When did TOAST get so horribly expensive?

Looked at some things last week- everything seemed at least fifty quid more than I would have expected. I haven't bought anything for a few seasons because nothing suited me, and now it seems eye wateringly pricey for what it is. £170 for a really basic needlecord dress that will be worn out pretty quickly? £135 for a simple jumper...I used to buy a few bits every season but a few bits now would be six hundred quid or more. Think I need to make my own things!

I love Toast but you're right they do seem more expensive lately. I started making my own clothes last year mostly Toast inspired. Even if you buy really pricey fabric it's still cheaper!

Wellmeetontheledge · 12/08/2017 22:57

I clicked on this thinking you meant edible toast and was really surprised by the £50 comment!

wobblywonderwoman · 12/08/2017 23:00

wellme after a stressful enough day... You have really made my day Grin

Floisme · 12/08/2017 23:05

I can't remember a time when it wasn't eye watering. I usually stalk their things until the sales and then stalk them some more. I've just bought some wide leg crops after waiting 6 months for them to come down to half price and even then they were expensive. But I've never been disappointed. I have a knitted dress that hasn't bobbled after 10 years and T shirts that have kept their their shape after god knows how many washes.

It's the most consistently good quality brand I know. In fact I think it's the only brand where I can honestly say I've never had a single dud.

MaQueen · 12/08/2017 23:10

The owners of Toast are friends of friends of mine - their stuff has always been very expensive. But it's all fantastic quality. I have jersey tops from them that must be 10 years old and still look good.

LunaTheCat · 13/08/2017 05:02

I love Toast too and many of my favourite things are Toast. Live in New Zealand though and postage is very expensive, especially if you need to return. Sizing can be very variable too.
I am currently lusting after a no. of things on their website.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 13/08/2017 05:41

Do they still do their archive sales anymore? Those were bargainaceous. I used to get emails about them but none recently.

Cobblersandhogwash · 13/08/2017 06:16

Wellmee, you started making your own clothes? Just like that? How did you learn?

TealStar · 13/08/2017 06:22

I used to buy from them a lot ten years ago. It not so much now. Not only do I find them frightfully expensive but now I'm older (and rather ironically more in their age bracket) I won't wear it as it is frumpsville which I got away with in my early thirties but not so much now.

TealStar · 13/08/2017 06:23

Sorry for making little sense; it's early!

PollyPerky · 13/08/2017 07:55

It's always been hideously expensive and somewhat hideous.
Droopy, loose fitting, un-flattering apart from perhaps the knitwear which is far too expensive. I think of it as the emporer's new clothes in all honesty.

Surpriseeggsforbreakfast · 13/08/2017 08:42

I haven't bought much from Toast in the past few years although I used to get quite a lot on sale before. I'm petite and ended up returning a lot of it as its made for tall slim people, built completely differently! I also make my own clothes and noticed I could buy the same Ikat fabric they used last season to make a skirt for 1/5th of the price. Merchant and Mills have beautiful fabrics such as Indian block print cottons, organic twill etc and they sell Toast style sewing patterns too.

Floisme · 13/08/2017 11:24

Well you may think they're hideous and a lot of them are kind of androgynous - which is why I think they're interesting. But I wouldn't call them droopy. That's a word I'd reserve for the likes of Hush and Mint Velvet and, more recently Whistles - brands that try and fob you off with low end fabric at high end prices. What I like about Toast is that the fabrics have a bit of heft and keep their shape after repeated wearing and washing - as indeed they should at those prices.

cuirderussie · 13/08/2017 13:20

They are bonkers expensive but if you stalk their sales it's worth it. I never buy at full price but I love them. Their stuff really lasts and their dresses have POCKETS. Grin

Orangebird69 · 13/08/2017 13:27

Polly couldn't agree more! I've just looked at their dresses and tunics. Oh my days. Awful.

Orangebird69 · 13/08/2017 13:34

Seriously, £50???? Not suprised it's in the sale. £170 takes the piss Shock

Orangebird69 · 13/08/2017 13:34

Oops. Forgot to attach the pic in my state of shock.

When did TOAST get so horribly expensive?
cuirderussie · 13/08/2017 13:41

I just bought that in the sale Orangebird Grin

Orangebird69 · 13/08/2017 13:42

Oh. My condolences Grin

cuirderussie · 13/08/2017 13:46

It's actually quite nice! But not £170 nice.

Pestilentialone · 13/08/2017 13:54

Most clothes are made in sweat shops, hence they are cheap.
If you use decent fabric and pay workers a living wage, then clothes are expensive.
It took me fifteen years of hard wear to trash my first toast jumper (and even then it was DB's dog that did the real damage).

rightknockered · 13/08/2017 14:03

I have that dress, it looks good on me and I always get compliments when I wear it. I like it.
I have seen a lot of trash sold for prices similar to Toast prices, at least with Toast I know the fabric will be good, and that it will survive a few washes.

Themostannoyingperson · 13/08/2017 14:16

I have s very nice super warm wool dress from TOAST. But I don't get the thing about clothes lasting. I have a black jersey top from New Look that is worn weekly in winter if not more for nine years. I have clothes from the 80's that still look good - Just Seventten sweatshirt for one that I wear ironically.
Personally I think most clothes from TOAST look dull. Definitely emperors new clothes as someone said.

rightknockered · 13/08/2017 14:26

I quite like the plain androgynous look, never been into bling. There are many high street clothing companies that sell clothes that appeal to people who like a more glam look. I've bought more and more from Toast over the years, especially their denim. Thank fuck they don't sell those bloody slashed knee skinnies!

rightknockered · 13/08/2017 14:30

And so thankful for the fact they don't print logos on stuff. Sweatshirts with shit logos on? No thanks
