Too tall for heels?

milleniumhandandprawn · 30/08/2017 15:36

So I'm a whisker under 6ft tall in my socks. Generally I'm fairly in proportion and have good posture, but people often get a shock when I stand up next to them.
This doesn't generally bother me at all and I'm usually not self conscious (achieved over years!)
However next week I have an interview that I really really want to get the job for.
I work in the city so need to be suited, and I have two options shoes wise.
1 are about 3 inch heels, make my legs look good and wouldn't stand out at all if I was 5,6 (but I'm not).
2 are "sensible" heels of about an inch but at least I won't be towering even more over whoever the interviewer is...

I'm looking for some realistic advice, I know all of the stuff my mum would say - flaunt what you've got, you're so lucky to be tall etc etc, however i need so real world actual facts rather than seeing through rose tinted glasses!
(I did receive some comments once about looking like a drag queen when wearing average heels so I may have scewed perspective!)

I'm not sure I'd worry too much. I'm 5'10" and never wear heels, but that's just because they are uncomfortable. My taller dd loves to add a few extra inches, but then she quite enjoys intimidating her classmates :)

To me 3inch heels aren't very appropriate for an interview, I know some people wear high heels at work, but I think of them as evening wear really. Interview wear should I think be smart but unexceptional, you want them to remember what you say, not what you looked like.

I'd not worry too much on the height though, as unless your interview involves a tour you will most likely be sitting down for almost all of it.

Llamacorn · 30/08/2017 16:43

Wear the higher ones! You will have a lot more confidence knowing your legs look great, I always admire a tall woman wearing heels too Smile
I'm 5'8 so not particularly tall, but in my younger days I regularly wore very high heels so was definitely over 6' on many occasions.
Good luck with your interview.

HairNinja · 30/08/2017 16:49

I'm fairly tall (5'10") and don't wear heels so I'd say go for flat shoes! Not because I don't want to tower over people but just because they damage your feet, knees, back etc.

Failing that, wear whatever's most comfortable so that you can concentrate on the interview and not painful feet.

BumbleNova · 30/08/2017 16:49

Hand on heart, which will make you feel most at ease? If you are confident in the heels, wear them.

SPARKS17 · 30/08/2017 17:00

I used to work in the city and at 5ft10 always wore 3 inch plus high heels. Incidentally I always got the job!!

Maybe its just me but felt that people are taller in the city, I never felt massively tall just on a par with most men. Go with what feels more comfortable but I always thought heels made my legs look better and made me feel more confident.

Good luck!

Pick whatever you feel most confident wearing. I'm between 5'10'' and 5'11'' and as sparks I never feel massively tall, but generally prefer flat shoes. A (female) colleague is equally tall and wears high heels as you describe.

Nuttynoo · 30/08/2017 17:15

Pick the heel. Attitudes towards female height has changed in prestigious companies - it's now considered positive, and elegant, especially if you're also young and attractive.

Ttbb · 30/08/2017 17:20

It's not unusually to see tall women in the city. Wear what you like. I doubt they will be put out because you look like a model.

specialsubject · 30/08/2017 17:20

At your height you presumably have large feet, so the 3inch heel won't distort them as badly as with smaller feet. The twisted tiptoe look isn't pretty.

If you can walk without waddling in them then fine. Your height isn't relevant . but the bum out clumping stagger that high heels can produce will get you noticed for the wrong reasons.

gegs73 · 30/08/2017 17:36

I'm 5 foot 10 so not quite as tall as you. For an interview I would go for the 1 inch flatter shoes. I love being tall and happily go high, however if you are walking along anywhere with the interviewer you might be bent in half trying to hear them!

rhodanunn · 30/08/2017 17:38

Ignore the based in misogynistic trope claptrap about looking like a drag queen or being too tall to wear them. Equally ignore anything about having to wear heels in order to look professional and elegant...

Potential bone health issues aside, wearing heels are more than just increasing your height and a lot more to do with fashion. A 3 inch heel would not be out of place whatsoever at any of the interviews I've ever attended.

Hope you get the position!

Bluntness100 · 30/08/2017 17:44

I think I'd go lower. I am about five eight or so and often wear four inch heels and it's fine, but I work with a woman who is over six foot and I think if she wore three inch heels it may be a bit distracting. You want the interview to be about you, not your height. However over riding that, is what you feel most comfy in.

milleniumhandandprawn · 30/08/2017 17:44

Thanks so much for all of the replies :)

Usually I wouldn't bat an eyelid about being tall and people can like it or lump it - their problem not mine etcetc

However given that I'm literally going to be being judged I really want to be as non-provocative/confrontational as possible. I might save the big heels for once I've got the job :)

Also very good points made by some... my standard footwear is flats at work/flip flops/converse or no shoes whenever possible outside of work so I probably need some practice in the higher ones!

I do have enormous feet so was quite excited to find 2 pairs that actually fit!

I'm 5'10'' and regularly wear stilettos when I go out. Having size 9 feet means they make the heel bigger for some crazy reason!

But if you carry it with confidence you'll look great. My husband is over 6 feet and loves it when I wear heels. Do it!

Laiste · 30/08/2017 17:50

I see you've made your mind up OP, so that's good.

I was going to say bare in mind there may be stairs to manage. If you're with someone who skips up or down them while chatting you might find yourself wishing you'd worn the low ones :)

Orangebird69 · 30/08/2017 18:00

I'm 6'2 and often wore 3 inch heels to work. If you're anywhere near 6ft as a women, flats or not, you're going to get noticed. It's fucking depression that a tall woman in heels could be seen as 'distracting' or that you could 'stand out for the wrong reasons' (wtaf). Good luck with the interview.

Orangebird69 · 30/08/2017 18:01

depressing, not depression.

Landy10 · 30/08/2017 18:08

1 inch
I'm 6ft, maybe get away without a tall comment with a 1inch heel. 3 inch that'll be the first thing they say to you when you meet. How boring but it always happens upon meeting a new regular sized person Grin

milleniumhandandprawn · 30/08/2017 19:04

Urgh landy and oranage we should start a club 😁
It's about the only physical attribute I can think of that it's still ok to comment on.

Thanks for all of the best wishes! Have got a week to concentrate on non-footwear-related issues now!
