Poor you, what's happened,is it damaged from straighteners? Have you seen a hairdresser for advice?

Coconut oil is fantastic, slather it on and sleep on a towel over night and rinse off in the morning, put shampoo on first before wetting .

maudeismyfavouritepony · 04/08/2017 23:50

Coconut oil is great on hair before you wash it, leave in as long as you can

Do you know why your hair is so dry/ lacking in volume?

Sorry you are feeling rubbish, will think some more !

Clarabumps · 05/08/2017 00:01

If it's that wrecked then the only thing that will solve it is cutting it off. I bleached my hair and it snapped then I used every conditioning thing under the sun. Nothing worked. So I cut it. How wrecked is it?

CrystalMethHog · 05/08/2017 00:04

I've been using Toni and guy shampoo and conditioner since April and I've noticed a massive change in the condition of my hair. Used to be so knotty and straw like and now it feels so smooth and glossy. Quite expensive but I get mine for £3 in savers. I swear by the stuff Grin

Trustmeimadoggroomer17 · 05/08/2017 00:04

It used soon long then me and my silly dunked Friend decided to give me a victoria Beckham bob. It's never been the same ive tried to make it look nice, bleach, extentions. It actually looked healthier blonde and longer. Then I dyed it back to a darker brown because I couldn't afford to keep going back and it's worse it's all brittle so dry and flat it's stuck to my head. I want to go back blonde again and I'm trying to get it healthier but it's getting worse no matter what I use :(

Yes I have knackered my hair badly previously. Earlier in the year it was snapping off. I cut it into a chin length bob and used a leave in conditioner every time I washed it, as well as conditioner following shampoo. The leave in conditioner I used is called 'it's a 10.' Got it in the US but I'm in need of some more, so hoping I can get it on Amazon. It's really rescued my hair. It was over bleached and over straightened.

maudeismyfavouritepony · 05/08/2017 00:05

I use this for volume:

www.amazon.co.uk/d/Hair-Styling-Appliances/John-Frieda-Luxurious-Styling-Spray/B00C1ERUU6/ref=sr_1_3_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1501887148&sr=8-3&keywords=volume+spray&tag=mumsnetforum-21

I blow dry upside down, (or dry natural if not going out) use a brush to curl ends, and use Elnett hairspray - its the best, don't waste your money on anything else.

My hair is dry and fragile, looks pretty good with this regime.

BagelGoesWalking · 05/08/2017 00:28

Try Squalene oil from the Ordinary. Ppl have said that they've seen good results by rubbing in a few drops and leaving overnight. Also, rubbing in a few drops of the Hyaluronic Acid helps to hydrate the hair. Worth a try!

Loveache · 05/08/2017 00:32

Castor oil hair masks are amazing to help with regrowth and conditioning.

LilyMcClellan · 05/08/2017 00:46

Olaplex is the only thing that will actually fix damaged hair. Worth the investment.

EnidButton · 05/08/2017 01:22

You could try using a clarifying/detox shampoo once a week in case you have some build up from the hair dye and the products you've been trying, Redken do one called Cleansing Cream or Toni and Guy Detox texture shampoo or I'm using Lush Big shampoo at the moment.

They can be quite stripping (especially the Lush one) so you'll need to alternate with a moisturising shampoo and a really moisturising conditioner afterwards. (For conditioners I like Redken All soft, Aussie 3min miracle and Garnier Ultimate Blends- the orange Argan oil one. The ultimate Blends honey shampoo is a good moisturising one. Although my hair isn't really damaged, I get dry ends, so you might find others that work better for you.)

Philip Kingsley Elasticizer is excellent. It's quite expensive but you get a few uses from the smaller tube if you want to try it out. Still ££ but not as much.

Avoid ever using a brush. Use a wide toothed comb instead. Microfibre turbans are brilliant for getting your hair two thirds dry before you blow dry, so you can reduce the amount of heat you use. Avoid straighteners etc if you can.

