I need retinol, don't I? Please help

I'm 41 and have good skin (mainly genetic). It's on the dry side and can be sensitive. I do my best with SPF and have never been a sun worshipper but I can see a lot of old sun damage appearing, and I live in a sunny part of the country and am getting a lot more sun exposure now than in the past.

I'm not wrinkly but do have 11s and some crows' feet/laughter lines which seem to be increasing by the day. They are not too noticeable when my face is still but when I smile they seem to go almost to my ears.

I want to take anti-ageing action now, before things progress. I'm not against trying Botox and will probably have it in the 11s at some point but I'm keen to try other things first, especially as I would like to tackle the emergence of faint fine lines in various areas, and perhaps new freckles/sun damage if possible.

I have always taken care of my skin and I use a less-is-more approach. I don't have a lot of money to spend. I'm interested in the Ordinary products or something in that sort of price range. I am very sensitive to alcohol and anything with lots of fragrance.

Please, crepey ones, give me some advice and suggestions so I can start thinking about how to hold back the tide of wrinkles and liver spots!

They are different things pearl.
One is a retinol the other is a retinoid.

pearlkent · 06/08/2017 14:29

Thanks Chardonnay, but could you elaborate more please? Retinol vs retinoid? I'm trying to get to grips with all this retinol/retinoid/trentinoin etc but the more I read the more confused I get. I know (think?) they are all vitamin A, but then I get a bit lost. And then there are the percentages...

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 06/08/2017 14:34

Sorry, retinoids are gentler to the skin so you can use a higher percentage more easily.
They are all firm of vitA and do the same job.

TurnipCake · 06/08/2017 15:00

Retinol is a Vitamin A derivative, and the collective name being retionids e.g. (other forms include isotretinoin aka Accutane and retinyl palmitate)

Here is a great write-up

Jermajesty · 06/08/2017 15:07

@Timmytoo - your skin looks great! I'm a novice. What's the difference between the ceramide capsules & cream?

PearlyPinkNails · 06/08/2017 15:09

Where do you buy retinol 1% cream?

TurnipCake · 06/08/2017 15:12

@PearlyPinkNails I used to use Paula's Choice 1% (had to build up use very slowly), I've recently switched to Medik8 10TR serum

TurnipCake · 06/08/2017 15:13

Sorry, posted before I finished, got them both online via their own websites

justkeeponsmiling · 06/08/2017 15:13

Some great advice here! Can anyone tell me if retinol is ok to use with skin suffering from mild rosacea please?

Onthehighseas · 06/08/2017 15:14

I use Hylamide Subq also made by Deciem and have been really impressed. Its got a retinoid in it but also a host of other good things. Definitely worth a try.

justkeeponsmiling · 06/08/2017 15:24

Sorry Beautifullymixed I just saw that you recommended speciffic products that worked for your rosacea, thanks for that!

Fosterdog123 · 06/08/2017 16:09

When I said the forehead, I meant 11s aswell.

Timmytoo · 06/08/2017 18:23

Jermajesty - the ceramide is an intense serum meant to be used before moisturizer.

I wanted to get Botox originally but the surgeon whom I know on a personal level, told me to wait as long as possible, as Botox can cause additional wrinkling due to paralyzing the muscles, they don't work out as such so they end up sagging. Also once the Botox starts it needs to carry on probably due to the reason above.

NiteFlights · 06/08/2017 20:09

Onthehighseas - sorry, when I said I'd tried Hylamide, I meant Hyarulon (sp). It was too siliconey and didn't do anything.

I've ordered the Ordinary retinoid 2% and the hyaluronic acid. Will be interesting to try them! It would be nice to put off Botox for as long as possible.

Fosterdog123 I see. No, I don't think anything I can do myself is going to sort out the 11s really.

Beautifullymixed · 06/08/2017 22:04

justkeeponsmiling , I absolutely love the Ordinary's 2% retinoid for my rosacea. The redness and roughness seems to subside overnight. It also seems to keep the dreaded papules away.
I also love nip + fab glycolic pads as well. I use them after cleansing, and before my hyaluronic serum (my beloved Hada labo premium).
My rosacea have never been so good!

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 06/08/2017 22:13

OP I bought the LaGoodwind gadget and it makes a MASSIVE difference to your skin. You don't have to use expensive creams or anything - just your ordinary face creams!! I got mine off Amazon and even my hopeless DH says he sees a huge change in my skin. I bought the one with 9 reviews but have a look and see!!

LastGirlOnTheLeft · 06/08/2017 22:14

OK so that sounded like such a promotion!! 😳😳I promise I'm not!!

BagelGoesWalking · 06/08/2017 22:17

Pearl the Ordinary 1% is much, much stronger than the 2% and shouldn't be used unless your skin is already used to acids. Here's a good guidee*

Jermajesty · 06/08/2017 23:16

Thank you @Timmytoo

justkeeponsmiling · 06/08/2017 23:35

@Beautifullymixed thank you, I have just ordered both the Ordinary Retinoid 2% and the Hada Labo Premium Smile
So you cleanse, then use glycolic pads, then hyaluronic serum? At what stage do you use the Retinoid?

justkeeponsmiling · 06/08/2017 23:38

Beautifully this is the Hadalabo serum I ordered, is this the one you were talking about

I need retinol, don't I? Please help
NiteFlights · 07/08/2017 11:40

Thanks LastGirlOnTheLeft - I'll think about it, but I may be too lazy to actually use something like that! Never got into Clarisonic etc - the only gadgets I use are bikini trimmer and Micropedi!
