What coat to wear to wedding, with a smart casual dress

I'm a guest, not the bride, just to be clear.

I've managed to get a lovely dress which was a steal from Sainsbury's (am almost two full sizes over my ideal at the moment so none of the rest of my 'nice' wardrobe fits me). I've sorted accessories but suddenly realised I don't have a smart coat or a blazer to wear over it. Everything I've got in my current size is way too casual or too 'worky'. I also don't go to many occasion-type things unless they're in the evening, so I don't really know what you're supposed to wear. What sort of thing would you suggest? Some photos/links would be great, but don't worry too much about specifics as unfortunately the wedding is imminent and I don't have a lot of time to look.

I'm going out tomorrow to see if I can find something, but I don't know what to go for. Mindlessly had a look at blazers/jackets today but couldn't find anything I liked that went with the dress.

What sort of thing would you wear over it, if it were you?

Are you able to link the dress? Is it a church wedding? If not does it need something over it.

Oops forgot to include link....

I probably wouldn't wear anything over it

HolgerDanske · 20/08/2017 18:37

It's not a church wedding and my sister (the bride) is not fussy about it being too smart. I probably don't actually need something over it during the ceremony/day in general, but we're staying in a hotel and going to and from the venue etc on the day and I thought I should probably have something. But maybe it's not necessary?

Oh I wouldnt wear a coat or jacket over that!

NapQueen · 20/08/2017 18:38

Nah, not unless the wedding is mid winter.

HolgerDanske · 20/08/2017 18:41

Oh okay good. It's really just for making our way back and forth (and I'm a bit funny about having a 'full outfit', but really don't go to many things like this so don't have a frame of reference for what most people do).

I probably have a scarf/wrap that coordinates well so I guess I could bring that if I need to.

What month is the wedding? If it's just for going to and fro, it doesn't have to be part of your outfit. Just wear your normal coat and take it off when you get there.

HolgerDanske · 20/08/2017 19:49

It's this weekend coming Smile

The only thing that fits me at the moment that's suitable for the weather is a trench coat (mid length, I guess? Just over my knees, I think) but I just thought it might look a bit odd

I wouldn't bother with anything tbh, just wear the dress

HolgerDanske · 20/08/2017 21:03

Thanks. You're right, it's not as if we're going to be traipsing around town or anything.

I wouldn't wear a coat with that. Just take a brolly in your handbag for nipping between venues if it is likely to rain.
