How often (or not) to wash really greasy hair?

I have always been an oily sort (both hair and skin). I can wash my hair in the morning and, if warm/busy, by the afternoon my roots have almost lumped together in sections and look really flat and greasy.

General consensus seems to be that the more you wash greasy hair, it strips the scalp of natural oils so it works harder to produce more (therefore making the problem worse).

After years of daily washing, I've changed and used a combination of dry shampoo/ clipping hair back/ blow drying after wash- to wash every other day. This has taken about 3 months, but i'm now at the stage where actually, it looks fine day one and pretty good day two (even without dry shampoo).

I'm now wondering if I should push to every three days? Washing day 1 (blow drying), leaving day 2, then dry shampoo day 3? Would this help overall oil production slow down so looked better on other day?

Just to add, happy to add my full routine if anyone else is like me and really struggles with su per oily hair- it's taken me a good few years to get to a stage where I can wash every second day so feel the pain! I actually found mine embarrassing on weekends away etc as it looked so bad the next morning if I'd washed the day before.

I am prone to greasy hair. Not to the extent that you describe, but my roots get oily very quickly.

Over the past five years or so, I've gone from washing every day (the WORST thing you can do for greasy hair) to washing every four days. I should add that I still shower every day!

I always wear my hair up, use a good dry shampoo each morning and avoid touching it too much. I never use conditioner. It really does look so much better now. Have you found a good cleansing shampoo?

I'm blonde and bleach my hair, then put a toner on top. This has dried it out too which helps no end.

I sort of alternate the 2 days/3 days depending on what I am doing. Although now I am cycling to work, that has somewhat thrown a spanner in the works as sweaty helmet head does not help with greasy hair!

The Redken cleansing shampoo is a really great one to use to strip out any product. I use it once a week or so and it definitely helps to get rid of styling products and dry shampoo.

I can go about 4 days, but not if I have had a 'sweat' on, but that may be because I am frequently dyeing my hair. Before it was every other day. However if it gets rained on, the next day it is so dirty. I use Klorane shampoo with mango butter and the conditioner because although it is greasy, the scalp is sensitive and I am careful because I don't want the dye to wash out too quick.

I put no other product on my hair (no mousse, spray etc as they are dirt and grime magnets to me).

I can go three days but only with dry shampoo on the third day and really only when I use this pink Herbal Essence shampoo in the old-skool bottle. Something and Shine.

Some other people have had luck with some anti-dandruff shampoos as well, I think one of the Vosene ones but not sure which.

I hate my hair feeling even remotely greasy so just wash it every day, it is in really good condition so don't see why I shouldn't.

I used to wash my hair daily but over the last few years have got down to every other day. In the winter I go down to every three days with dry shampoo on the third day.
