Body Length Type, Height and Navel Position

I often have an issue with belted coats (fixed belts or fixed loop positions) The belt sits too high above my 'natural waist' which I define as being the slimmest part of my torso. This is also where my navel is. I am 5'7.

Is this because I'm too tall for the coat or is it because my waist is, what, too high or too low? Is it because of where my navel sits? I recently watched a weight loss video where the woman's navel was below her 'natural waist' (I have seen a thread on here before about this) and so this got me thinking about the coat issue.

Why does this happen? It makes my brain hurt Confused

My navel seems to be below my waist.

I have a ridiculously short torso though (my waist is just below my boobs)

BlairWaldorfLovesShopping · 30/08/2017 10:06

It's because your waist is low. You're right, the natural waist is the slimmest part of the torso - nothing to do with the navel. I suppose the solution is to not buy coats with belt loops, but rather belts that you can move down. Do you have the same problem with dresses? That's harder to solve...

Personally I have a long torso and a high waist, which luckily means I can make my short legs look longer by always accentuating my waist.

Strummerville · 30/08/2017 10:08

Just had to get up and have a look in the mirror! My slimmest part is above my navel. It goes ribcage, slim part (natural waist), navel (body widening towards hips at this point).

Piratesandpants · 30/08/2017 11:14

I have the same problem - I look hilarious in dresses with a waist. It's because I have a very long body.

MaisieDotes · 30/08/2017 11:18

I have this, a low waist and long body.

I have a Hobbs coat that I rarely wear as the belt is just a tiny bit too high. Only about a cm but just enough to be annoying!

High waisted jeans are often more like mid-rise on me. I'm 5'7" too.

FagAshMIL · 30/08/2017 11:47

Right, so I am long bodied with a low waist? Yes, same with dresses though often don't buy as look like a sack of shit tied in the middle Grin

Is this why skirts and tucked in blouses look wrong on me? I have big boobs which doesn't help. I did think it was a weight issue but even when I've been a small 12 it didn't work for me.

I'm also long-bodied. I can never find swimming costumes that fit and playsuits/jumpsuits give me camel toe! The struggle is real. Sad

Peachypeaches · 01/09/2017 03:55

I have the same issue, dressing gowns and belted dresses look ridiculous on me. I was given a onesie at Christmas and my body was far too long for it. One tip for swimwear is to buy from the tall range if you can find one (I'm 5ft6 so wouldn't usually need tall), they have a longer body so no camel toe!

BikeRunSki · 01/09/2017 04:03

Me too. 5'8". Long body, waistlines always sit too high on me. I think of myself as a tall person with short legs when I buy clothes. J often buy a "tall" dress and take it up.

Logans · 01/09/2017 04:32

I always find clothes are made for people with short backs. Or possibly average backs which are shorter than yours and mine.

CountFosco · 01/09/2017 06:36

It's just that you are taller than average. I've got the opposite problem at 5'2" and fitted dresses always have a waist that is too low and so I get unflattering folding of the material at the back. I'm fine in petite dresses.

I'm surprised more shops don't do a tall and petite range actually. I can go a size up or down pretty easily depending on the fit but the length makes a massive difference to how frumpy an item of clothing looks.

EdinaMonsoon · 01/09/2017 09:03

Definitely try the "tall" ranges. I'm only 5'6 but have a long body & find a better fit with these.

My natural waist is low & so too was my navel. Then I had a tummy tuck & the surgeon repositioned my navel to where he thought it should be 🙄😆. He did a fantastic job otherwise but I've never quite got used to it.

bunnybleu · 01/09/2017 10:43

Snap. I'm 5'6.5 and long in the body, so swimsuits are a nightmare to find and most belted items don't feel right.

CremeDeSudo · 01/09/2017 11:29

Tall swimsuits are so ugly though Sad

stringbean · 01/09/2017 14:15

Yup, I have this same problem too. I'm 5'8, have long body and legs look slightly too short in proportion to the rest of me. Someone mentioned Hobbs, and I've found this - I have a coat from there with a belt and find it slightly too high. Other shops I find that t-shirts and tops are just too short. You're not alone!

Doobigetta · 01/09/2017 16:57

I'm only 5'5", and I have this problem. My navel is a tiny bit below my natural waist.
I can't work out which bit of me is short, though. I don't think my legs are particularly- I buy 31" jeans- but something must be, given that I'm not a tall person.

poppym12 · 01/09/2017 17:29

I have this kind of problem. The waistline of dresses always sits too high, tops are too short in the body and i need to buy tall in a lot of things even though I'm only 5'8 (jumpsuits are out as i can either trip over the legs of tall ones or sport a very fetching camel toe in a regular fit. I do neither). I thought my waist looked high. it looks as though my body is long but my hip bones are high. No wonder I always feel like a bag of shite tied up no matter what I wear. In bikinis I look weird as there's a big dip where my hip meets my leg which has always made me look like I'm wearing clothes that are too tight for me so cut in (even when I was young and slim I felt huge because of it).

BikeRunSki · 02/09/2017 09:08

Speedo are good for long swimsuits. They are not marketed as such, but the costumes in their "Endurance" fabric is robust, yet 4-way stretchy. Many Land's End swimsuits come in long versions. Again, not particularly marketed as such, but it's a size option on many costumes in most sizes (maybe even all sizes).
