Hair products for fine hair

I was wondering if someone could recommend some products to use for my hair.

It's fine, has greasy roots really quickly, breaks easily and I seem to have a lot of shedding since having my youngest daughter 2 years ago, I know it's quite normal after birth but didn't think would still be bad after 3 years!

I find conditioner quite heavy for my hair and often makes it greasy but I definitely need some kind of defanging product. I hardly ever use styling or heat products so hair tends to dry naturally most of the time unless I'm in a rush or am styling it for going out.

I use a tangle teaser.

Just after a product to use as a conditioner really either during showering or after. I've used Aussie miracle sprays before which I do like but they are just not cutting it right now since having my daughter I think I need something better but not too heavy or it weighs my hair down and makes it oily.

Any suggestions?

First of all I would address the shedding. Get the GP to do a thyroid profile and also test for zinc and iron plus iron transferrin which shows if you are storing enough iron. Also ferritin levels. These will give an indication of why you are still losing hair. You have to start from the inside. Only use conditioner on the ends not the roots as that will make it greasy. As your hair sounds a little fragile at the moment you could try Batiste Dry Stylling XXL powder you use it on dry hair and it adds volume and knocks out oil and grease and it's not expensive.

I have stopped using normal conditioner on my fine hair altogether and it is much better for it. I use the Schwarzkopf Gliss Liquid Silk spray on conditioner after towel drying and before brushing.
The shampoo that made a huge difference to my greasy roots is Kerastase cristalliste, its quite expensive but definitely worth it. I only had to wash my hair every other day after starting to use this and after two bottles I went back to using a purple shampoo (for my blonde hair) and the greasiness hasn't returned.

I agree with the PP though to see a doctor about the shedding. That seems a long time to still be losing hair.

Thanks guys I shall definitely look at that shampoo at the weekend!

Welshcake I use the liquid silk shampoo. I've also got the conditioner but find it doesn't really do much! Will look for the spray instead! I also use purple shampoo for my blonde hair but have been alternating with the silk one.

I do bleach my hair but wouldn't of thought that would cause th shedding. It never did before anyway. I think th tests would be clear as I had some tests done earlier this year relating to stomach issues I have been having but they were all clear included in thos tests was anaemia and thyroid. Agree tho I probably should see a dr about that issue. I was hoping it was just because of poor conditioned hair x

I might get a shock reaction here as Kerastase products are popular but when a collegue of mine was losing her hair she was advised by a dermatologist that specialised in hair loss that many shampoos including Kerastase are highly perfumed and include parabens. If your hair is under stress it is best to avoid. Nizoral 2% is used to help with the shedding and you can get in on prescription. Give it a month and see the difference. x

AuntyElle · 30/08/2017 12:59

OP, you really do need to ask your GP for the result of your ferritin test. They will usually only flag it up if it is under 15 (if then). But there is research to show that ferritin needs to be over 50 to halt hair loss and over 70 for regrowth to occur.
If it is low and you can't tolerate with the ferrous sulphate the NHS prescribe, you can buy your own iron fumerate or bisglycinate which is easier on your digestive system! Take with vitamin C to help absorption.

Trinny woodall did a live holiday haul thing in Boots recently and she was raving about the L'Oreal thickening shampoo and conditioner (I think it's part of the elvive range, but it says it's a thickening product on it). Supposedly works better the longer you use it too.

I don't have particularly fine hair but I really rate Bumble and Bumble thickening hairspray for extra oomph.

ImGoingForATwix · 30/08/2017 13:05

Double checked, it's called L'Oréal fibrology.

ShmooBooMoo · 30/08/2017 13:49

This is dear but is the best I've found:
www.lookfantastic.com/shu-uemura-art-of-hair-muroto-volume-shampoo-300ml/10557366.html

I put a tiny bit of this through the ends while still damp too:
www.naturisimo.com/products.cfm?id=5461

You can buy a sample from ^ too I think for 50p.

ShmooBooMoo · 30/08/2017 13:50

I don't trust endorsements on TV shows tbh - they are all sponsored!

Nottsangel2015 · 30/08/2017 18:52

Thank you everyone for taking the time to answer I shall definitely be trying some of the products mentioned here and I will definitely be visiting the dr re the shedding.

I'll check back and let you know how I get on x

Look forward to hearing how you get on.

I have found the L'Oréal clay shampoo quite good. Also swell shampoo and conditioner might be worth a try. You can get a sample pack on amazon for not too much (although it is expensive). I have actually had quite good success with the kids' detangler spray. The L'Oréal pear one. I was using it on holiday and actually it did the job quite nicely (don't love the smell)

The Percy & ? (Wood, maybe?) 'no oil' oil is also excellent as an alternative to conditioner. I had a sample bottle that would have lasted forever of DS2 hadn't unscrewed it and poured it all over the sofa 😡

CoolCarrie · 30/08/2017 22:03

Percy and Reed is the No Oil Oil is good for fine hair but don't us too much of it, and avoid the roots, med lengths and ends only.

TheHoundsofLove · 31/08/2017 09:48

I've got similar hair and it has been much better since I started using a silicone free conditioner - it is much better conditioned and definitely gets much less greasy (I can go 3-4 days between washes now, whereas, before, it looked awful if I didn't wash it every day). I really like the Tresemme Botanique range.

Nottsangel2015 · 01/09/2017 07:55

Freebutton the joys of children eh!!! I have tried my daughter my detangling spray it is a shwarzkoff one it's pink and smells of sweets Hmm

I shall check out this Percy reed no oil stuff but I have the fear of anything that is oil based in my hair, I don't even use serums as they just turn my hair to grease instantly.

Houndoflove I shall check out some silicone free products never heard of that's tresseme range before. What other brands do silicone free?

Thanks guy. I'm going shopping this weekend and I've just been paid so going to splurge on a few things x
