Is this suitable for black tie?

Corporate do, described as a ball but I suspect it'll be more formal dinner.
Funky, modern venue rather than country house.
I'd prefer not long as I'm unlikely to wear it again. I'd imagine there'll be a mix of long and short.
I'm not a statement dresser but do want to make an effort.
50, tall, size 12, adequate arms, thick waist.

Hmm, it's nice but if it's described as a ball then I think you might feel a bit underdressed

PastysPrincess · 31/07/2017 12:51

It's a nice dress but that says office wear to me rather than a ball. I agree with @IdentifiesAsYoda

I don't know how you are with colour but this makes more of a statement , whilst being a similar shape and length, and has really clever placement of black to create more of a waist

It's more cocktail dress than black tie event dress

RoganJosh · 31/07/2017 13:02

Has there been a previous similar event? Can you find some photos online? They can vary so much.

Loopytiles · 31/07/2017 13:04

On the "underdressed" side IMO but as you say some women will wear short dresses so should be fine.

BikeRunSki · 31/07/2017 13:06

It's a bit daytimey

DereksGotATail · 31/07/2017 13:07

I think it will be fine as long as you're sure that others won't be in ball gowns.

Well it's more cocktail dress than black tie, and could even be worn to work or a funeral!

I think you can avoid a long dress but still look more "dressy" than that if I'm honest.

Feawen · 31/07/2017 13:45

I think that dress would be fine. It's at the casual end of the spectrum, but ime women often wear cocktail-length dresses to black-tie events, and long gowns can look old fashioned unless the venue is a traditional one. A silver cuff would look good and add some extra interest.

Thanks for the comments. It probably is a bit too weddingy.
This occasion is a first so it's all a bit unknown.

RandomWordsandaNumber5 · 31/07/2017 14:14

Bit too dress down for a black tie do I think. Bit more glamour would be better for the occasion. For me, black tie means a cocktail dress at least.
