Acne products?

The title explains it all. As a teen I had perfect skin but now, in my mid 20s, I have horrible acne mostly along my jaw line, chin and neck area.

Rarely do the spots come to the surface but they are there and the area is red and inflammed a lot of the time.

I have tried masks, zineyrt (spelling?), lotions, cleansers, spin brushes and now I'm using a very gentle and natural witch hazel and tea tree gel.
I've moved to mineral foundation and use a microfiber cloth to remove makeup at the end of the day.

Nothing is working, can anyone recommend anything? It is seriously affecting my confidence :(

Have you tried the La Roche Posay Effaclar range? That might be worth a go if you haven't used it before. They do a pretty reasonably priced starter 3 piece kit- is on offer in boots at the moment (25% off)

Same issue, want to try The Ordinary because of the fab reviews on MN but I find it so confusing.

I've had mild to moderate acne since my teens (now 30s)- I've used every product under the sun and nothing worked. The only thing ever to be effective for me was sitting out in the sun (fairly effective but as I got older I worried about ageing/cancer risk) and topical antibiotic cream on prescription from GP. I now feel like a right plank for ever having spent my hard earned cash on all those products that didn't work and suffering/covering over something that was easily treatable.

Visit the GP.

There are a number of treatments which may help you.

I found that all the skincare in the world didn't work in my teen then adult acne. The combined pill did, now on Spironolactone which is great.

Read up on the options just in case your GP isn't up to date on adult acne. If no joy then request a referral to a Consultant Dermatologist.

Good luck

I agree, visit the GP.

Also, you could give Hibiscrub a try. You can buy it in Boots for about a fiver. Mix it half n half with water in an empty dispenser bottle. I use it in the morning and after removing my make up and it's made a huge difference to my hormonal and cystic acne.

Have you tried banana peel?

The only thing that worked for me was Acnecide gel which you can buy OTC. It has benzyl peroxide in it and prevents rather than gets rid of.

I wash my face with an antibacterial soap, then use Johnson & Johnson toner, Acnecide then a gentle, light baby moisturiser.

Every other day I use Nip Fab glycolic pad things or their glycolic mask when I remember.

I think jaw line spots are a hormonal thing though so would be a good idea to visit GP.

Please go and see a dermatologist - much better than spending years and money on products that don't solve it!

Thank you everyone. I did get zineyrt from the gp and it worked for about 10 weeks but everything is back with a vengeance. I had 3 huge spots on my upper back/neck area this morning when I woke, despite having none last night :(

I occasionally get a spot and the only thing that clears it up is benzoyl peroxide, which you can get over the counter at Boots. Not sure I'd use it all over my face though, as it tends to have a drying/peeling effect.

Margomyhero · 01/09/2017 08:32

back to the GP then OP.

The next thing they may offer is antibiotics. I think the GP has to suggest these options prior to giving you a referral to a Dermatologist.

For me the antibiotics worked to an extent - but not as well as hormonal drugs - i.e. Dianette, currently Spironolactone. Both of those act on the actions of androgen on the skin - suppressing oil. Works for me - but everyone is different.

Make an appointment today.
