Just that really! Going in the new year but doubt we'll become regular skiers so don't want to spend too much. Thoughts/ help very welcomed!

Do you have a Decathlon nearby? They are good value for money. TKMax sometimes has ski wear also. If you don't mind second hand, try eBay.

SweepTheHalls · 03/08/2017 09:08

Ebay and tk max. Have a wonderful time, slightly jealous!

OCSockOrphanage · 03/08/2017 09:15

TK Maxx always have loads in about October/November. Get there early for the best selection.

scurryfunge · 03/08/2017 09:17

Also, Mountain Warehouse always seem to be having a sale on.

FadedRed · 03/08/2017 09:18

Aldo will have ski wear in their aisle of randomness in the autumn.

FadedRed · 03/08/2017 09:19

Aldi not bloody Aldo, whoever he is....

HotelEuphoria · 03/08/2017 09:35

DD and I took up skiing earlier this year and we go to an indoor dome.

We picked all our bits up cheaply and in sales at various outlets including Trespass at the indoor dome, Sports Direct online and Mountain Warehouse in one of the Designer Outlets.

HotelEuphoria · 03/08/2017 09:37

Just looked - Sports Direct Online still have ski wear from last year - if you can get your size these are cheap as chips, kids stuff too!

Tatlerer · 03/08/2017 20:36

Thank you everyone! Brilliant tips. Will sharpen my elbows and head to TK Maxx, and look on EBay too (no qualms at all about second hand stuff).

allegretto · 04/08/2017 16:43

Decathlon

Tatlerer · 06/08/2017 19:14

Thank you all so much again for these tips. Next question- apart from a ski jacket and pants, what else will I need for 6 days of skiing in France in Jan (so likely to be cold)? Does this list look ok to you?

  • goggles
  • hat
  • 3 x Uniqlo heat tech or similar long sleeve t shirts (figuring I can where one 2 days straight or is that madness?)
  • 3 x Uniqlo heat tech or similar leggings
  • ski socks (to go over normal socks)- 1 pair?
  • some kind of waterproof boots for resort (hiring ski boots)
  • couple of pairs of jeans, misc tops and jumpers (we're going on a Mark Warner so no raucous clubbing/ apres-ski, will be very casual!)

Am I missing anything? X

No normal sicks under ski socks! You need at least three pairs - if it's hot/sweaty you need a pair each day.
Waterproof gloves and, if it's going to be cold, glove liners.
Also "buffs" i.e. Those tube things you put on your neck.

museumum · 06/08/2017 20:41

And 1-2 mid layers if it's cold such as thin fleece or gilet.

OublietteBravo · 06/08/2017 20:47

It's really worth spending money on decent ski socks. Well-fitting ones make a huge difference. Definitely no socks underneath them.

I find thin fleeces really useful for layering. If it is really cold, then a balaclava can be handy.

clickhappy · 06/08/2017 20:59

Try decathlon too, really cheap, and the brand that a lot of European skiers use.

Tatlerer · 06/08/2017 20:59

Thank you for saving me from an epic ski sock error!

I normally wear regular leggings under my ski pants, I've never shelled out for thermal stuff and always been fine, even in January (actually only in Jan, later in the year I don't bother with leggings as get too hot, but that may just be me).
I second a good pair of waterproof gloves. Decathlon have some brilliant cheap ones.
Also second the cheap fleece layers, plus a good neck tube you can pull up to under your goggles for those freezing chairlift moments.
If hiring a helmet (recommended!) then there is this helmet sock thing that goes over your head, like a microfibres balaclava. A good idea to get if you're iffy about wearing someone else's helmet, but you can get very hot (or again it may just be me).
Cool shades for the sun deck at lunchtime 😎
