OH MY GOD Mould is growing on the outside of my stunning designer bag

I have a stunning Celine bag that I bought in a sale in Milan pre-kids.

Two house moves and a child later and I finally took it out of the back of a cupboard tonight. DD is starting school I feel like I am getting the old me back style-wise, and I wanted to start using my gorgeous bag on a more regular basis, like I used to, rather than the crappy old bags filled with DD's pencils and half-eaten snacks that I've been carrying around for 4 years.

To my utter horror (and stupidity, though sleep deprivation may have played a part) when I put it away when DD was about 2 months old, belatedly cottoning on that my old life would have to take a back seat for a bit, I'm pretty sure there was some chocolate or something left in there.

It's made the lining manky, obv, which I'm hoping is relatively easily fixed. But worse is whatever vile fungus it now is, it has spread from inside to one outer corner (kind of where one of the 'feet' of the bag is, if that makes sense)

It's white/grey and furry and about a 2 inch square patch.

Is this salvageable, do you think, and if so how?

It was about £500 when I bought it, reduced from close to £1k, so it's worth spending to try to fix it. And I will kick myself very very hard and repeatedly for evermore if my carelessness has ruined one of the nicest and certainly the most expensive items I've ever owned.

Furniture clinic is run by the same people as handbag clinic I believe.

I had a complete nightmare with the handbag clinic too - they did a terrible colour match on my beautiful Anya Hindmarch bag, and the metalwork they refurbished looked awful too. Really disappointing experience. I paid through PayPal and ended up with a full refund for the refurb cost but the bag was unusable really, and there was no recourse for that.

I'd just clean it off myself with tack cleaner. Sometimes old tack goes mouldy and I clean it off then use Milton.

I put a mouldy pair of leather gloves in the washing machine! Let them air dry then massaged with hand cream. If it's very soft leather it's basically skin so treat as skin Smile

These guys have good reviews on Facebook and in some of the handbag groups. Might be worth a quote??

Removing white mold from leather is definitely possible. I have cleaned many a furry white horse bridle over the years and the always come up perfect so long as I use the right products.

I think your issue will be the lining. Good idea to send it away to a specialist, I don't think it's really one to tackle on your own.

Just a quick update and thanks again to everyone who posted...

I've taken it into the Handbag Clinic where (for a slightly eye-watering sum, but a price I'm prepared ot pay to hopefully fix it) they assured me they could clean the mould, restore the leather beneath and replace the wrecked lining.

It'll be several weeks but I'm crossing everything the end result is worth it.

Thanks so much and will update for anyone who's still interested in a few weeks' time, hopefully with positive news!

MamaOfTwos · 20/08/2017 16:13

Yay! So glad that beautiful bag can be restored ❤️

Oldraver · 20/08/2017 17:52

I hope your handbag comes up lovely...and I will look at that Furnitur clinic link for my handbag problem.

I contacted a company for advice on what to used to clean a bag I'd bought and they said they wont recommend any..I would have to trial and error...not impressed
