Has anyone cleaned their silver Tiffany jewellery? How do you do it, what do you use?

I throw mine in my sonic cleaner. Prior to that, I used to use a cleaning cloth - I think it was from Swarovski.

Cleaning cloth bought in Morrisons last week

I got a cleaning cloth from tiffanys and they showed me how to clean it properly

Hi I'm a jeweller - you should give it a gentle brush with fairy liquid solution and a soft toothbrush, then dry and a good strong buff with a silver cloth. Any dulling will just be natural oxidation and come off with a brush and a buff.

If you don't have a silver cloth, (different to a gold cleaning cloth - it has some chemicals infused that are too harsh for gold) then just use something like a glasses cleaning cloth.

Ooh thank you, I am struggling to clean the corners of my infinity necklace. Will try with toothbrush and fairy now

DandelionAndBedrock · 01/09/2017 16:00

Walkan, can I ask - I sometimes use the foil/bicarb/water technique on a keyring.

Is that a bad idea for jewellery? I worry that it is too harsh.

PinkHeart5911 · 01/09/2017 16:02

I use a Goddards silver cleaning cloth I got in the supermarket, it works a treat.

I couldn't believe how black the cloth went first time I cleaned it

travailtotravel · 01/09/2017 16:31

I used good old fashioned Silvo but it was a right mess - I recommend the cloth. I only have the silvo for one item of silver we have on display and am going to give up on it in favour of fairy now!!

Jellybean - you're welcome, hope it does the trick.
Dandelion - I've never heard of this technique, is it when you encourage the oxidation off with heat? To be honest, not having used it would suggest it's too harsh.
If you have a load that needs cleaning, most jewellers will do a lovely job for about £10 for it all, on site.
But otherwise, all silver really needs is a good strong rub.

DandelionAndBedrock · 02/09/2017 11:25

Yes, you line a dish with foil, sprinkle in bicarb, put the silver in and then pour on hot water. The bicarb fizzles and it smells like jewellery dip and then the silver is all sparkly. I do get stuff cleaned, it was more for if I am going out and want something to sparkle fairly last minute. Thanks though.

PanicHitsEarlyForMe · 02/09/2017 14:40

The hot water, foil and bicarb method is great because it doesn't remove any of the silver atoms, it simply removes the oxidised layer via electrolytic action.
The chemical cleaners that you use to run the metal will remove layers of the silver atoms, less great for your jewellery.
Worth noting that the hot water, foil and bicarb method should be avoided for pieces with set stones.

Thanks everyone
