My hair is snapping! What do I need?

I bleached my hair a lot last year after years of dying it red (I know, I know!). It's now back to my natural colour but I have a lot of breakage. I have had a protein treatment which helped somewhat.

I use Aveda shampoo and conditioner but I need a treatment and a heat protector. I've heard the Kerasrase protector cream is good, has anyone used it?

I'm open to all suggestions, please help!

Philip Kingsley Elasticizer

Whisky2014 · 03/08/2017 21:48

Once a hair is damaged it cannot be repaired. You could spend £££ to improve the appearance but it doesn't improve the condition. Get regular trims, stop colouring it, don't blow dry it too often either.

Although I'm sure some style and beauty expert will come along with a product you are looking for.

stoplickingthetelly · 03/08/2017 21:49

I've been using the Redken Extreme shampoo and conditioner. It's really helped my hair.

BifsWif · 03/08/2017 21:53

Thanks all.

Whiskey I'm getting regular trims (4 weekly) and I'm trying to stop heat styling. I'm just hoping to prevent further damage and invest in a good protectant for when I do have to use heat Smile

The Kerastase Resistance range will help, particularly Ciment Thermique. That and Olaplex no.3 are making my poor, broken hair look and feel much better.

QuiteLikely5 · 03/08/2017 21:56

Trimming 4 X a week! I'm surprised you have any hair left!

BifsWif · 03/08/2017 21:58

Haha no, every 4 weeks! I have been tempted to just shave it all off!

I'm tempted to shave mine off too but I won't suit it.

Yeh guess heat protector is not such a bad idea.

Sciurus83 · 03/08/2017 22:18

Olaplex is the only thing that can help repair your hair, 1 in salon and 3 at home to top up in between. I use that once a week ish with aveda damage remedy daily hair repair every time I wash. No SLS shampoos, currently using the L'Oréal extraordinary oil low shampoo which is great. Leave in conditioner in between washes on the end, currently a Lee Stafford coconut one which is nice. That keeps my bleached hair in ok condition, I really need the ends trimming though the shameBlush

Sciurus83 · 03/08/2017 22:19

And absolute minimum on heat styling, really only when necessary and I can't turn up at a work meeting with wet hair!

Beadieeye · 03/08/2017 22:37

Definitely Philip Kingsley elasticizer
And Olaplex no. 3

Girlywurly · 04/08/2017 08:01

Olaplexing at home (steps 1 & 2) every month has helped my hair greatly.

clickhappy · 04/08/2017 08:04

Olaplex. Religiously.

BifsWif · 04/08/2017 09:30

Thanks all, I've just ordered Olaplex! I've been using the matrix version, Bond Ultim8 but everything online says Olaplex is the original and best.

My Aveda salon also recommended daily scalp massages (I use the invati stuff) which helped alot. Or I have seen overnight oil masks suggested. Good luck!

itsbetterthanabox · 04/08/2017 10:30

You need more moisture if it's brittle. You may be over proteining. How much protein are you using?
Moisture masks will help a lot more plus oiling after.
Olaplex is magic stuff. Get the treatment done in salon.

picklemepopcorn · 04/08/2017 10:38

Either more protein or more moisture, possibly both it's about the balance. Gelatine or egg helps with protein, flax gel or oats are good for moisture. I like using kitchen products, because I have a better idea what my hair is reacting to. If you did a moisturising treatment like oats or flax to start, then a protein one, you would see if the protein makes it better or worse.

I have bleach highlights and hair went like crunchy candyfloss.

Here's what worked for me - took about a month to restore hair to something approaching softness and shine.

ii) use Macadamia oil masque - put on shower cap to heat activate or relax in the bath. Sometimes I leave on overnight;

ii) add oil to dry hair;

iii) Olaplex 3 (pre-wash);

iv) used Philip Kingsley Elasticiser - a pre wash treatment. Not sure I liked it. Made my hair very tangled when I applied it and all stretchy / gummy;

v) wash less frequently;

vi) alternate washing with shampoo with 'washing' just with conditioner.

Additionally, ease up on the straighteners - go for a Brazilian keratin blow dry instead.

And continue with your regular trimes
