Is there an amazing spot treatment that I can buy in America for DD?

Poor DD's spots have really flared up whilst out here and it's making her really self conscious. Can you recommend anything I can buy here for her.

I know sun cream isn't helping the out break but I can't let her stop putting it on.

Can't she wear a wide brimmed hat? I can't wear sun cream on my face at all,it ruins my skin.

DailyMailDontStealMyThread · 26/08/2017 20:03

Sorry, I should have said they are over her shoulders and back. She doesn't want to wear T-shirts because they make her too hot apparently. She is miserable over them. Just wondered if I could buy something here she could start to use and continue at home. I know it won't clear them up now but if there is something her I can't get at home?

A salycilic acid wash for the body shouldn't be too hard to find in a US pharmacy I expect. Otherwise get the Neutrogena one for the face, orange square pump bottle with 2% Salycilic. Do make sure she cleanses off the sun cream at the end of the day to avoid further breakouts.

Also, US only, you can get Differin (Adapalene) which is a synthetic retinoid that used to be prescription only specifically formulated for acne. Don't know how appropriate to use on someone under 18, though I'm sure it is used by spotty teens so best to ask in store if suitable.

DS had differin on prescription at some point from age about 15 so is given to under 18s here - made no difference to him though I am sure it must help some people.

OP you need to get her to a GP when you get home, over the counter stuff is no good for proper acne ime. There is no point her being miserable about it when treatment can help.

You can buy 10% benzoyl peroxide gel from a drugstore or a target. I think you need a prescription for this in the UK

minipie · 27/08/2017 00:03

Re suncream - can you get Ultrasun out there (think it is swiss)? Only suncream not to make me break out, I have long term acne.

Yy to benzoyl peroxide gel from pharmacy. Though weirdly, stronger is not always more effective on acne (but will have more side effects) so I would suggest 5% not 10.

La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo. Plus the Serozinc. You can get it from Ulta.

They work like nothing else I've ever tried.

Pallisers · 27/08/2017 01:08

Go into cvs - they have a whole load of acne treatment stuff. Also you could ask the pharmacist - they are very helpful.

I think CVS does La Roche Posay.

SesameSparkle · 27/08/2017 08:30

You could go look for a more suitable sunscreen - there are some very good ones in the US. I have Neutrogena clear face break out free liquid lotion sunscreen. I also have Neutrogena oil-free moisture with sunscreen. I bought these in target and remember there were quite a few different ones of this type to choose from. Definitely try CVS is that's nearest.

gingerbeerd · 27/08/2017 12:03

I've heard horror stories from the skin care community about salicylic acid so I'd be wary & maybe research a little to see if it's the right fit. If it's not, I'd recommend Mario Badescu drying lotion (used by a lot of celebrities too - quite good for getting cleared up quick), tea tree oil, or witch hazel. The last two you can buy at walmart/health food stores etc.

Hulder · 27/08/2017 12:11

Stridex pads, Cerave moisturiser.

Suncream go for Elta MD or Cerave.

When she gets home, take her to the GP. If she has back and shoulder acne, she needs prescription stuff, not lots of trials of over the counter products, lots of which are badly formulated - essentially so you keep shopping as the problem is never fixed - while she stays miserable and self conscious.

Chestervase1 · 27/08/2017 14:13

Can she have blue light laser therapy (n-lite) whilst she is out there it's amazing

BetterEatCheese · 27/08/2017 14:14

Sulphur cream?

MistressofIndecision · 27/08/2017 14:18

Hi, I asked mil to buy do some Neutrogena body wash when she was there, you can't get it here! It seems to be doing the job but it takes a few weeks to see an improvement

ribbityrabbityroorooroo · 27/08/2017 14:28

I had the same issue with my daughter in July. Definitely go to CVS we bought their own brand acne cream. It is in a blue tube in a blue box. There is also a Clean & Clear version but the own brand is just the same but cheaper. The active ingredient is 10% benzoyl peroxide and it works like magic. You can't get it here and it is so good we bought 3 more tubes to bring home. You have to be sparing with it as it is drying but it is very effective, my daughter was thrilled with the results.

DailyMailDontStealMyThread · 28/08/2017 14:10

Thank you, it's our last day today Sad is this the right one? Picked up a couple of boxes but happy to buy a few more if it has a chance to work.

You've got the 10% there, and you need the 5%.
10 is too strong and will wreck her skin. It's very very drying and can make the skin prone to burning in the sun, scaling with dehydration, and discolouration.

Look at acne.org for the regimen for back acne.
It's gentle persistence that will yield results.

They use cetaphil oily skin wash, a salacylic toner like Clinique toner number 3 and then the benzoyl peroxide 5 or even 2.5% and then a lightweight moisturiser. They also recommend an AHA so the wipes are good for clearing out the blocked pores.
No harsh 10%, no physical scrubbing, and use clean towels each time and change your pillow case every day too.

Be aware that benzoyl peroxide is a bleach and will bleach everything that comes into contact with it, including towels, pillows, sheets and her clothes. She needs white towels, tee shirts and pillowcases as she can bleach the colour out of everything she touches up against including upholstery if she's only wearing spaghetti tops.

She should see a dermatologist / aesthetician ideally and have the spots treated / extracted.

Also try taking her off all milk and cream. She can have cheese.

Also try going on the pill. Not necessarily an androgen blocker, but I found Cilest was great for my back acne.

Sorry, a bit late back to this thread. Yes that's the one, take care it is very strong and drying. Used sparingly though, it works a treat. I hope it is successful for your daughter. I loved CVS, I could have spent hours wandering there!
