Winter coat for a toddler

Because autumn is coming [leaps about like the overexcited ginger, pasty, heat-hater that I am]

Last year ds had a little padded coat from Joules and a padded puddle suit, but he wasn't running about then. This year, I think we'll need to step things up a bit. He has waterproof trousers that he can carry on wearing and a thin waterproof which will be fine for warmer days and early autumn, but what coat could he have for really cold days? Are Didricksons really worth the money (we're on a budget) and do they last well enough to be worth getting second hand?

I'm hoping to carry on cycling through the winter with him so he needs to be nice and warm! And dry. We probably won't set out if it's lamping down, but there are always sneaky showers to catch you out.

I don't know what the kids Didriksons are like but mine has been fab. For the last two winters I've bought toddler DD coats from Gap - very very warm and shower proof (but eventually get soaking if it's chucking it down with rain - when v rainy I just put her waterproof puddle suit on over the top of her coat and left both unzipped a little, there is plenty of room)

Good to know, thanks. I hadn't thought of Gap, I'll have to have a look there too.

Polarn o pyret do brilliant coats. They have fleeces and waterproof jackets that are bought separately but can be zipped together so really flexible. We got DS both in the sale and they lasted 2 winters and were used on 2 ski trips.

Muddy Puddles do lovely little waterproof jackets with fleece linings.

I love the polarn coats. Fantastic. Very generously sized so might got 2 winters out of them (and at 4.5 are just out growing age 1.5-2 😂)

I haven't bothered with the fleece lining - normally I layer up underneath. That said I often have a puffa coat for mine as well. Gap and uniqlo do good ones. I find this covers all bases e.g. In spring and autumn it can be damp but warm. Ditto we holiday in Ireland so sometimes their raincoat is over the top of their wetsuits!

I love Toby Tiger coats (and most stuff they do). Ds has a fleece lined waterproof coat that is lovely and really generously sized.

For that age I would look on eBay. You can get great boden coats for a fraction of the full price.

You guys are so great Smile I bloody love this site sometimes. In the space of a week, I've had my storage issues sorted, a whole programme of rainy day activities provided and now my son's wardrobe issues too. Long live the viper hive mind!

My dcs have had the H&M ski jackets/ winter coats. Warm, waterproof, little mitten things in sleeves. They've lasted 2 winters every time and for ~£40 they're brilliant! They often have some nice patterns too which makes dcs easier to spot - v useful in school playground!
