Want to change my boring hair (pics included)

Really want to shake up my hair style. Its long and really really wiry/thick. I can only afford to get it done about 2-3 times per year so anything high maintenance is out of the question.

I look like a Lego head; its blocky and all one length and is a shit ombré style because of aforementioned lack of salon visits.

I've got a massive forehead so was thinking a fringe. Wouldn't be a bother to get it trimmed regularly and would save time drawing my eyebrows on 😂 If I could afford it I'd go for a bright bright blonde but without going every couple of months my roots would be terrible. Brown all over doesn't suit me. Defo couldn't pull off a pixie cut and don't want to be that drastic, but I'm pretty fed up of it and would like something Different to just hanging thick and loose. Pics are the front and the side.

Suggestions bloody welcome!

I think your hair looks nice. Doesn't look blocky at all! I love the length!

CaseStudyResearch · 22/08/2017 15:30

I'd get some long layers, shaped round the face with a bit of a curtain fringe.

Really like the colour as it is, you could always get some of those wash out pastels to play round a bit.

I think it looks nice!

Would you not be comfortable doing your roots yourself?

Samsara123 · 22/08/2017 15:40

Nowt wrong with it.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 22/08/2017 15:41

It's nice but I'd want a few long layers. It isn't blocky at all.

hiimmumma · 22/08/2017 15:44

I had a fringe and I'm useless at going to the salon too.
It's actually easy to trim yourself but also I like it when it's growing out and swept to the side or parted (similar to pp Kirsten dunst picture)
and once it's really grown out you can go back to the hair dressers and get it shaped around the face, or feathered. Then repeat every 6 months basically!

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 22/08/2017 15:49

I'd spend the money on more regular trims. If it's thick and wiry, keep the length and get a few long layers.

I'd dye it at home. Just do some research on the type of dye you need and how it will take to your hair. A mid/dark ash blonde would look good. Avoid the light bright blonde; it's too damaging and very high maintenance.

Sparkletastic · 22/08/2017 16:04

God it's gorgeous. Love the cut and colour. I've got fluffy hair that looks shit when I try and grow it Envy

LorLorr2 · 22/08/2017 16:07

From the front in particular it looks really nice and not boring at all!!
If you want a change you could have some layers in for a bit of movement?

Hillingdon · 22/08/2017 16:07

its very pretty and so much of it. My hairdresser does fringe trims for free (posh one - not all do!) so that might be the way forward.

I don't dye my hair but that is where the cost is. As others said some long layers. Don't go mega short. I suspect with hair as nice as yours you will regret it

1wokeuplikethis · 22/08/2017 16:15

I worry about layers and have never had them because what about when I want to tie it up or plait it? They go all sticky-outy don't they? Although think that's the only way to get rid f the blockiness, isn't it?

Thanks for the compliments, but it's a pain in the arse. And I have terrible dandruff because I only wash it twice a week as it takes an hour to dry with a hairdryer and approx 6 years to dry naturally...

Taken another pic now to show the (shit) colour better and the wiriness

I was expecting to see a picture of bad hair and you surprised me with really nice coloured, good conditioned, locks!

1wokeuplikethis · 22/08/2017 16:20

I don't think I can pull off short and I get a cold neck anyway.

I used to home dye years ago when at university and poor (still poor) and it went a terrible orangey colour. Are there good dyes that don't cost the earth and that you can use on graduated hair? I worry it would go mega patchy over the existing patchiness.

I trim my fringe myself. I'm truly crap at stuff like that but with youtube and some cheap hairdressing scissors on amazon I do it myself every couple of weeks and the hairdresser (that I see for a decent trim esp of the layers every 3 or so months) is always very complimentary about my work.

I have long very thick hair that can be wiry, without layers I'd have mad triangle head, layers make it much prettier and more manageable and I put my hair up all the time.

I wash my hair about twice a week, it would be horribly dry if I did it more often. It shouldn't give you dandruff, so I'd try different products. Try and avoid anything with sulphates which can be very drying.

Ditch the eyebrow pencil and start using Wonderbrow. It's £20 a tube but I'm using the same one 2 years later so I reckon much cheaper than having to keep buying pencils, and apply it with a mega cheap superdrug lip brush. It's incredible value and I love it. Sooooo much cheaper in the long run and less hassle. I do mine every 3ish days. It literally stays on in the shower if I avoid my brows with face cleanser.

AnneLovesGilbert · 22/08/2017 16:44

If you reckon you can do this, I'd get a fringe cut in and then maintain it yourself.

Bluntness100 · 22/08/2017 16:53

Your hair is lovely, I'm not sure what you're talking about !

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 22/08/2017 17:53

If you do try a home dye, go for an ash shade, sometimes called cool or ice blonde and stay away from warm colours; honey, caramel etc. That should prevent orange tones.
L'Oreal or Nice and Easy work best for me.
A strand test is essential just to check you like it. You'll also need to regularly use a decent purple toner to avoid brassiness.

I would try a dark ash blonde first, concentrate on the roots and pull the dye lightly through your blonder ends. You can leave it developing for up to an hour for a lighter look, although most will recommend around 45mins developing time.

I can't stress enough to test first on an underneath piece of hair. Pour out a tiny amount from both bottles in your dye kit, mix on a saucer and apply to a small section of hair a few days beforehand to avoid any colour disasters!
The picture on the front of the box is not how the dye will take to your hair, it's very misleading and depends entirely on your base colour.

gingerbreadmam · 22/08/2017 18:06

is the dark colour of your hair dye? if so dont try and lightening it.

If i was you i would go to a salon and get a bayalage. You gould get a light brown then get the light bits even lighter. Altho it would be a big outlay at first it will be easy to maintain after the initial colour. The colour at the moment is a bit 'block'.

The cut - the kirsten dunst picture is ideal and you can add some waves easily with your straighteners.

You do have gorgeous hair i get bored like u too tho and prefer not much maintenance.

SummerRoberts · 22/08/2017 18:17

Your hair is gorgeous! I love it. I have to say I've never been a fan of the ombré fashion though. That's just me, as I know so many others love it. But I love your length and colour.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 22/08/2017 18:19

You could try curling the ends loosely if you're just bored of the style? It's easy to do with GHD's, lots of tutorials online.

JamesBlonde1 · 22/08/2017 18:21

I recommended this to another lady. "A" line bob. Could have it whatever colour you wanted. Longer at the front than the back. But if you colour yourself perhaps you could afford regular trims?

Thank you v much for the hints and tips! And I'm chuffed at the compliments but can't help feeling the photos are a bit too kind to properly show my current situation.

I've got a hair apt booked for highlights throughout as I'd like to go for a more even look and a cut (definitely asking for layers, pretty convinced on a fringe of some sort) but I'm scared because every time I've had a fringe in the past - over ten years ago now - I've always hated them for a few weeks until they grow out a bit.

I like the Cheryl hair, but feel it would age me a bit. So basically, I want a change, but am scared to change....yep, I don't know either.

Am definitely interested in colouring my own hair. Do you think that's possible after having highlights, when they start to grow out a bit?

OP posts:
gingerbreadmam · 23/08/2017 09:11

if you colour your hair yourself after highlights you will just end up blending them out.

you could get highlights and a colour all over at the salon but have the highlights underneath iyswim then just do your roots at home.

the kirsten dunst fringe is worth going for as it is longer and not a full fringe so from what u have said u will cope better with that.
