Yes of course they will go in and out of favour when it comes to fashion trends but I think they're classic enough that they can be considered a staple. And of course it depends on whether they fit your general style quite well - if they do, they'll always look good. I've deliberately not picked ones that are too identifiable as of a certain time, though. You can also avoid looking too out of date by ensuring there are current elements to the rest of your outfit.

I want another one so bad, I'm sitting on my hands at the moment as I'm sorely tempted to buy a lovely one I've seen.

Veterinari · 18/08/2017 18:53

Agree a classic but it does look too big

Floisme · 18/08/2017 18:56

I still think that when they do fall out of favour they'll look really dated for a while (unless worn by genuine bikers of course). Because that's how fashion works. I'm not trying to piss on the op's chips and it sounds like a very good buy. I'm just cautioning against this idea that it's a wear forever purchase. If it is, I think it'll be a first.

scaryclown · 18/08/2017 18:59

You need jeans.
Try with jeans and some heelage.. :)

HolgerDanske · 18/08/2017 19:09

True enough. I suppose it depends on how much you're spending and how long you want to be able to wear it - i never spend too much on leather jackets because I don't want to feel that I have to keep wearing them forever. I usually think in terms of five years -ish, and by the time they fall completely out of favour, when it does happen, I probably won't care too much as I'm of an age now where I can't really be achingly cool and on-trend anymore anyway (in fashion terms at least). I am quite happy to stay true to my own style and just keep broadly in line with current trends.

Sorry for derailing your thread, OP! What I'd probably do if I were you is go back and try the size down, and then pick the one that looks best on you or you feel most comfortable with. Look at current seasons on various websites to get ideas for styling it.

Whitney168 · 18/08/2017 19:09

Classic, but too big (and should be proper leather!)

travis45 · 18/08/2017 19:17

It's lovely. Keep it undone though 😁

LunaTheCat · 18/08/2017 19:36

I think it looks great - like it better open though. Personally I like the floaty dress and biker jacket look. But I also think it looks great open how you have styled

Beadieeye · 18/08/2017 23:59

Biker jackets never look dated.
The colour is autumnal and makes a change from black.
Going against the grain here, but I think they normally look better zipped up with jeans/trousers/skirts as they look more fitted and flattering.
They do look nice open
,especially with dresses, but tend to look boxy or make the torso look wider but it all depends on the length of the jacket, how soft the leather is and how narrow/wide shoulders are.
Anyhoo, you look great!

CheckingMyPrivilege · 19/08/2017 07:49

Topshop has suede and blue suede biker jackets right now so no, that's not dated!

Try with striped top inside :)

Emboo19 · 19/08/2017 11:31

Nah, not dated bikers are still in! I hope anyway, I have 4 leather and one suede. I'm 19 and wearing one today, not that I should have to in August!

Really the most important thing is if you like it and feel comfortable. I don't prescribe to what's in or not. Fashion and style should be personal. If you like it wear it, that's my moto anyway.

Does look a tad loose (you don't look a size 14 though either, you have lovely slim legs) but think it will go really nice with autumnal coloured jumpers under as it gets cooler.
Never bothers me if it's faux leather either, although my real leather are the most lush in sense of how they fall and feel, but for colours I wouldn't wear as often real leathers not worth the price label.

Floisme · 19/08/2017 11:53

The thing is, most of us like to believe we're not slaves to fashion. However - and I am speaking strictly for myself - I have no other explanation as to why I haven't worn my lightly flared corduroy trousers for 10 years, or my fitted velvet blazer, even though I like them and think they still suit me. (Admittedly I'm not sure if the cords will still fit but I have high hopes for the velvet blazer this autumn).

I think it's fascinating how clothes we thought were staples gradually start to look dated.... and then pop back over the horizon 10 or 20 years later looking fresh and desirable all over again.

Sorry for hijack op.

Botanicbaby · 19/08/2017 12:12

I like the colour actually, I think it suits you. Is the zip a side/diagonal one as if so, that's maybe why dh says it's old-fashioned?

However, I'd wear it if I liked it and felt happy with it on. No matter what anyone else said, dh included!

I agree it looks too big for you especially about the arms. I like it zipped up but I'm entirely sick of the ubiquitous oversize scarf, open jacket and skinny jeans look though so am probably biased.

StarHeartDiamond · 19/08/2017 12:28

It's fine but it's not dark enough to be a flattering shade of khaki. It looks a bit washed - out. Which is maybe why your dh is thinking old-fashioned, perhaps he means old looking item.

HolgerDanske · 24/08/2017 09:43

Flo yes you're right, I find it really interesting too. There are some pieces I know I'll never wear again, partly because they're just not quite right anymore, but also because I'm not young and cool enough to pull them off. I won't look interesting and edgy, I'll just look as if I don't quite know what I'm doing. I think also that I'm at least one size too big to get away with some things.

PaganGoddessBrigid · 24/08/2017 09:50

Well yes, ''staples'' last five years at the most!

Things that we look at and feel are timeless, they're not.

But at least you get a few years out of them!

BumWad · 24/08/2017 09:56

I've got the grey one in that and am always a sweaty Betty in it
