Why is my hair so nice in the Cotswolds?

Just spent a lovely long weekend with friends in the Cotswolds, near Chipping Norton. I washed my hair on Saturday and it's honestly the nicest it's been in years - really soft and not greasy even on day 3 (normally I have to wash at least every other day). Does anyone know if there's something in the water there that's good for your hair?? Can't understand it!

Hard Cotswold water because of all the bloody limestone, although it could be the opposite if you stayed somewhere with a softener fitted, depends on what type of softener they have installed.

I was born in the Cotswolds and have great hair 😎

ReinettePompadour · 28/08/2017 10:47

Soft water will make your hair nicer.

I live in a hard water area and my hair always looks crap.

Its cheaper on the soap/shampoo products in a soft water area too as they foam much better so you can use far less product.

Teddy1970 · 28/08/2017 10:53

The only places that have soft water are parts of the West country, parts of Wales and Scotland..The majority of England is hard water....could it be the minerals perhaps?

MrsEricBana · 28/08/2017 10:57

Yep, your friend has a water softener.

MrsEricBana · 28/08/2017 10:58

Or maybe it's just the CNE (Chipping Norton Effect) Grin

ReinettePompadour · 28/08/2017 11:00

Looking at the online maps the Cotswolds has medium/moderately hard water. If its towards the lower end its more like soft. I live in a very hard area which is miles different in ppm for minerals compared with the Cotswolds.

LotusBlossom1 · 28/08/2017 11:13

That's so strange @ReinettePompadour because I live in Manchester which I'm pretty sure is a soft water area and my hair is definitely not as nice at home... Maybe I've just got weird hair that prefers hard water?! Or maybe it's the particular minerals as @Teddy1970 suggests. Or the CNE! 😂

I always wondered how ladies were so swishy in CN. Now I know.

Actually, I've had the same thing, on hols my hair is fab, at home, not so much, so I changed my shower to a power shower and got the holiday hair result.
Maybe like mine, your shower pump isn't as strong as the one in CN?
It's difficult to rinse out all the product if the shower resembles a feeble watering can like mine did.

I'm well swishy now.

PatMullins · 28/08/2017 11:22

See, my mum has a water softener and my hair always looks shit when I stay there. Our water is very hard and my hairs quite nice Smile

BonApp · 28/08/2017 11:23

I live in a hard water area (abroad) and my hair is horrid because of it. What can I do???? (Other than move to the Cotswolds?)

LotusBlossom1 · 28/08/2017 11:32

As swishy as a CN lady, @GinnyWreckin? Very impressive!

I think the answer is clear, @BonApp - we need to move to the Cotswolds!

How strange - we went to the Cotswolds last summer, and I've just realised my hair looked really nice there too. Effortlessly smooth waves/curls.

And I posted on the 'ugly on holiday' thread about it going frizzy in the heat when abroad.

I must move to the Cotswolds.

NatalieRushman · 28/08/2017 11:39

I live in a soft water area and my hair always looks horrific when I visit hard water areas. I change shampoo to compensate for the lack of lather created by hard water, but my hair just turns lank and horrible. The first thing I do when I get back from holidays is wash my hair Grin

dirtyprettything · 28/08/2017 11:41

A bit of vinegar when you rinse your hair will help, the acid will neutralise the alkaline hard water

ShoesHaveSouls · 28/08/2017 11:42

I live in a hard water area - so I'm wondering if the place we stayed in had a water softener?

There was a definite Cotswolds affect on my hair, because I remember we had a big family wedding when we came back - and I couldn't get it looking as good as it did in the Cotswolds.

nancy75 · 28/08/2017 11:43

I always have lovely hair on holiday in places with soft water, I come home & it's straight back to horrific hair frizz. Dd, who has greasy hair at the moment also found the soft water so much better for her hair. I'm seriously considering getting a water softener installed

nancy75 · 28/08/2017 11:45

dirtyprettything what kind of vinegar? I'm prepared to try anything for better hair but I don't want to smell like a chip shop!

ShoesHaveSouls · 28/08/2017 11:46

DH has just stoutly refused to move to the Cotswolds for the sake of my hair. The bastard.

twilightcafe · 28/08/2017 11:48

The place where you stayed had a water softener.
I live not far from Chipping Norton. The water here is harder than in London. A lot of people I know have water softeners and/or filters.
The one thing I miss about London is being able to drink water straight out of the tap. It tastes gross up here.

StatueInTheSky · 28/08/2017 11:48

my hair is always much better behaved with hard water!....I live with very soft water, but visits to London and Dorset are always good hair times!

BoreOfWhabylon · 28/08/2017 11:48

Yes, vinegar in final rinse - brown or white, doesn't matter much. The smell disappears once it's dry.

Or lemon juice works too (for blondes)

StepAwayFromCake · 28/08/2017 11:50

Bizarrely, I'm having the opposite - soft water is making my hair look awful!

I live in a hard water area and am always fighting frizz. Since we have had a water softener fitted, my hair looks nicer than it has in years. I still get frizz, but now my curls show again.

Right now I'm in the Lake District, where the water is gloriously soft. My skin is in ecstasy: no more sandpaper knees, no more dry, cracking elbows, no more tight cheeks and greasy nose. But my hair is a disaster: lank. No frizz, but no curls, either. Just a vague, lanky wave. It's better if I don't use conditioner at all, just shampoo. Then I spray diluted conditioner on my hairbrush before I brush my hair.

dirtyprettything · 28/08/2017 11:51

Yes, the smell disappears! I have some in a spray bottle which I spray on, I'm using cider vinegar but you could probably use any type

GinnyWreckin · 28/08/2017 11:52

I've heard of movie stars who rinse their hair in Evian. It's on their trailer rider.

Now I know why.....

I suppose a cheaper version would be to get a tank of distilled water from the chemist and douse the frizz with a few cupfulls at the end of the wash?

We'll be putting toothpaste on our nethers next Grin

LotusBlossom1 · 28/08/2017 11:56

@ShoesHaveSouls 😂 the cheek of him!
