Make up inspiration

Hello. Well I'm at the stage of digging around in my makeup bag every morning and pulling out half a dozen basic bits, scattering pencil shavings and cotton buds in my path. My face is done (and I use the term loosely) in about 3 minutes. I think I'm using a maybelline foundation, an ancient no 7 loose powder, bourgeois pink blusher, a grey eye pencil, black mascara and a palette of neutral eye shadows.

I'm celebrating my 40th this month and thought I might buy some new bits. I was thinking of visiting one of the beauty counters but don't really want to end up with all of the basics from one range and pay over the odds.

So what I'm asking is what essentials should I go for? I'm happy to mix some pricy bits with bargains. Ideally I'd go to Dior but I'm probably limited to a couple of things, I feel like I need to start afresh!

My skin is in reasonable nick, but unloved. I'm not one for skincare beyond a facial wipe and moisturiser. If I'm feeling saintly I'll use a cleanser with cotton wool. Brown hair and eyes, slightly sallow complexion.

Please advise! Ooh I think I'll get some new makeup brushes too...

Hmm.

I'd say the makeup basics are:
Foundation
Loose powder
Eyebrow powder/pencil/gel etc
Mascara
Lipstick

In terms of Dior...

Dior do a good foundation called 'Dior Skin Forever Fluid' which is quite full coverage and lasts well.

Dior also do a good mascara called 'Dior Show'.

Aside from that I'm not a Dior connoisseur, however MAC do really good lipsticks with an excellent range of shades and colours and have good staying power.

Loose powder, in my experience, doesn't have to be very fancy. I find that my Rimmel and Collection one (each about £4) work as well as my higher end ones.

Eyebrow products: Anastasia Beverly Hills Dip Brow Pomade is really good, however you have to buy an eyebrow brush separately (doesn't have to be an ABH one though).

If you're wanting an eyeliner, Lancôme do one I like called 'Artliner' (liquid one).

NARS and Yves Saint Laurent both do good concealers.

I personally think that Urban Decay eyeshadows are great. The second palette has the more neutral colours. Staying power is great and pigmentation is good.

Benefit do great bronzers if you want to contour.

Blushers I think can be good in most places. I like the Bourjois ones and the Bare Mineral ones the most.

Having said all that, you may find everything at Dior (don't let them hassle you into buying things that you aren't interested in).

Good luck OP, a bit more than you may have asked for but have fun searching Smile

I wish I could buy everything in Dior! Sadly I doubt I'll even go. Those are good tips. Thank you :)
