Supplements, weigh loss and the perimenopause

Are there any supplements that anyone has tried to balance hormones and get things in order as the menopause is approaching. I have noticed a weight gain that makes me miserable and would like to put a stop to it now.

Keto keto keto

Honestly it's a godsend for me...

I did the low carb high fat diet 5 months ago and put weigh on. Ever since I have not eaten bread, rice, pasta or potatoes but I have eaten fruit (and sugar and alcohol).

Definitely some sort of low carbing, has helped my weight gain and hot flushes disappear immensely.

Including fruit justpoppingby?

Not sure any supplements are needed, as long as you eat a healthy varied diet and get your calcium (leafy greens or dairy)

I am trying to eat just a little bit less, as diets do my head in Grin so instead of 2 slices of toast and peanut butter for breakfast, I have 1 slice, and a slice of melon. I call this "tweaking" Smile. Works for me.

Perimenopausal here too.

I am taking a multivitamin for women, 200mg of magnesium (getting 100mg from multivit, so 300mg) and one tablet of black cohosh (6.5mg). Feeling a lot better for it.

I lost a lot of weight before summer but put some back on. I need to get back on it. My gym is full of peri/menopausal women who look toned, fit and gorgeous. They do a mixture of cardio and strength. I know they are menop as we all have a chat about it. Months back when I was struggling with sleep and unexplained anxiety I was told to take up running. I have never been able to run but can now run 45 mins on a treadmill at quite a fast pace and the post feeling is amazing.

My diet is very good, but I still feel much better after taking the vitamins.

Fruit is high carbs really, 100g of apple is about 14/15 carbs and I lost 8kg in 6 weeks by having 50 total carbs a day using my fitness pal to track measures.
I lost my 'middle aged spread' Tunney very quickly, but lost size rather than weight. I can't do low fat, I like cheese and creamy foods too much 😁

wobblywonderwoman · 18/08/2017 12:32

Could anyone link to a basic plan they recommend.

justpoppingby · 18/08/2017 14:20

There are several low carb threads and a boot camp on here in the weight loss section I think.
(I did my own plan as I can be a bit of fussy eater. )

Since you've asked specifically about supplements, my colleague has been taking this with good results.
I use this website a lot. Under the product details there are some linked articles. www.victoriahealth.com/product/Sage-Complex/7501

I have reduced carbs with some success and use Huel for 2 meals a day out of three. It works well for me. It is not a diet food or protein shake, it is a nutritionally complete food which is perfectly balanced for the needs of adults.

I have had 2 portions today, a few cheeky snacks ( oatcakes with Philly, roast chicken). We are having Thai green curry with whole grain basmati rice for tea.
I allowed myself the snacks today as I did a 10k run this morning. I will probably have a couple of squares of dark chocolate later too.

I take Vit D, omega 3, and probiotic supplements and went back on the pill to deal with declining oestrogen levels as part of the perimenopause.

I have lost about a stone over 2 months doing that.

I also run, and would also use weights at gym if time was on my side! Strength training is key for this age group.

dementedma · 20/08/2017 20:07

I take an Omega 3 high strength capsule which has really helped with joint ache. Also am on HRT. Gained quite a lot of weight but am slowly losing it by cutting down sugar and alcohol. I dont do any exercise.
