DD wants one so I've started looking at offers thinking I will get her one for Xmas
Her hair is long, mid back
The curl secret is £79 just now but says not suitable for long hair
Others are over £100

The Curl Secret is great but I wouldn't use on hair longer than armpit length.

Look on ebay there are many returned Secret Curls at half the retail price. There is a reason for this.

  1. Will not hold a style on long hair
  2. Hair gets caught up and tangled very easily
  3. You can only put a small amount of hair in the curler so it can take along time to style.
  4. Can only create quite tight curls. If you want waves forget it.

Don't be fooled by the promotional videos that make it look so easy.
There are many products out there. Take your time and look on Youtube at the reviews on lot's of different products.

Agree with PP.

I have a curl secret that I used on one section of my hair, decided it was crap and now can't sell it for love nor money.

CatsRidingRollercoasters · 10/08/2017 19:26

My hair is naturally very wavy/quite curly but it still needs a lot of skill to look its best, otherwise it's just a frizzy bushy mess.

My routine is wash with head upside down - allow the pressure of the water to push all the hair forward into natural clumps.. Use praying hands to apply products, squishing them into the hair. Use a good gel or mousse.

Don't towel dry hair! Wrap it in a microfibre towel or even a long sleeved t shirt for 20 mins or so.

Then I diffuse it on cool, low speed. If it's crunchy from the gel, scrunch it upside down with praying hands when it's absolutely completely dry.

Tada! Mega curls.

I would buy her a very good quality diffuser attachment. There are lots of universal ones and you needn't spend a fortune. I like the Gama one which is under £15 Smile

She doesn't have any curl at all
Do you think she would be better with heated rollers?

I've got really straight hair and the only way I really get a curl is a wand. I have a couple - thin conical one for tight curls, big fat one for waves and loose curls. Never had any joy with heated rollers, rotating brushes etc.

vasseve1 · 10/08/2017 22:31

Heated rollers will only give you a few hours at best. Velcro rollers give better hold. Dry hair 100% put the velcros in (use setting spray before the rollers or after) leave in for a few hours or use a hair dryer to speed it up. There are many curling wands out there. If hair is naturally straight a combination of velcro and a curling wand give a good result. You can create lasting waves with a straightener but it takes a bit of practise.

I guess I must be an anamoly. Ive had a curl secret for years and I use it every few days and absolutely love it. I have very thick boob length hair and I can start my curls at around ear length. At the lowest heat/duration setting I get lovely soft bouncy curls and then big waves for 4-5 days. I've never ever my hair tangled in it and the whole thing only takes me 10 min or so now. The trick with long and thick hair is to section your hair properly and just do small sections 3-4 wide.

user1493202565 · 11/08/2017 01:01

Sorry i meant to write 3-4CM wide

MagdalenLaundry · 11/08/2017 08:54

A pp was right
eBay is full of them so I guess I could get a few different hair things for her to mess about with

My hair is very different to user but I also love the curl secret. I have very fine, but plentiful, shoulder-length hair. Because it's fine I can curl slightly larger sections at a time. My hair has never ever held a curl no matter what method I use but the CS makes soft ringlets which drop after about 15 mins into waves which last all day. My SIL borrowed it and got proper ringlets in her thick hair but this isn't the look I'm after.

I don't think it's right for OP's DD, though. Her long hair will tangle too easily. I'd go for a curling wand instead.
