Maxi dress to a wedding

TwoDogs9 · 09/08/2017 11:47

I am attending a wedding at the end of the month with DH and DS (seven months old). I am breastfeeding but have given up on finding anything suitable to feed in and we have a room booked so I'll just go to the room to feed as necessary. Since having baby I have lost a bit of body confidence and have also had psoriasis on my knees hence I'd like to wear a maxi dress. Are either of these suitable?? I love the Phase Eight one but I'm worried it's too eveningy??

Love the first dress but it is more dressy than the second. I went to a wedding last weekend and it was wall to wall maxi dresses on anyone under 35.

BubblesBuddy · 09/08/2017 12:02

My DD (25) goes to weddings and no-one wears maxi if the wedding is smart. She would never dream of it unless it was an evening do that specified it. I can see why you may want to, but a jump suit is way more stylish. Or midi. Loads of lovely dresses are midi.

TwoDogs9 · 09/08/2017 12:08

Are maxi dresses not the done thing if you're over 35 then?! 🙈 I'm 39!!

Bubbles I really don't like midi length dresses. I also want to wear flat shoes and midi or shorter really call for heels. Might research a jumpsuit, but feel it could be a bit casual??

Erm, my mum is 56 and wears maxi dresses all the time to weddings & she looks amazing!

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 09/08/2017 12:11

The Phase 8 one is gorgeous, the Monsoon one is mumsy (but then it's from Monsoon so situation normal there...)

I think the 'non-dressy' maxis are the spagetti strap flowy ones that are basically long sun-dresses, I agree they aren't very weddingy but the ones you've linked are more 'long dresses' to me. If that even makes sense.

hellybellyjellybean · 09/08/2017 12:12

Maxi dresses are perfectly acceptable at weddings!

Bluntness100 · 09/08/2017 12:13

The first dress is lovely, the second I really dislike. It is very eveningy and dressy though. Is it a formal wedding. I'd be worried you were over dressed.

LilaoftheGreenwood · 09/08/2017 12:13

The Phase Eight eveningyness isn't too bad, it's not covered in glitter. It could be toned down with a cream wrap/jacket and sharp patent cream handbag/clutch? Lovely dress and very reusable too. I don't see what's wrong with maxis for weddings, I don't really notice what length skirt people are wearing, only whether they look good and are wearing something basically occasion appropriate!

The Monsoon does look slightly easier to breastfeed in though if that is at all a factor.

SleepingStandingUp · 09/08/2017 12:14

First is lovely but very formal and might not be very forgiving on your post baby bits. Second is lovely and looks more comfortable

My DD (25) goes to weddings as a hobby? Job? Do you not go to weddings if your invited? Sorry phrasing just tickled me

mintich · 09/08/2017 12:42

There are some lovely jumpsuits in Coast at the moment

Well I have been to 3 weddings this summer.

All smart. Quite a few women looking very smart in maxi dresses.

What exactly does 'goes to weddings mean? Confused

BubblesBuddy · 09/08/2017 12:49

I just meant she was in a younger age group and has attended quite a few weddings recently where her age group did not wear long. Maxi is a bit of a class thing to be blunt. Do the Middletons wear maxi? Are there any photos of weddings in Tatler with maxi dresses being worn? Long formal dresses are for evenings. Evening wedding - fine. Jump suits are allowed in the Royal Enclosure at Ascot. They are now considered formal wear and great for weddings if they are well cut and a decent fabric.

To be blunt, what a load of tosh.

PNGirl · 09/08/2017 14:59

Well, as someone who looks like a plumber in a jumpsuit and doesn't care what a Middleton wears, much less an Ascot attendee, I think a maxi is fine.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 09/08/2017 15:09

The next time I get invited to a Middleton wedding I'll remember to wear a jumpsuit then. I mean, I'll look like I'm an extra from Ghostbusters, but at least I'll be classy.

OP I found you some nice outfits. Pippa M wore it so its ok!

I was at a wedding this weekend where the best friend of the bride was in a gorgeous maxi at the grand old age of 25. She looked stunning. You would look stunning in either dress. I prefer the second.

OllyBJolly · 09/08/2017 17:04

Been to six weddings this year. (very naice weddings at that- me and DH only riff raff present!!). There was a lot of maxi dresses, especially amongst the younger crew.

Haven't seen any jumpsuits. And wouldn't that mean totally undressing to breast feed?

I agree with Piglet.