Eat plenty of protein rich foods, fish, chicken, avocados, nuts and seeds. Think about adding a zinc supplement to your diet as well as an omega 3. If it's something that's happened fairly quickly, perhaps a check for vitamin deficiencies at the GP might be helpful? Iron levels and vitamin D3 can affect hair, skin and nails. As can hormonal changes.

Whew that was long. Hopefully there's something in there you might find useful anyway. Good luck. I'm very certain you can get your hair back to a state you're happy. Flowers

*you're happy with.

Another vote for Olaplex - Google it

When the cuticle of a hair gets damaged, the hair becomes dry and loses its shine and luster. Other signs of damaged hair include brittle or harsh texture, split ends, breakage, itchy scalp and no elasticity. Also, damaged hair gets tangled easily and can be difficult to manage and style. You can also try some natural, safe and effective home remedies to help repair your dull and lifeless hair. However, damaged hair cannot be repaired just in a day or a week. It will take time and patience to get the desired result.

  1. Applying Olive oil is very good for damaged hair.
  2. Massage 1 whisked egg on your scalp and hair for a few minutes. Cover with a shower cap and leave it on for 20 minutes. Then, rinse with cool water and shampoo as usual. Having some Vitamin E tabs will also help.
lurkingfromhome · 05/08/2017 08:46

Olaplex, really good conditioner (I use a brand called 72 or sometimes Redken plus PK's Elasticizer), and, I'm afraid, getting your hair cut. I've been getting a good few inches off each time just to get rid of more of the damage. Will grow it again afterwards. But Olaplex especially really does help.

oldmanfromscene24 · 07/08/2017 12:57

Watched this to come back and give advice. You need to make sure there is protein in your hair 'diet'. Oils are also good (coconut, Argan). Two summers ago my hair was fucked, so I did this:

  1. Heavy trim
  2. Protein hair mask (the lee Stafford one in the round tub for 'hair that doesn't grow past a certain length' is brilliant)
  3. Week 1 - protein condition quickly before every shampoo, then a nourishing conditioner afterwards (I like the mark hill Argan oil one, also mark hill Argan oil shampoo too)
  4. Week 2 onwards - moisturising hair mask once a week (I tend to alternate mark hill and coconut oil, and on a different day a protein hair mask.
  5. Regular trims.
  6. Small amount of Argan oil / blow dry creme before blow drying. I keep some dry shampoo to hand in case I'm looking a bit limp or greasy.
  7. Try to cut down on washing / blow drying / stop straightening if you can, or if you can't, use on the lowest heat.

I have also recently discovered the most amaaaaaaaxing hair mask. It's expensive, but it's the best thing EVER. It's called khair peptide hair mask. It's about 50quid (I know!!!) for a bigger size tub, but it also comes in a smaller tube for about £17 to try it first. It's a game changer!

My hair has/does go through some abuse! I admitt I probably over-colour it, I'm really terrible at trying to be kind to my hair. Yes it's dry on the ends but overall, doesn't look too bad. When it was really dry, I used any shampoo for coloured hair - herbal essences was a favourite, followed by Aussie Miracle 3minute Conditioner after every wash. That seemed to help mine. At the moment, because I'm trying to wash up a colour I put on that went a bit too dark for me, I'm using Tresemme cleanse & replenish shampoo & the same conditioner, which is quite moisturising.

The one thing I use religiously before blow drying though, is the Boots Style Works Heat protection serum (about £2.50) rub a couple of drops between fingers (depending on hair length) & run down the last few inches of your hair, especially on ends of hair, where it's dry or split. It's quite a thick serum so use a little to begin with. You can also use it on dry hair to tame frizziness - it's fab stuff & makes my hair look healthy - hence why I said my hair doesn't look too bad!!

When I do straighten my hair, I also use the Boots style Works heat protection spray which is really good too.

And lastly, even the slightest trim can make a difference, I'm trying to grow my hair back long 😫 but I know when it needs a trim & usually end up having half an inch off every few months to tidy it up!

Avoid using colour removers - they really trashed my hair. Another vote for coconut oil - I use it overnight at least once a week and my hair is in so much better condition.
