Taming thick frizzy hair

Turnbacktime101 · 24/08/2017 21:40

I have thick, wavy (not in pretty way) long frizzy hair. I've let myself go to rack and ruin and leave it up in an unattractive bun most of the time.
Is there a magic treatment / product that will stop me looking like caveman / Jesus on a bad hair day.
Please help

Have you tried the "curly girl method" ? it's a whole hair manangement system which stops the frizz and makes the most of curls. Loads of info on it on t'internet.

Have you tried putting your hair in two plaits overnight? It helps keep my hair neater.

I second the curly girl method; it's all about getting lots of moisture into your hair, which combats the frizz. There's loads of info online, but essentially you stop using your shampoo and both wash and condition with a sulphate free conditioner. I use tresseme botanique or Sainsbury's coconut conditioner. You also make sure that any products you use don't contain drying alcohols.

Curly girl no silicone low sulphate shampoos

I have similar hair, tried the curly girl method for 3 months - it's a fab idea in theory but nope, I just have ugly hair (it's not pretty curly, just wild, even without sulphates and silicones).

Mine is past shoulder length and here's what I do now:

  1. Wash with a Faith in Nature shampoo (lemon or aloe vera - no silicone, but sulphates to clear build up)
  2. Comb in Faith in Nature aloe Vera conditioner - smells odd but it's the only one that smoothes or "slims" my pouffy hair, even the lemon conditioner leaves it massive
  3. Wrap in a microfibre turban to absorb most of moisture
  4. Work in an oil or serum that you like - Moroccan oil, L'Oréal extraordinary oil, frizz ease serum etc. None seem much better than others, just try a few.
  5. Here is the game changer for me - L'ORÉAL KIDS PEAR DETANGLING SPRAY. Chuck loads of it on, it's dirt cheap and contains a peg-3 silicone, which essentially means it washes out easily. Comb that through to the ends.
  6. I avoid blow drying as it goes like an afro, but if you can be arsed just do it with a smoothing brush and dry it SLOWLY, not too hot. Or tie it back and let it dry naturally.
  7. Once dry I might add some Trevor Sorbie straight and shine spray and smooth it over quickly with straighteners, doesn't take long and I don't need it poker straight, just smooth. For extra shine you could try Got2b dry oil spray - makes it shiny with a nice slip, won't leave an oil slick (but go easy).

That will last me 2-4 days depending on weather and strenuous activity!

I have similar hair by the sounds of things, with tight waves but not curls (it's also long). I find it's less frizzy if I don't comb it after washing/conditioning and then let it air-dry, but it is so thick that this process takes around 24 hours and I generally can't be arsed with it, especially in winter. When I do, on a good day, it looks like Cersei Lannister's in Game of Thrones (before her head was shaved!).

Conditioner washing didn't work for me either; I think it works better if you have tight curls/spirals rather than waves.

I therefore resort to blow-drying and straightening to make it look acceptable most of the time. Being very thick, it doesn't get oily quickly and I only need wash it 1/2 times per week, depending on the season, weather etc.

Sorry no magic cure from me OP.

I wash and straighten (the crap out of) mine once a week. I havent found a miracle product but have tried loads. I do really like the SP luxe keratin restore mask though (apply with a normal conditioner and leave for a few mins)

I have thick curly hair that turns to frizz quickly, I sleep in a silk turban on a silk pillowcase to reduce friction. I use kerastase oleo curl cream on damp hair which really defines the curl, I switch this with Show beauty hair oil occasionally and use a Moroccan oil hair mask once a fortnight to keep it from getting too dry. I also don't wash it everyday, sometimes it can go a week without getting greasy or too frizzy but only if I haven't tied it up.
