Why does my fake tan rub off on my bedsheets or does this happen to everyone

Whether I use the Garnier one or the St Moriz and apply a few hours before bed - when I get up the tan is all over the bedsheets and pillow. Is this normal and happens to everyone? Is it also just me but when I get in the shower the whole tan seems to go down the plug hole!

Are you moisturising before tanning? If so it will create a greasy barrier that prevents the fake tan from sinking in properly. Instead it just sits on top of the moisturiser.

Mollypolly2610 · 05/08/2017 22:14

No I don't moisturise before. Can't think why it rubs off like this. I wanted to put it on tonight but I've just put white sheets and pillowcases on the bed!

It happens to me, looks like I poured tea,all over the sheets, I wonder if it is to do with sweating? Humans lose a few pints every night I think.

BetsyTheBee · 05/08/2017 22:17

Is it the guide colour that comes off or the actual tan? You might need to change brands if it's the actual tan. Annoyingly not all brands suit all skin types, I use Rimmel sun shimmer mousse and I've never had a problem with transferring onto my bedsheets and I apply a few hours before bed too.

HairsprayQueen · 05/08/2017 22:19

I've never used fake tan so obviously I'm not an expert, but I have seen that some beauty sites (ie. like feel unique types) have been selling special tan onesies for going to bed after a tan.

So I suppose that implies that it is a common thing and not just you!

mrsharrison · 05/08/2017 23:43

That st Morita is awful for getting on bed sheets. The more expensive products don't do this.

namechange20050 · 05/08/2017 23:46

It's the guide colour, not the tan. That's what you can see washing down the plug. You should then be left with a natural looking colour underneath.

ClearEyesFullHearts · 05/08/2017 23:52

Yes, what nanechange says, I agree with.

I get my tanning (erm, once) done at a salon and they're very clear:

Don't bathe or sweat or wipe anything for 8 hours after the treatment; you will be darker at first but first shower/bath will wash away the colour to reveal what should be a natural loooking tan.

SuperBeagle · 06/08/2017 00:02

I always tan in the morning, not at night, to avoid this issue (also I hate the feeling of sleeping in tan). I do it in the morning, leave it for 6-8 hours, wash it off and then moisturise. Have white sheets on my bed and never have any marks on them.

PaperdollCartoon · 06/08/2017 00:04

This is why I use a shower off gradual tanner now. Much more natural looking, none of this crap.

TheBusThatCouldntSlowDown · 06/08/2017 00:15

You can buy a special silk sleeping bag thing to sleep in after tanning to protect your sheets. It looks very 'Sleeping Beauty'

Mollypolly2610 · 06/08/2017 01:17

Thanks will try the mornings now and where can I find this wondrous silk sleeping bag!! I also sweat like a pig through the night due to my age but glad it's not only me. With both brands after I have showered I am white again!

Aha! I found the tanning sleeping bag it's called Tanzee though you can actually buy silk sleeping bags for about a tenner from Amazon.

Have you tried Bondi Sands Molly ? That tan never comes off on bedsheets (unless you put it on at night, sleep in it, then wash off the guide colour in the morning). Sometimes you can get it discounted from Superdrug so it's no dearer than Garnier and it's the best tan I've tried.

Gingernaut · 06/08/2017 14:07

Fake tan rubs off onto everything.

As a 'good deed', I cleaned the desk, screen, mouse and keyboard of someone who'd been having a rough time and was coming back from leave.

Her fake tan came off the mouse, desk, mouse mat, wrist mat and keyboard.

The cleaning wipes came up bronzed!

PeachMelba78 · 06/08/2017 21:16

I use St Moritz and St Tropez. I always wear a onesie and I always make sure I am dry before putting it on. I don't think it's the price of the tan, just how it reacts to your skin. HTH

Liiinoo · 07/08/2017 15:57

I sometimes use Vita Liberata 10 minute tan. It works very quickly so I can put it in the evening and shower off the guide colour 1/2/ hours later before going to bed.

Hunter007 · 07/08/2017 20:22

St Tropez gradual is the best one - it never stains the sheets!

Bluntness100 · 07/08/2017 20:25

I use st tropez, but not the gradual one as I find applying it daily a pain in the backside. I do it once a week, let it dry thoroughly before bed and then it's fine. If I do occassionally get colour on sheets it's very minimal and from my chest where I've sweated. I also have white bed linen.

Oh and when it washes off me it leaves a tan behind.

Mollypolly2610 · 07/08/2017 22:46

Bluntness - which st tropez do you use as I would rather apply at night and shower off in the morning
