Dress with trainers or other clumpy shoes

I need orthotics in my shoes, so I end up mostly in trainers or similar. In winter, if I want to wear a dress or skirt I can wear it with boots (minimal heel, high-sided), but boots are far too hot in summer, so I end up in trousers all the time.

Are there any styles of dress that I could wear with trainerish shoes?

I'm 50, tall, size 16/18. (Hoping to get to 14/16!).

To give you an idea, these are the shoes I'm wearing right now:

Bit lower end than some of these, but try New Look. They have a really good wide fit range, and have lots of canvas pump/trainer type shoes in at the moment.

Something like this?

Or I'd go for something like these

I live in flats since a back injury but also love my dresses.
In winter i have chelsea boits and they are in again this year its just a case of finding ones that will accomodate your insert.
Are converse a no go ? I have black satin ones I wear in winter with tights and dressed and rose gold ones I wear in summer with shorts and dresses, no tights but I do wear invisible trainer socks as cant stand bare feet in shoes.

The newer style converse have an removable inner sole so pop them out and hopefully you'll have room for your insert.

Look at Red or Dead or Oxygen Shoes.

I like the dress and trainers look - because I like mixing clothing A shear summer dress with boot or trainers, a beautiful tailored or flimsy top with jeans, a Denim jacket and floral dress.
I don't think you will need to worry ...you will look great!

I generally can't manage the simple plimsole-style shoes, as the orthotic makes me lift straight out of them. Ditto with slip-ons.

The day after I got my orthotics I bought a pair of gold high-top Vans. I don't think I've had a pair of high-tops since I was about 18! But the high lacing means that they accommodate the orthotics, and because they were the last pair in the shop they practically paid me to take them away (well, not exactly - they cost £11, which I though was quite good!).

What do you think, gold high tops with that linen dress? They're not shiny gold, more a brassy shimmery gold.

I haven't tried converse in years, because they were just too flat for me, but if they have a lift-out sole, then they might work with the orthotic, so I could try them.

I wear a lot of skater dresses with boots or thicker trainers (eh. hi-top vans) and they work well together. H&M currently have a range of cheap but cute skater dresses in a range of prints and colours and they're very comfy and stretchy so nice for casual wear, or a bit dressier if paired with some boots.

I wear purple high tops with a dress like that so you will be classier than me. Wink Remember to look at yourself in a full length mirror. Feet generally look weird when you look straight down.

Ollycat · 18/08/2017 18:02

I wear Stan Smith trainers with dresses (and I wear them to work too Shock )

Lymmmummy · 18/08/2017 18:03

I have sketchers which I find very good

There are stores that cater for older women that will sell chunky shoes that are still feminine. Alternatively try tshirt dresses-e.g. Joules Brett on stripe dresses (you know what I'm talking about right?) those kinds of dresses are nice and sporty so it looks even better than sandals. The key seems to be short and sporty I think. No ruffles/Mack skirts basically.

+1 to Stans

I wear my orthotics with my Stan Smiths, which go beautifully with my summer dresses

In winter I love a floral dress with a stompy biker boot. If I go girly with one garment I like to give it a bit of an edge

I struggle to get my orthotics into Gazelles, can just about do it, but not comfortably. Stans no problem though

I was in London earlier this week and spent some time chilling out in Trafalgar Square listening to the buskers and people watching.

Trust me, I saw just about every combination of clothes known to man, including some styles I never even imagined - the young chap with a smart snappy grey suit, red shirt, snazzy hat and red/blue stripy socks, pulled high, which you saw as his trousers were 7/8 length!

Wear what you feel comfy in and if needs be start a trend! I started one back when I was 11 - to wear your dad's cricket jumper! It caught on right across my school!

fabulousathome · 18/08/2017 21:03

Vionic shoes have an orthotic lining already. Some of the designs are nice, especially the sandals. You can try them by buying via QVC. Send them back if no good.

I've been wearing Superga trainers all summer www.superga.co.uk/item/1274/Superga/Superga-2750-Cotmetu-Rose-Gold.html I think they're great with dresses and skirts, as well as trousers. I wear them with invisible trainer socks - got a multi-pack from H&M. They have a little rubbery bit inside the heel top to keep them in place.

tailspin · 19/08/2017 05:42

I wear fully black sneakers (no coloured detail anhwhere, black laces, black soles etc) with black tights under a dress and no one even notices I'm wearing sneakers. Mine are Asics.

bananafish81 · 19/08/2017 07:47

I struggled with Superga, I couldn't get my foot and the orthotics into the shoe. I loved the look of the trainer, but just didn't work with my orthotics

Converse was also tricky, as are gazelles.

Stan Smiths are big enough and have enough give to manage both my foot and the large plastic orthotic that I have - they're custom made, so significantly larger than a simple insole
