Saying goodbye to an old and much-loved pair of black leather boots, similar to these: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Born-BC3642-Concept-B-O-C-Knee-High-Buckle-Plain-Toe-Boots-Women-039-s-US-9-5-/122659607196?

I must have worn them three/four times a week over 10 years and could walk miles in them. The pasty-shaped toe is comfy and roomy. They balance my chunky legs so I can wear skinny jeans/shorter skirts. Half my winter wardrobe doesn't make sense without them.

I'm asking for new boots for my next (50th) birthday. Ideally looking for

  • British- or European-made
  • comfortable
  • flat
  • roomy toe
  • knee-high
  • casual/chunky/scruffy/edgy engineer or biker boot style

Haven't found quite the right thing but I suspect the assembled MN shopping wisdom can't be beat. Smile

Dubarry - £££ but worth every penny. Lots of styles, I have Clare, Galway and Longford arrived today for my birthday tomorrow!! Otherwise my other favourites are Fly but can be a bit hit and miss waterproof wise.

PuffinsSitOnMuffins · 21/08/2017 14:18

Sorry no contribution just marking my place - I'll need to replace my boots exactly like this at some point and it's really hard to find anything made for my shaped feet (wide at the toes).

Alwaysatyke · 21/08/2017 14:26

I got some Reiker boots earlier this year and I bloody love them, not cheap but oh so comfy and feel like they'll last forever. Not exactly this style but similar:

I think you should check out Fly London boots..definitely the same style vibe as the ones you linked to..and Flys are incredibly comfortable too.

xyzandabc · 21/08/2017 14:33

My Fly London boots have done me 5 years so far and are super comfy. A few different styles probably fit your brief.
Sorry, can't remember how to clicky link from phone!

I highly reccomend Bertie. If you take good care of them they will outlive you.

PNGirl · 21/08/2017 15:45

I have a previous incarnation of these:

Dr Martens aren't British Made any more are they? Although I do love my 2 pairs. Can't beat them for chunky/scruffy!

arousingcheer · 21/08/2017 16:51

PNGirl they are very nice, though rather smart. Maybe I'm just used to my clapped-out pair looking scruffy and will have to cope with looking smart for a while. Smile Are they comfy? Reviews are mixed. Do you know if they're made in Europe? I can't tell from their site.

Except for one of their lines (classics?) afaik Dr Martens haven't been made in the UK in many years. They don't suit my feet for some reason. Always too small or too large. I've bought and given up more than one pair so it's not for lack of trying.

It's funny, mostly everything I think looks close is either too countrified/horsey, too 90s gothy or too tidy/workwear.

PuffinsSitOnMuffins if it helps, so far I'm considering these but none are quite right.
Too short: www.thenaturalshoestore.com/brands/nature-sko/nature-sko-202-calf-yankee-leather-black.html
Ditto: www.duckfeet.com/duckfeet-womens-collection/duckfeet-kobenhavn-detail
Not sure what isn't quite right here, maybe a bit too countryfied: www.tedandmuffy.com/womens-boots/knee-high/black-leather/finch/TMB71147.html?dwvar_TMB71147_color=1
And as PNGirl suggested above, these look pretty good: www.tedandmuffy.com/womens-boots/knee-high/black-leather/demeter/TMB15130.html?dwvar_TMB15130_color=1
Are Ugg-type styles over? These aren't anything like my beloved boots but I've had them before and know they fit: www.celticandco.com/sheepskin-boots/womens-sheepskin-boots/celt-knee-boot

Also scouring eBay for an identical old pair in my size.

Yeah, they're made in Portugal according to here:

www.tedandmuffy.com/fitted-shoes.html

I have a pair of Celts from a couple of years ago. I do love them, but they don't necessarily replace a pair of leather stompy boots for me.

arousingcheer · 22/08/2017 11:57

Thanks PNGirl. I agree, the Celts are not quite the right thing. They're kind of a fallback option just in case.

I'm a little worried about buying an expensive pair of boots and finding down the road that they aren't comfortable (the kind of discovery you only make once you've worn them for hours).

Have you looked at Moshulu? these look quite similar to your old pair www.moshulu.co.uk/furze-mid-length-leather-boots.html

PNGirl · 22/08/2017 13:48

Mine are very comfy but then my Duo/Ted & Muffy stuff seems to suit my feet.

I can't speak as to comfort but a few women on here bought from this company last year. Might be a bit fussy but well-priced.

arousingcheer · 22/08/2017 13:56

Squ1ggle thank you, there are a number of styles there that may work.

PNGirl great, thanks, will look there too.
