Soft summer - do I need a cool-toned hair colour?

A quick question re. dying hair... I'm pretty certain I'm a soft summer, and my original hair colour was mousey brown. I've been dying my hair for donkeys years, various shades of blond and brown. I'm pondering what colour to go for next (hair appt tomorrow).

So... I always thought that soft summers needed cool-toned hair. Whenever I ask for ash brown / ash blond, my hairdresser always steers me to a warmer shade "so that I don't look washed out". Have I got it wrong? Do I actually need a warmer shade?

If you are a Summer then yes, you need an ash brown or ash blond.

Your hairdresser is wrong, cool toned skin needs cool toned hair. It drives me crazy when hairdressers say this all the time

Agree, hairdressers struggle with ash tones, ( I'm winter) so have decided to do it myself now ( semi permanent mid ash brown ). Colour is as good, condition maybe not so good as salon but at a tenth of the price I'm going with it for now! Be firm and say cool / ash / no red if you're paying!

There was a phase for 'caramel' hints being slipped in a while ago, always made my highlights look brassy. I eventually twigged and insisted on cool tones only and it made such a difference. I've now let them grow out and have distinctly cool grey tones!

Ah, it's unanimous so far then! I need to put my big girl pants on tomorrow then and get my cool tones back Grin
