If you have plantar fasciitis what are you wearing on your feet?

I am in agony having seemingly developed planter fasciitis over the last few months and after a day walking around in trainers yesterday I can barely walk today! interested to know what helps other people.

Fit flops helped for me, at one point I was reliant on a walking stick it was so bad.

I think that wearing something with a heel helps, I think that my birkenstocks helped contribute to me developing it in the first place.

WitchDancer · 30/07/2017 21:26

Sketchers all the way!

stonecircle · 30/07/2017 22:02

Don't know how anyone can walk in Birkenstocks. Honestly - give Skechers a go!!

Wh0Kn0wsWhereTheTimeGoes · 30/07/2017 22:04

Different things for different people, I can walk around all day in Birkenstocks and only last 5 mins in Skechers.

SpringtoSummer · 31/07/2017 07:33

Yes, definitely varies. Sketchers always bring it in for me as far too soft.

FinallyHere · 31/07/2017 07:53

Plantar fasciitis can be a symptom of tight calf and foot muscles. The suggestion to wear a slight heel, or soft soles, is to relieve the stretch required of the calf and foot muscle, so can be helpful soft term to relieve the symptoms. To really get rid of the pain once and for all, would need a program of stretches and foot strengthening exercises.

Everything that helped me is contained in the book from Katy Bowmann here

Learn how good a calf stretch can feel...

I have this too - Fit Flops have solved it completely for me I don't wear anything else ever- luckily they now do boots, ballerinas, trainers etc (and I have the full range Smile). If I wear any other type of shoes I'm in extreme pain v quickly so I haven't worn anything else for years.
They have a 70% off sale at the moment- try a pair you won't regret it!

Flamingosarepink · 31/07/2017 08:39

I was so bad with PF in 2015 i could barely walk. I was going to physio dpending 40 minutes twice a day doing exercises to no real avail.
After a friends recommendation i splashed out on a pair of fitflops. I wore them all last summer and as time went by my symptoms eased. By early October last year i was "cured". I still get twinges etc now and again but have to wear heels for work and live in slippers at home. This summer the twinges have lessened as im back in my fitflops at any opportunity.

Certainly the best 50 quid ive spent!

HermiioneSnape02 · 31/07/2017 08:45

I haven't suffered so badly this summer but have stuck with shoes that have a little heel, Trainers with insoles in, (from Amazon) or my birkenstocks.
I bought these sandals
and have been wearing them for a few weeks and they are super comfortable. Although I have tried to swop between them and Trainers with my insoles in.

Loopytiles · 31/07/2017 08:47

Had this last summer after being on my feet more than usual and wearing too-big ballerinas for the commute (incl walking on concrete for 60 mins a day) and it went away after started wearing Sketchers go walk for commuting, fit flops for in the home. Still wear any shoes at work (desk job).

GriseldaChop · 31/07/2017 08:50

I've had it on and off for a few years now and the shoes that really work for me are fit flops. I have sandals, shoes, boots and slippers and can really tell if I've worn something else when I wake up the next morning. Couldn't recommend them more.

woodhill · 31/07/2017 08:53

I tend to get it a little in right foot, thanks for tips.

MrsWooster · 31/07/2017 09:00

Another vote for fitflops. I love birkenstock but they proved too flat and, as PPs said, anything flat make it much worse.

AlternativeTentacle · 31/07/2017 09:11

The only thing that helped me - and I had it for 2 years - was crocs and sketchers. I hate both but turns out I quite like walking! So it was a sacrifice worth making.

I still wear them regularly to keep the PF from attacking again.

Whitetulipofpeace · 31/07/2017 09:24

Fit flops have really worked for mine. I've just been away for a week and was walking every day with no issues at all with the PF and it was very painful before. Calf stretches are important too before getting out of bed. I never go barefoot round the house any more either.

lazycrazyhazy · 31/07/2017 09:28

Birkenstocks helped me and I had some insoles made specially from old fashioned shoe maker in Marylebone which were expensive but helped a lot initially. I always wear Birkenstocks or slippers with proper supportive soles around he house since and have not relapsed yet.

aliceinwanderland · 31/07/2017 09:31

Dlx "technical trainer" from Trespass. Good to wear anywhere other than the office.

converseandjeans · 31/07/2017 09:36

Crocs around the house. Birkenstocks in summer and wedge heel Chelsea boots in Autumn/Winter. Just bought sketchers and it's like walking on air!

ProphetOfDoom · 31/07/2017 09:37

Until a lovely doctor at the hospital stuck a needle into the side of my foot, I wore super-cushiony Fitflop wedge sandals.

converseandjeans · 31/07/2017 17:49

prophet did it cure your PF? Mine mostly gone now thankfully.

ProphetOfDoom · 31/07/2017 18:30

converseandjeans I'd put up with PF for about 9months, physio/stretching exercises weren't helping although my Fitflops took the edge off.

Got referred to my local small hospital to a specialist who put a steroid/anti-inflammatory injection into the side of my heel (not the base of the heel like some do apparently) and within 3 days the PF was gone. She said if it worked it might only be for 6m but if so she'd just reinject but I've not had any issues for 3-4 years. I'm occasionally a little tender and think uh-oh so am aware it could return but I always try and wear cushioned heeled flats.

Rightpivotturn · 31/07/2017 18:54

Another one here whose life was literally transformed by FitFlops. Before that, I'd have regular recurrences of PF, and it was excruciating, even with insoles and after seeing a physio for exercises (calf stretches etc) - they helped but didn't prevent it.

Changing to Fitflops was wonderful and I now mix them with Hotter - often laughed at on here, but blissfully comfortable and supportive.

EsmesRedPetticoat · 01/08/2017 21:44

Ok so I'm currently wearing s very battered pair of fitflop clogs that my MIL left behind last time she came to stay as a pair of house shoes. I'll probably take these camping too for around the camp site as they already look pretty trashed so don't matter. I've ordered a pair of Birkenstock gizeh's which hopefully will come before I go away.
I've got some foot and calf exercises to try out and I'll be resurrecting my old physio excercises to strengthen my ankles, knees and hips because they certainly can't make anything worse!

OP posts:
Wh0Kn0wsWhereTheTimeGoes · 03/08/2017 07:13

Mine has improved dramatically over the lsst few weeks, so I slacked off on the stretching and massaging, but it is creeping back, I definitely need to make these long term habits. Going to look at the Fitflop sale.

ladymariner · 03/08/2017 07:27

I'm with Prophet I was in absolute agony with PF and had a steroid injection into the side of my heel, it wasn't pleasant (!!) but my god, it's worked!! I'd totally recommend you get to your GP and have one.
