Hair Breaking, frizzing & splitting

I'm in my early 40's and colour my hair (roots) every two months - due to premature greying at almost 20.

I use a permanent ash light brown (Garnier) no peroxide or amonia.

I've noticed when getting up in the morning that the side I sleep on (left) a small patch of hair was getting really frizzy, and had broken off in places!

It's in the under section of hair and not obvious yet - despite being 2 inches shorter than the rest (just passed shoulders, all one length Bob).

I'm mortified and keep putting off going to the hairdressers! I just don't understand why it's happened?

Any thoughts?

thanks. X

Do you condition your hair regularly? Is it dry?

Any permanent colour, especially if used regularly, will damage the hair. Nutrisse actually makes my hair incredibly dry (which is a real shame as I'm after an ashy light brown but I know it doesn't suit my hair at all.) Hair can also change and become dryer as we get older.

I'd say start with some deep conditioning treatments, try coconut oil left on overnight (doesn't suit everyone but worth a try), get a good cut and perhaps a silk pillowcase which prevents hair breakage.

Palmers do a great coconut oil protein pack that is brilliant for damaged hair. I'd leave it on overnight in a shower cap and not use heat on your hair for a while.

Thanks casestudy I will have a look in Superdrug.
How often would it need to be used i.e: one off or once a week?

Thanks picnmixer.
Yes, I condition my hair after every wash - I wash my hair every other day.

I didn't realise that colouring my roots every couple of months could dry it out - I thought products were nicer and gentler these days!

I will book this week, to have a trim and try the coconut oil as a deep conditioning.

My conditioner is a tresemme one to de-frizz 🙄 . It has silicones in it and googling tells me this is bad.

I need to reeducate myself I think.

Thanks. X

You could be me, I came back from loving abroad in a very hot country, I dyed my hair regularly with cheap permanent hair colour, never got it cut and my new hair dresser had to cut it off, I now have a short bob which I love, I use a thick conditioner, I've bought a shampoo with argen oil in and a miracle leave in hair oil after. I no longer use permanent hair dye and so far my hair has improved.

Superdrug have an Afro-Caribbean hair section that has some great moisturising products, so that could be a great start. A lot of the products also don't have silicons.

I would split one pack and use it twice a week in your first week, and then a second pack as a one off in the second week. Then see how it's looking.

Thanks Buster and case study - I really appreciate the replies and advice.

We only have a small Superdrug where I live and may not have that section - however, our local tesco do have a fab afro Caribbean section so I will go there tomorrow after work.

I know I should stop colouring my hair for a while, but it just looks awful when Tue regrowth and fading happens - I am a mix of grey, white, silver and what is left of some original mousey brown.

My hair doesn't hold colour very well anymore either - semi permanent is gone in a fortnight.

Thanks. X

Do you blow dry? I had the same thing and it turned out my ancient hairdryer was overheating and basically toasting my hair off (along the parting line which should have given it away). Worth checking anyway!

Osmo products are fantastic and available on Amazon - the heat protector and the deep conditioner treatment I can't recommend enough.

Thank you everyone.

I bought some coconut oil today - so I have coated my hair in it, have put a plastic shower hat on and wrapped a towel around my head. If I can sleep comfortably then I'll try to leave washing until tomorrow morning!

Fingers crossed.
