Help with bloke trousers? And party clothes?

In a conversation with DH, he said he hates all his casual trousers. They're generally dockersish, but not long enough really.

He refuses to wear jeans. He's never worn them. They probably wouldn't suit him anyway.

He's stupidly tall (6'4"), long legs, not skinny. (His legs are thin, though, I'd say.)

I was thinking maybe cargo trousers? As a change? And if so, from where?

His current 'party' outfit is his regular suit with no tie, which looks quite sad imo. He has a casual jacket, but feels it is tweedy and for a 50-year-old. What sort of trousers work as 'party' trousers? (No, I don't think arseless chaps are what he's looking for ...)

are chinos dockerish? they're pretty versatile, or at least most things from GAP, if he is needing to play really safe. Is he not a man that likes shopping??

NotQuiteCockney · 28/03/2007 08:03

Chinos are exactly what I mean. Do Gap clothes come in 'tall' sizes?

He hates shopping. Maybe even more than I do.

Chinos that are good quality and actually fit would be an improvement, at least.

I know you said no to jeans but if you can get him into a Gap, they have some brilliant cut jeans. My dh bought some loose fit ones a few weeks back and they look great. He normally wears cargo trousers.

H&M are good for cargo pants. Also Zara if you have one as they do really long length trousers.

Pann · 28/03/2007 08:11

don't know about GAP sizing..I'm a regular 5' 11" so never have to wonder into the murky world of the taller bloke.

not like shopping?? gosh, I've got certificates in it!!!

good luck.

NotQuiteCockney · 28/03/2007 08:16

Hmm, I'll have to check gap and H+M for tall sizes. I'm pretty sure Zara won't go big enough, I think his waist is a 40" or something. From what I've seen, Zara are generally quite trim, aren't they?

He really really won't wear jeans.

H&M should do the job - they're dutch aren't they and there are a lot of TALL dutch people. Like Pann, I'm a more regular size so don't know exactly although I do shop there. Their kids' sizes are all big.

If you can't get him into jeans though, what about shoes? A pair of converse or something worn with his suit would really dress it down. I'm not sure what kind of parties you are talking about though I suppose!

NotQuiteCockney · 28/03/2007 08:34

Oh, he has formal dress shoes, that he wears, I think? I'm not even sure. He certainly doesn't wear trainers with a suit, I'm sure of that. He has more and less formal dress shoes.

I'll have to check out H+M blokes next time I'm there - I like H+M for me, so it's not a difficult outing.

Dockers-y things ('khakis' they call them these days) v acceptable for party with a shirt - a really sharp shirt makes up for no jacket.

Casual jackets are a minefield - if you feel he must have one the best kind are the ones made out of chino-type cotton thus though obviously not with the rugby shirt.

No need to force him into jeans if he doesn't like them - cargo trousers or just khakis with a more informal relaxed cut (maybe a bit skatey?) are good.

Gap does trousers in leg lengths so you find the style you like, grab an assistant and say 'I want these in a 40 waist 36 leg' or whatever and let them do the work.

Actually I have realised this is DH's staple summer casual look (though all from Gap or Primark not Johnny)...

NotQuiteCockney · 28/03/2007 09:32

Had noticed the linen trousers on Boden, think DH might well like those - he likes linen shirts, anyway, and has expressed an interest in wearing less structured trousers before. I'll have to get an accurate inseam measurement from him and see what works.

There's a really impressive Big and Tall shop next to Harrods, but it's really geared up for the 7' among us, not regular-sized 6'4". And it's very very American anyway.

Try www.highandmighty.co.uk sorry can't do links.
Having lanky legs myself I can sympathise

NotQuiteCockney · 28/03/2007 09:43

I think we've been to High and Mighty, and not been that impressed. Maybe give them another go.

I guess we could just buy clothes back in Canada - lots of normal shops back home sell trousers unhemmed, and you just get them hemmed to the right length. I don't know why nobody does that here!
