White Stuff

Should white stuff be avoided generally. I like their plain coloured pieces but is it all generally a bit Mumsy?
(Don't want to spark a debate with use of the word mumsy!!)

I think you have to choose carefully to avoid the mumsy pieces but I avoid now as doesn't wash well

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/07/2017 15:48

Why use the word 'mumsy' then?

They have a couple of nice things and a lot of not nice things. Their sizing is rather peculiar. I see a lot of their stuff in charity shops and it doesn't appear to wear terribly well, by the look of it. I really like their shops - spacious changing rooms and friendly, helpful staff, and their focus on natural fibres, but the only thing I've ever bought from there is a handbag.

This dress is lovely. The only reason I didn't buy it is because I find linen really itchy.

BikeRunSki · 28/07/2017 15:51

I generally find one thing a season that I like, but the quality is generally abysmal.

TonicAndTonic · 28/07/2017 15:57

The prices seem to have gone up and the quality down of late. Last time I was in there they seemed to be charging £40 for a fairly plain t shirt! Agree that the sizing can be a bit interesting. I'm normally a size smaller in their tops than I am most other places. It's not generally a great place for people that don't like prints.

Also the shops are franchises, so it varies which parts of the range they choose to stock in-store at each shop. My local one seems to pick all the worst stuff each season! But they still have nice stuff online. I've had some really nice pairs of winter boots from their, in fact generally I like their winter clothes a lot more than their summer ones!

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 28/07/2017 16:00

Some nice items but agree you definitely have to try on to ensure the size is right you can't depend on their sizing.

Itsnothingoriginal · 28/07/2017 18:03

I have a lovely WS handbag - well made and perfect size!

I think WS is doing for the over 60s demographic what M&S should be doing! Store is always full of older women when I go in there. I like some of the prints but the sizing is very weird as others have said! Have a few of their jersey shirts which are nice colours and wash well but not everything from there seems good quality for the price.

Joinourclub · 28/07/2017 19:11

I've bought a few dresses from there for work. Always get compliments in them. I don't think of it as mumsy, more 'recent retiree' sort of age.

SesameSparkle · 28/07/2017 19:38

I used to buy a few things from there as the clothes worked well on my old body shape when I first lost weight, and I liked some of the colourful stuff. Also the jeans are good for someone on the shorter side as their regular length is 31". After a while I lost interest, especially when I realised how many women in my work shop there - at one point I knew 2 other people with an identical dress to mine, and a 3rd who wore another colourway. Now I've lost more weight, their clothes don't suit my bodyshape anymore. I rarely go in, except on the odd discount day. I agree it is a nice place to shop - in my local one you can even get a free cuppa and biccies!

sowhatusernameisnttaken · 28/07/2017 19:40

Oh god I'm only 38!!!! Come to think
Of it when I go in to stores they are full of older women!! I quite like the shopping experience in store and they are good online too. Hmmm....

Don't worry sowhat being older isn't catching Smile

I'm surprised to hear of its popularity with my age group as it's far too floppy and droopy for me these days. I would have thought it was better suited to the firm of body.

What I do like about them is that they do colour and you can still find natural fabrics there, although they're not particularly good quality. They're also very friendly and I've noticed they don't set the dogs on you if you have a small child in tow.

Judydreamsofhorses · 28/07/2017 20:45

I think the clothes always look as if they've been washed loads of times, even when they're brand new. It's not my bag, but my friend wears a lot of their stuff and looks great. I have tights from there (coloured opaques which can be quite hard to find) and they are brilliant.

sowhatusernameisnttaken · 28/07/2017 22:56

That's true about natural fabrics flo I think maybe that's what draws me there as I can still find a cotton or linen top which is becoming increasingly hard to find.

Eek! I've just bought two tops from there, well tunics I suppose. Perfect for me as I'm tall, worried they won't wash well now, better hang on to receipt...

LunaTheCat · 29/07/2017 14:43

I quite like white stuff in small amounts - the whole top to toe look can be a bit twee. I visit the UK yearly and usually come home with one or two bits . This summers collection however was dire - no nice linen or cotton . The reversible skirts which where always cotton now viscose, knitwear awful., lots synthetics . Yuk.

PollyPerky · 29/07/2017 15:51

I'm ambivalent about WS. Liked it years ago but now...?
My local branch was full of the very elderly this week- I mean 70s+ and not stylish at that! I think they expect to buy Per Una look a likes!

I find most of the prints now garish and patterns are far too big for a petite person.

The quality isn't great- knitwear bobbles like mad and I've had holes around the seams in T-s and cardies quite quickly.

Very occasionally I'll buy a T shirt or jumper but their default price for knitwear is £45 or £49 and it's def not worth that. I never buy anything without a 20% discount.
