As in to help clear them

Currently not on any birth control but was thinking of going back on the pill so was just wonder what people was on that helped clear / keep spots at bay!

I had success with both 'dianette' and 'Yasmin' although I found dianette had the edge. I found all my gps insisted I cycle between the two as dianette has an increased blood clot risk I believe so they wouldn't stick me on it long term (6 months at a time followed by a swap to Yasmin).

Sadly I can't currently take either as I'm breastfeeding Sad

Yasmin is amazing- cleared DD's spots miraculously

Eleventybillionfucks · 04/08/2017 22:05

Im looking at going back on the pill soon i don't think I've had Yasmin or Dianette but every other brand ive had has made me so ill that sex was out of the question anyway and they made my acne worse

Looby4 · 04/08/2017 22:05

Ps Yasmin was recommended by a gynaecologist for this purpose

mintbiscuit · 04/08/2017 22:07

Dianette and yasmin have androgen blockers in them. Androgens cause increased oil production which causes acne.

Have only tried above which have worked for me but if acne is bad I have read that spironolactone is a good androgen blocker. But you would need a derm to prescribe.

Differin is topical solution which might help if acne not too severe?

Fairylea · 04/08/2017 22:12

I have had success with both Yasmin and Dianette- however- please be aware that these pills and other similar types have a higher risk of blood clots than progesterone only pills (mini pills such as cezarette). The risk is small but worth researching before deciding to take them. I took Dianette and then Yasmin from age 14 - am now 37 and switched to Cezarette a year ago because I'd discovered the blood clot risk and it scared me. With cezarette the risk is no higher than if you didn't take it (ie the average normal risk factor for an average person ).

I wouldn't call my spots severe but literally every single cycle I get about 4-5 spots, a couple really big ones and some that come up under the skin but don't fully break out and just look horrible and red for a couple of weeks.

Thanks everyone, I will ask for one of the 2 above.

I have bought zinc supplements and it has improved abit and I no longer get big spots but I'm still so fed up of getting 4-5 little ones come up!

Dianette was amazing for me. I suffered with terrible acne throughout my teen and right up until I started taking Dianette in my late 20's. Unfortunately it's not good long term and the doc took me off it now I'm 35. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Justdontknow4321 · 04/08/2017 22:17

The last time I took the pill was nearly two years ago (no kids invetween) but they always give me one we're you have a 7 day break .. mini pill I think .. as a couple Iv been on before gave me nausa and sickness ... as in waking up at 3 am to be sick if I took it before bed several times in a cycle

Dianette was literally a life changer for me.

OlennasWimple · 04/08/2017 22:21

Dianette was wonderful for me, but doctors are very reluctant to prescribe it nowadays. I found Yasmin not nearly as effective at clearing my skin, and also made me light headed and nauseous

If you can find a doctor to prescribe it, I can recommend spironolactone, which made a dramatic difference to my skin literally after a couple of days. It has side-effects too, so not for everyone, but worth exploring if you have a sympathetic doctor

Fairylea · 04/08/2017 22:22

The mini pill you take continuously - no break. The combined pill - Dianette and Yasmin etc - are the ones where you have a 7 day break. Mini pill is safer. But you have to weigh up the risks and benefits like anything else.

Bombardier25966 · 04/08/2017 22:53

Mini pill is safer.

It has a low risk of clots, but it has a significantly higher risk of ectopic pregnancy. To describe it as safer is not entirely correct.

Fairylea · 04/08/2017 23:08

Sorry yes I was referring to the risk of blood clots. Dianette was banned in France and Canada for being particularly high risk in terms of blood clots (I'm not sure if that's still the case).

Justdontknow4321 · 05/08/2017 08:27

Thanks everyone! I'm going to make a doctors app and try and get either of 2 above

Yaz.

Wouldn't go with Diane due to its history with regards to blood clots, and Yasmin doesn't contain the same specific hormone that's known for clearing up skin (cannot recall the name off the top of my head), whereas Yaz does.

AdalindSchade · 05/08/2017 08:40

Differin is topical solution which might help if acne not too severe?

I was prescribed this and used it for 4 months during which time the spots got bigger, spread over a bigger area of my face and my skin flaked and peeled like face dandruff. Avoid like the plague which is will look like you have

Hunter007 · 07/08/2017 20:27

Yasmin kept my skin clear for years. It is a slightly higher rate of blog clots but its still a tiny chance. The chance of a blood clot is still way less than actually being pregnant!

Paintbox · 07/08/2017 22:26

DO gps even prescribe dianette
Now? I was on it for years (years ago) but my doctor took me off it
And told me that they weren't allowed to prescribe
It an an acne treatment anymore due to the blood clot issue

Judydreamsofhorses · 07/08/2017 22:48

Diannette made me absolutely suicidal - I didn't connect the two things until my pill review, which was fortunately after three months, but the GP said depression can be a side-effect. It didn't really do much for my skin, which was pretty horrible at the time, although it did stop it being quite so oily. (I was on various other pills for contraception and found I didn't tolerate any of them brilliantly, but that was the worst.)

Judydreamsofhorses · 07/08/2017 22:51

Oh, and this might sound daft, but the best thing I found for spots was actually neat lavender oil on the recommendation of a beauty therapist. I no longer have proper acne, thank god, but always get pre-period spots and that sorts them right out. Also good for helping you relax/sleep!
