Do you think a pixie cut is ageing?

Summer15coming · 29/08/2017 13:59

I've booked a hair appointment for next week, and am thinking about going for a dramatic change. At the moment my hair (straight and dark brunette) is just past my shoulders. It is also in bad condition due to multiple colourings to hide the greys.

I've had short hair in the past and loved it. I'm very tempted to go for a pixie cut now partly to get rid of the out of condition hair, but also because I fancy a change. My worries are a) that I won't suit it now that I'm 45 and b) that it will age me. As background, I'm frequently told that I look much younger than 45, and don't want that to change once I've gone for the chop! I've included a picture so that you can tell me if you don't think I'd suit it. For what it's worth, I do have a long neck (hidden by my clothes in the pic) and I'm slim. I don't know if those factors are important or not for a short cut!

Just had a Google of pixie bobs. Once I'd got past the pages of cats (!) , I found some lovely styles. I like Katie Holmes' too. Aarrgghh - the decisions!

My appointment is next Tuesday. If I'm brave enough I'll post a pic!

I'm the same age and look pretty similar to you. Anything like a pixie is very aging on me but I have had Katie Holmes cut and it was lovely.

EveningShadows · 29/08/2017 23:27

I think longer hair is far more ageing! A lovely styled shorter hair style can take years off - not necessarily a pixie but something shorter.

I see so many women with just "long hair" and no style - does nothing for them.

hamsterloverlover · 29/08/2017 23:28

nooo keep it long

nickyschof · 30/08/2017 08:37

There's an app, imaginatively called "hairstyles", where you can try different styles on a photo of yourself. There's a pixie cut on there to try.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 31/08/2017 23:24

Ah yes. Forgot about the cats.

MissBeehiving · 01/09/2017 06:31

I'm 46 and have a long blonde pixie cut. I love it - it's fresh and frames my face so much better than the long hair that I had. When I had it done last year I had loads of positive comments. I think a pixie would look great on you - I'd keep a bit of length at the front - you can always go shorter!

Pleasedontsaythis · 01/09/2017 06:44

OP, I wouldn't go too short to start with. I am growing out a pixie at the moment and it's at the Katie Holmes stage (first pic that one pp posted). It looks quite nice actually and I'm thinking of leaving it at that length.

A short stacked bob will look super on you.

Pleasedontsaythis · 01/09/2017 06:46

Something like this maybe?

Do you think a pixie cut is ageing?
CountFosco · 01/09/2017 06:47

I'm a year older than you and went from a bob to a pixie earlier this year. When my hair dresser finished he said 'OMG you look 12'. Obviously that was a slight exaggeration but I think some of us suit long hair and some suit short hair and for me removing the weight of my heavy bob lifted my face.

Facially you look youthful and feminine so I don't think it would be aging on you at all and frankly if your hairdresser is any good they'll give you a flattering cut.

lolalotta · 01/09/2017 06:51

Following! Do post the pic!!!

herecomesthsun · 01/09/2017 07:42

Emma Willis - another brunette in early 40s - I think looks better with short hair and I do think you could carry it off.

I also think you look really good in the picture with your hair as it is Smile

barnacharmer · 01/09/2017 07:49

I have a pixie and it makes me look younger. New people I met since having it done thought I was 10 years younger than I am (34). I even got asked for ID when buying cigarettes

NobodyKnowsMeAtAll · 01/09/2017 08:23

I think you would look fabulous with a pixie - or a short Katie Holmes bob. And do you know what - if you do not like it you can always....wait for it grow it again.

Go for it. I did it a few years back to help transition from dyeing to grey (loving it btw). What I would recommend is as well as taking in pictures of pixies you like, also take in pictures of pixies you really hate iyswim. So if, for example, you have ones with pouffy crowns, or side-burny bits or really short fringes - have some pictures of that to show the hairdresser. This was you can say - Love these. Hate these. And the hairdresser will know what to avoid.

Please post an after pic.

Oblomov17 · 01/09/2017 08:25

Yes pixie done badly is too harsh and unflattering.

Don't go too short. Or not all over. Different lengths maybe.

I think you are very pretty and the Katie Holmes pictures would be fab. But don't go much shorter.

MrsBartlettforthewin · 01/09/2017 11:10

Had mine pixied in January from just below my shoulders and I love it. I mainly faux hawk it and get told how much it suites me all the time. It's slightly out grown at the moment but still looks good. I think you'd really suit it. Plus if you don't like it hair grows.

nina2b · 01/09/2017 11:49

Katie Holmes always looked better in a bob:

nina2b · 01/09/2017 11:51

Why is it called pixie cut, by some? All
I see is short hair with layers.

Trills · 01/09/2017 11:56

It's ageing if you get a cut that doesn't suit you, because it makes you look like:
a - you are "of a certain age"
b - you have been told that women of that age shouldn't have long hair
c - you have believed it

WildCherryBlossom · 01/09/2017 12:07

I think you would look beautiful with a Pixie cut. It would focus attention on your lovely features. Go for it. Hair grows!

SweetLuck · 01/09/2017 12:12

I was going to say 'yes, definitely afening', but I think you are one of the few people who would actually suit it!

TheOtherGirl · 01/09/2017 14:56

You need a really skilled stylist if you want a flattering pixie cut. Aim for height at the crown but with a longer fringe to frame your face. Take a look at nataliejayne_semmens on Instagram, I love her pixie cut so much.

SoNouveau · 01/09/2017 16:07

You have to be slim and petite to carry off a pixie cut, you look like it would suit you OP, it can look lovely, sharp and crisp.
Most people over a size 10 or over 40 don't wear it well.
Lumpy and frumpy.

sandgrown · 01/09/2017 16:12

Just make sure you don't end up with the short "man do" a lot of older women have. That is very ageing. I think you would suit a pixie cut though.

ikeadyounot · 01/09/2017 16:21

Oooh, thanks for starting this thread. I'm wondering the same thing.

I had a pixie cut a couple of years ago, and didn't like it at the time. BUT I accidentally came across pictures of it on Facebook (thanks, timehop) and realised that it actually suited me way better than I thought, and that it looked nicer than my current long hair. I think there's something about the heaviness of below the shoulder hair that is starting to drag my features downwards, which is ageing me.

I am also at a point where I feel really, really fed up of looking conventional. I've been worrying for years that my skin is too pale, my hair too mousey (and grey, in my 30s, how unfair). I think I'd rather look striking and stylish but more like the inner me these days. So I'm thinking not only about going very short, but also going white or pale blonde.
