Is it wrong to buy a maternity dress in the sale...

... if you have no intention of being pregnant, just like the shape?

The reviews of it are very bad, and all the comments say "this was not maternity-shaped enough, there was no room for my bump".

So should I risk it? Or will it obviously be maternity-shaped and the reviewers were just delusional about the size of their bumps?

Usually the front of the dress is longer than the back, and the bump evens the length out. With no bump the hem would probably look odd. Have you tried it on? I bought a maternity top by accident once and loved it!

Do it! I had some mat dresses which I wore after pregnancy, they were rubbish during pregnancy, not big enough at all for bump, but looked great afterwards

Trills · 24/08/2017 20:54

It's online so I've not tried it.

Yeah it should be fine, I've got a couple of maternity dresses that I prefer now

Trills · 24/08/2017 21:14

I'm going to give it a go.

I'll probably have to send some things back anyway.

I've done this! After I had kids, I shopped in the maternity section a bit non pregnant!

The hem thing is true, but something are perfect. Order of you can send back

What brand is it? I have experience and can maybe tell you if they come up ok for non pregnant lol

It's this one from New Look

It was the reviews that made me think it might be OK without a bump, since the reviewers seemed to think it was not OK WITH a bump

Basically I'd like a floaty summer dress for a holiday and I don't want to pay much because I know that I won't wear it much.

I think that you may well end up tripping over the front of it with no bump at all.

Trills · 24/08/2017 21:41

Well it's in my basket now, and I've ordered another top in two sizes so I'll definitely be doing a return.

I don't think it will hang properly, that's a significant bump she's got.

I still wear a few 'early' pregnancy tops (yes, i know, I am the idiot who bought tops specifically for when you're bump isn't showing)

imjessie · 24/08/2017 22:22

I'd Size down ! You can always put a stitch under the bust to keep it up !

Sparrowlegs248 · 24/08/2017 22:38

The new look maternity tops I bought did not cover my bump at all, so hopefully you'll be OK with this.

Heebejeebees · 25/08/2017 02:37

Size down unless you have big boobs or arms! I'm sure it'll come up fine! Maxi dresses hide the hem issue usually. Looks lovely!

I used to buy maternity from h&m and asos. H&m come up super small.

Trills · 20/09/2017 19:13

If you're interested, it came, I decided I wasn't keen.

The reviewers who said there was no room for a bump were right - the one that arrived definitely did not have as much space as the one in the picture, so that part was fine.

The shape at the neckline was just not very nice.
