Which is the best hairdryer? Parlux... or something else?

I have been using a rubbish travel hairdryer for years but it's time for an upgrade.
Do expensive hairdryers really make a difference and if so which one should I get?

I have a Parlux, and I don't know if it's loads better, but it definitely dries my hair quicker, and it's much less frizzy.

molemonkey · 15/08/2017 22:28

I have one that I bought from my hair dressers it's by 'lable m' I'm on my second one the first lasted around 10 years and I'm on year 5 with this one.
I think it cost around £60 but it's so worth it, cuts the drying time in half as it's more powerful than a regular shop bought one.

I love my ghd one, can tell the difference if I use my mums. I have very fine hair and feel because it's more powerful I get more ummph!

Littlelouse · 15/08/2017 22:47

Buy a Dyson! Honestly, it's so worth the money. I've had mine nearly a year and it's so much quieter and lighter than anything I've owned before.

blameitonthebipolar · 15/08/2017 23:00

I love my Diva 3600 professional, i bought it at my hairdressers as it's what she uses herself and said they're better than Parlux.

I had no idea or not if this was true but when i started my hairdressing course we had Parlux and I would agree with my hairdresser.
They're powerful for sure but are very heavy.

My brother bought the Dyson one for my sil at Christmas and she sent it back! I was so jealous she had one, she just didn't like it at all.

tigercub50 · 15/08/2017 23:03

Can't remember what I have but although it seems hot & powerful, it just doesn't seem to dry my hair! Will have to invest in a pro model

Bodicea · 15/08/2017 23:06

I love my dyson. I had a diva before that, which is a similar level to parlux. I wash and dry my hair daily and I have a lot of hair so need it to be fast. That's my main priority.
It is the same level of power as my diva and drys in a similar time so for three times the price you might initially think it isn't worth it. But I feel like it is less damaging to my hair and the condition of my hair has improved since using it. I also find it easier to style my hair. I don't spend my money on expensive blow dries so I feel I can justify the price as it enables me to give myself a better blow dry.
So would recommend if you can afford.

Just looked up the Dyson - it's so expensive! Would it be good for a complete novice or do you need to know what you're doing to get good results? I am clueless with hair and usually just blast it for a few minutes.

I've had my parlux for about 5 years and I still absolutely love it. It's so quick to use, and every time I stay away from home I'm reminded of how brilliant mine is.

I agree the Dyson is intriguing but I just can't imagine paying that much money for a hairdryer.

KoolKoala07 · 16/08/2017 00:26

I've just bought a Remington. Cost me £20 and it dries my hair wonderfully. I've got really thick long hair and I'm really chuffed with it.

NotAnotheChinHair · 16/08/2017 06:14

I've had a Parlux for about 18 years now and I'm sick of it but I have no excuse to replace it as it is still as good as the first day Grin. It dries my long wavy frizz prone hair in about 5 minutes and looks styled. When it packs up I'll be buying a Parlux again.

Also intrigued about the Dyson but the reviews always talk about how light and silent it is. That's not my main concern when buying a hairdryer. I want to know how well it styles hair and how quickly it can make it look good without burning it.

Timefortea99 · 16/08/2017 06:20

I bought a Dyson after a lot of debate and research. I decided to buy it directly from Dyson because you can return after a week's trial. It was not for me. Tried it every day for a week. Made my hair flat and lifeless. I tried every heat setting/attachment permutation. It was light (but not as light as I thought it would be) and the design is a thing of beauty. I returned it, which was a somewhat protracted experience but got £ back in the end.

I bought mine from one of the stands they have in shopping centres. I asked about their returns policy at the time and they were somewhat cagey but their website had the returns policy on it. I read some reviews that said that if you tried to return Dyson would try and talk you into having a hairstylist come to your house to show you how to use it instead. They did not offer that but I may have prevented that by saying that I did not need a further demo in the email seeking the refund.

So, my advice if you are thinking of getting a Dyson, check that the Dyson one week trial is still in place and buy from them. From memory you can return to John Lewis too if you buy from there - but only if it is unused.

I really wanted to like it. But it was not for me.

Nearlyadoctor · 16/08/2017 06:48

Another vote here for Diva 5200 professional - when my last one broke about 4 years ago I bought a GHD and then returned it, not a patch on the Diva. Diva is also about half the price.

MagentaRocks · 16/08/2017 07:02

I have a GHD air dryer and it is fab. My hair is nowhere near as frizzy now.

SaucyNoBrainer · 16/08/2017 07:11

I am a hairdresser and I can use pretty much anything - it depends on how you use it.

Spending a lot of money on something doesn't mean you will suddenly be gifted the ability to use a brush properly with the nozzle in the right direction etc.

To answer the question, I have a parlux, my colleagues use GHD which are heavier.

Crispsheets · 16/08/2017 07:14

I have had a Parlux for 10 years which is great but heavy.
I bought a Dyson six months ago ( in Boots on triple points day).....so much lighter. And fast. I can get my hair styles in ten minutes instead of half an hour.

f1sher · 16/08/2017 07:38

I've had my Parlux for a year and I love it. It's super fast and great at getting volume into your roots (normally, I can't be bothered to do a properly blow dry so just tip my head forward and blast my hair until dry - it takes less than 5 mins).

Parlux did use to be quite heavy, but I have the Advanced Powerlight which is their lightest model. Can't recommend enough!

Sammysquiz · 16/08/2017 08:13

I have a Parlux which I'm very pleased with, but my hairdresser used a Dyson hairdryer when he did my hair last week & I was very impressed. But, yes, very pricey!!

TyrionLannistersShadow · 16/08/2017 08:15

Parlux here too.

scrubthedeckandmakeitlookSHINY · 16/08/2017 08:44

I have a £20 Toni and Guy hairdryer I bought from Amazon. I have thick, unruly hair which needs a LOT of taming. My hairdryer does the job perfectly. It's quick, quiet and light. Couldn't ask for more.

YY to the wise poster upthread who said an expensive bit of kit doesn't guarantee results.

iveburntthetoast · 16/08/2017 10:09

I had a parlux, but it blew up (in spectacular fashion) after a couple of years. I have very thick and frizzy hair. It damaged my hair and too forever.

I switched to a Dyson and found it brilliant. It's cut drying time from an hour to 20 mins. And I don't need to straighten it as much.

Liiinoo · 16/08/2017 13:31

I bought a Dyson direct from Dyson because it had a 35 day trial period. I didn't find it significantly faster or quieter than my Parlux and I disliked the way it dried my hair. It was very soft, sleek and shiny (all good) but I couldn't get ny volume or movement into it. I have shoulder length layered hair and like to wear it bouncy and flicky and couldn't achieve that with the Dyson, so after a month of trying and practicing it went back and I got my Parlux out of the cupboard.

My 20 something daughter OTH loved the Dyson because she didn't need to use straighteners after drying with it, she liked the flat, sleek look. She was gutted that it's gone back.

LyndaLaHughes · 16/08/2017 15:30

The dyson is absolutely fantastic and worth every penny. Saves me so much time and my hair stays the way I want it!
