Anyone have a L'Oreal Steam Pod straightener?

I've had mine for about 2 months and I love it, so much better for my hair than my beloved GHD's.

But..... I find that the steam smells 'musty', I use fresh water every time I use it, so it's not that it's been standing and gone stale.

Does anyone else have this problem and is there anything I can do to change it? I was thinking of something like ironing water but for hair! Grin

I had one but can't say I noticed this. It definitely has a "steamy" smell but I wouldn't say it was musty.

I ended up selling mine though as I just found it too bulky.

Yes! I love it! But yes, I notice the smell. I keep meaning to put some vinegar in the water and steam it to try and clean it out.

longdaysandpleasantnights · 31/07/2017 21:17

I don't think it needs cleaning out as the smell was there as soon as I started using it from new.
You'd think they'd have come up with a liquid that you could put in that gave some benefits like shininess or something, they're missing a trick there!
I'm tempted to put a bit of perfume in the water, but I imagine that would dry out my hair so I'll resist.

Are you using tap or distilled water?

Liiinoo · 31/07/2017 23:00

How about a drop of essential oil? lavender or tea tree have cleansing properties and smell very fresh.

I umed and ahed about getting one of these for ages and in the end decided against it.

Reason being, they say high heat brings damage to the hair, yet wet heat (as in steam) is going to be hotter and worse than dry heat (in the same way that I understand a scald to be worse than a dry burn.

If my science is wrong people, do tell me.

Therefore surely the steampod is doing worse things to your hair than regular straighteners. So that put me off, plus people complained about the water pods leaking eventually.

I''m surprised they aren't more known about though. They've been about about 4 years now and onto the second model.

I'm using distilled water, we live in a very hard water area, so anything else would mean death by limescale! A bit of lavender in the water would be lovely Liinoo, and have the added benefit of helping me to drift off to sleep too. Grin

From what I read on many websites user the steam adds moisture back into the hair, and from my own anecdotal experience it does seem to be treating my hair better then my GHD's. It has a variable temperature which helps, I think it goes as low as 140 degrees. It does hurt more when you get too close though because of the steam!

I have them and there is no smell. I use de-ionised water (£1 for a massive bottle in the car section of a large supermarket) which may help.

Piratesandpants · 01/08/2017 07:37

My long thick hair is in much better condition with a steampod than when I used GHDs. If you put a heat protector product on beforehand the steam really locks it into the hair - I can't describe it. I would never go back to GHDs because of the damage they go. Must sort the smell though...

itsalldyingout · 21/01/2018 22:15

Sorry to drag up an old thread and nothing to add to OP other than I also use de-ionised water in mine and have never had a problem - though I have used it from the start and have had it at least 3 years.

In that 3 years my hair has improved and maintained condition. GHDs wrecked my hair.

Also to add, I use it at 190 degrees on a day-to-day basis, 200 if I'm going out - the extra 10 degrees makes a huge difference. These temperatures are lower than GHDs, but still give fabulous results.

I have pouffy, fine, knotty, semi-curly and all-round difficult hair. Steampod has transformed it and keeps it in my style until I wash it again.

I'd thoroughly recommend it to anyone with out-of-condition or difficult hair. It goes through mine like a hot knife through butter and leaves a great finish on the first pass.

I take it to my hairdresser for my appointments and she's always surprised at the ease it copes with my hair. We did a half-and-half test - GHDs one half of my head, Steampod on the other. The difference in use and with results was obvious. She asks her boss every time I'm there to get them in, but sadly the GHD PR machine has done it's magic and most clients ask for them.

If you're a GHD user (or other brand), find a salon that uses Steampod and take yours along for the half head test. I guarantee you'll be surprised at just how good the Steampod is.

I purchased these also and I think they are amazing. My hair has never been in better condition. Have to agree with musty smell comments but it's a small price to pay for having shiny smooth hair at the end of it. Well worth the money.

Hi did anyone manage to get rid of the musty smell. I have the same problem and mine is only a few months old. Makes my hair smell. Thanks

Jacquil6 · 16/01/2023 05:59

I have mine a while and loved it . But stopped using it because of the musty smell . I tried putting my coffee machine cleaner through but the smell remain. I also put lavender but the musty smell overpowers that. Might try the vinegar. Would love to be able to use it again.J
