Antibiotics for spots experiences

Been taking them for a few weeks. They're helping a bit but I don't really want to be taking them for months as doctor suggested. What are people's experiences please? Do the spots just come back again when stopping tablets?

I had doxycycline on a low dose for about 6 months I think. Worked wonders. I had cystic acne and hormonal spots on my jaw and cheeks. Wouldn't hesitate to ask to go back on it if I needed to.

I'm 35 and was Dianette (co-Cyprindol) for years and doc took me off them (I'd been on far too long and it's risky now) 4 months ago.
I was terrified of the huge spots coming back (face, neck and ugh... back!) and was reluctant to take the antibiotics instead. Turns out they actually worked. For a bit. It's almost 2 months since I finished them but my face is starting to break out a bit. I'm desperately hoping it's because I'm due on any day now but it is disheartening to see the bastards back after years and years being completely spot free.
Take the antibiotics and if they work, great. If not, no real harm done and you can tick one off your list.

Please don't take medical advice from the internet. Roaccutane is not a steroid, for example. It has some potentially severe side effects and is not a wonder drug.
If you have questions about the antibiotic prescription please go back to your gp to discuss it.
I say this as a GP who has (reluctantly) taken roaccutabe myself. It didn't work, but that is another story!
In my area we aren't allowed to refer a patient to dermatology for acne treatment unless they've tried at least two full courses of antibiotics as well as some other bits. That varies from place to place but please don't set your heart on a dermatology referral based on this thread. The most important thing is to persist - unfortunately there are no quick fixes for acne. Good luck!!

I was put on anti-biotics for 6 months - limecycline - after 2 months it kicked in and had flawless skin.

I never used to get the regular small spots but just nasty under the skin ones almost always on the chin, deep in the layers of the skin. Yuck yuck.

However, after completed the course eventually they came back and I still get them now. I know Roaccuatne is quite full on so always been unsure about whether it was a nut with a sledgehammer kind of thing.

PS I took Dianette for years, didn't notice it made any difference compared to other pills. I got moved off it eventually as they don't like keeping you on it.

Another one who had Dalicin T, I used it for about 6 months and then I was cured, only an occasional normal pimple after that, not great big acne spots.

showergel1 · 03/08/2017 21:11

I used the roll on but didn't like it.
Have just started a course if antibiotics and my skin is noticeably different, the texture of my skin has changed as well as fewer, less angry spots. It's only been three weeks so too early to tell plus they are hormonal so do flare up and down.

My friend cured her skin by giving up dairy and gluten but i love food more than i hate my face. (most of the time)

Ohyesiam · 03/08/2017 21:11

I always come on and threads to say this, but go to Chinese herbalist, it works miracles. Pizza face to normal in a few weeks.

Roaccutane is for severe acne. It is consultant prescribed because it's effects on your liver need to be monitor and you must not get pregnant on it. I worked in dermatology and it saved a lot young people who had very severe acne and it was really affecting them socially and awful if you are a teenager. I do think there are better options than taking oral antibiotics before roaccutane would be considered. I think I was assuming you had severe acne. Sorry. There are a lot of helpful suggestions on here that are worth considering but still think you are better off getting a referral to dermatology. I hope you do not feel bamboozled ! I guess that's the problem with forums. Good luck.

Where can I buy benzyl peroxide. I used to use Benzac but it's not available here and this sounds like the same thing.

I had a 6 month course of antibiotics (erythromycin) for the acne in my back.

I have to say it cleared it about 98% and I only get the odd flare up now and again - a flare up would be about 4/5 cystic spots on my back and a few regular spots on my shoulders. Previously my entire back and shoulders whete constantly covered in a mix normal and cystic spots.

After about 10 years of acne and trying everything I could possibly think of, antibiotics were the only thing that worked for me. When I say everything I'm talking all sorts of OTC creams and lotions (including the strange one that bleached all my bedding and pjs). I tried diet changes- I cut out dairy, I cut out sugar, I cut out sweeteners, I tried a vegan diet for a while and done the low carb thing. I looked at the possibility of products I used on my skin so I changed body washes/ hair products/ washing powders. Basically every feasible solution (without going to see a DR) I read on the internet I tried and it didn't work. Dr was the last resort for me as I was sure going on the pill again would be the only solution they offered - I really didn't want that.

I would say keep up with the probiotics when you are on the treatment to prevent gut issues etc. I took a daily supplement tablet as well as yoghurt drinks.

I think you need to do an antibiotic course before they consider giving you things like roaccutane anyway - at least that's the case where I live anyway.

@ThanksForAllTheFish omg your post has just reminded me about Duac daily cream I used for a while. It ruined my best bed sets! I was heartbroken. They were my fancy expensive ones, so expensive that I still have them now. Beautiful purple floral duvet cover, pillows and matching valance, all with huge areas bleached white. They look like crap but I refuse to bin them Blush

Duac cream should have had a bigger warning label. Like maybe the entire side in bold, red capitals.

I was diagnosed with adult acne 3 1/2 years ago. I hadn't changed my pill recently or had acne in the past.
I went to my GP and she gave me Dalacin T. It started working within a few days - I couldn't believe how good it was! I used it for about a year before I thought I'd come off it and see what happened. I do still get the odd deep spot every couple of months but I definitely don't have acne.
I'm not saying this will be right for you. Just my experience. You should go to your GP as I'm sure they will be able to recommend something.
