What's with ripped jeans?

I'm sorry I just don't get it - why pay full price for damaged goods? Some of them are complete different shredded. Am I showing my age?

It's a fashion. I have succumbed even tho I am really too old and last time I wore ripped jeans was 1994 at university! But I've only gone for a rip on each knee, some of them are more hole than trouser!

nowaynoway · 06/08/2017 08:01

I have a pair of worn looking ones which are different for me 😂 I work in primark and the holes in some of them- they may as well be shorts with string hanging off!

I had a pair last summer but every time I bent my knees (a lot as I chase DS around soft play) they would rip even more until there was virtually nothing left. I don't understand how that doesn't happen to everyone that wears them!

Liberated71 · 06/08/2017 08:21

I'm probably old enough to be your mum Shock I wore ripped jeans in the 80s

I think jeans that have ripped through age - fine, I still have some somewhere. Pre-ripped jeans make me snarl which is silly cos they're only clothes but some things in life should be earned. Same goes for anything with the badges already sewn on. Just stop it.

dudsville · 06/08/2017 09:18

No one over 35 could be surprised by this trend.

imjessie · 06/08/2017 09:19

Yes you are showing your age , I'm 42 and still wear ripped jeans sometimes . It's a casual look ! I think completely straight jeans can be a bit frumpy , we are all different though .

hugoagogo · 06/08/2017 09:32

Just make sure you put sun cream on your knees.

Mayhemmumma · 06/08/2017 09:38

How does one bend/kneel in these things? Feeling youthful I bought a pair and within an hour the rips were less subtle peek of flesh and more whole flabby thigh on show.

mrsharrison · 06/08/2017 09:40

The punks started this in the mid 70s. It was a statement from working class kids protesting at the high cost of fashion. Oh the irony.

KingJoffreysRestingCuntface · 06/08/2017 09:40

I have ripped jeans.

It's because they're ancient and well worn and bloody comfy. I'm also a weird shape and jeans are hard to find.

I wouldn't buy a pair already like that though.

AmyOb · 06/08/2017 10:20

It sure looks hip but I totally see your point. Personally I would not buy them for my self but my DD loves them. So I have searched about their pros and cons before buying them every time.
You really need to watch yourself when buying these type of jeans. Remember that holes should never be more than an inch high when you're standing up and they should never be wider than the leg the jeans and look best when they're made horizontally across the leg. Simply just ask your self if these rips are actually possible to create in real life?
So make sure that you are not buying a pair or making a pair where everything is out of place.

CiderwithBuda · 06/08/2017 10:33

Glad it's not just me! I really don't get the ripped in th knees thing. They look completely ridiculous!

IHaveBrilloHair · 06/08/2017 10:34

I've got two pairs, I really like them.

ZaZathecat · 06/08/2017 10:36

I guess it's a way off showing off a nice pair of legs while still being casual and comfy in jeans instead of dolled up in a mini skirt. (I don't wear them though as I am a crepey).

BadToTheBone · 06/08/2017 10:44

I've seen them come round a few times now.
If you wore them in the 80's, how are you shocked others want to wear them now?

TheHiphopopotamus · 06/08/2017 11:02

DS13 won't wear anything else, but he thinks he's Nirvana's fourth member. I think the nineties are having a revival at the minute.

Paying for something that has 45% of it missing does grate a bit though, I'll admit.

Liberated71 · 06/08/2017 11:47

As others have said - mine were ripped by age/wear - I didn't pay money for someone else to rip them.
I can see they look good on some people but some are really expensive designer names. Maybe they were ripped personally by the designer's fair hands!!!

It's good in the summer, get a breeze around in those holes Grin

I admit I don't ever pay full price though, I bought a pair of second hand jeans on eBay and ripped them myself Wink

specialsubject · 06/08/2017 16:18

They do look funny, dont they?

The emperor would look better naked than in rags.

christmasunicorn · 06/08/2017 18:24

I like them. I don't own any as I'm too uncool for that sorta stuff but I think they look pretty cool

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 06/08/2017 18:27

I hate them. Yet I'm sat wearing a pair now. Why you ask?
Because I could not find a single pair of jeans that were not skin tight or boot cut without rips. Is a pair of boyfriend/girlfriend/mom whatever they're blood called jeans without rips or bloody embroidery too much to ask?
