Hair dilemmas.

My hair is a hot mess right now and I don't know what to do. I will book a colour consultation but does anyone have any advice...?

My hair is a dyed dark brown colour. My natural hair is dirty blonde with lots of grey. I'd like to embrace the grey now and have been growing out my roots. It's getting to the stage where the roots are fairly obvious and it doesn't look awful but it doesn't look great either. So should I:

A) leave it and just keep growing, healthiest option but then it will look awful for years as I also want to grow it long. It's shoulder length now.

B) use a colour B4 type product and try to remove the brown dye. Has anyone used this? I've read mixed, leaning towards positive reviews.

C) dye the ends to match the roots. Not sure if this is entirely possible but they might be able to get it closer. Obviously this will damage my hair.

Just to complicated matters, I've gone sulphate and silicone free which my hair is pretty happy with and in terms of texture and frizz it's looking better so I don't want to ruin this with lots of sulphates.

Any suggestions? I appreciate this is a very boring thread so thanks for reading. It's my brother's wedding soon and I don't want to feel awful looking at the photos of my two-time hair!

Dye it in a lighter brown. Then next time even brighter and so on until you reach the "dirty blond with lots of grey" nuance. After a year or so, the dark brown will eventually reach shoulder length, or earlier than that if you decide to cut your hair shorter. (I understand it's a dilemma, had the same situation a few years ago.)

Thanks for your reply. That does sound like a good idea, but to dye it lighter would I have to bleach it anyway? In which case I might as well go the whole hog.

All hair dyes that lighten your hair will contain some bleach. it is possible to lighten your hair and avoid any obvious damage though. I think the best option would be to have it professionally lightened to a grey colour with ash blonde highlights, if you can afford that.

Colour B4 will strip out your brown dye to an extent but you will have to dye over the slightly gingery hue you will be left with. I don't think you should go down that route unless you're competent with home dye kits.

The other option might be to use a non permanent brown dye to cover your roots just for the wedding? That will gradually wash out and you can go back to growing out your roots.

I know you don't want to cut your hair but the easiest way to go from dyed to natural grey without obvious roots is to get a short cut and grow it out.

How about chopping it all off and going for a pixie (no dye)? Healthier hair growing out. No roots to deal with? There are a couple of older threads on here with people having the same dilemma. Let me see if I can find them.

I've done the same thing quite successfully by having blended foils over the past few months that make the regrowth look ok. After two sets of fouls six weeks apart I feel like it's all blended through ok and I don't need to colour anymore.

So I have spent five years going completely natural and I started by going shoulder length, getting to two inch roots and messing around with undercuts and bobs - what I should have done was long pixie and just grown it out.

This is honestly the easiest less painful and expensive way. My hair is now all natural but a mix of white and brown and just below chin length. Now I know what it looks like so can decide on a cut
