ones?

The fifties style ones are stylish. Great with dresses or jeans.

SDaddy007 · 03/09/2017 18:30

No.

Ive got some long, quite thin knit from All Saints and Gap that look OK over vests and linen t-shirts.

bbpp · 03/09/2017 18:39

Yes. Never quite understand the cardigan hate - the only ones which look shite are the really thin, almost see through ones.

I love chunky oversized cardigans in autumn and winter with skinny jeans and biker boots. The ultimate slouchy chunky knit cardigan is something I am always looking for.

Ellapaella · 03/09/2017 18:42

Love those ones bbpp

How do you keep warm in a dress in a cold air conditioned office then?

EarlessToothlessVagabond · 03/09/2017 19:18

I do struggle with anything chunky on my top half as I'm inverted triangle shape and top heavy. I do like the idea of chunky knit though.

I'm the same with chunky knit. It really bulks me out. I have a cardi I got from River Island years ago which is good thick wool and slouchy, but smooth knit. It's the holy grail of cardigans.

Pistachiois50pmore · 03/09/2017 20:40

I think maybe not. I keep thinking I'll find an exception. Bought a big fisherman style knit one which I thought was cool and grungy, and a neat longline Whistles boiled wool one which I layered over a chiffon button-up...both make me look like a harassed mum who hasn't made an effort. They're handy for round the house but I've relegated them to Sunday gear.

bitemytoenails · 03/09/2017 20:42

of course they can be stylist. like jackets there are hundreds of designs and styles, just have to find what you like/what suits.

Chunky ones look cool (I had the most fabulos maternity one that I lived in during pregnancies instead of a coat) but I like my cropped cashmere ones as well. Lovely over a dress for work.
