My redeeming feature has always been my hair . Long , naturally blonde and fairly thick .
but..since i turned 40 ,18 months ago , it's becoming increasingly thin , flat , falling out loads when i wash it . i've suddenly got wispy bits EVERYWHERE and grey bits . I know it sounds a bit shallow but i already have plenty of big issues to deal with and this is starting to feel like the straw that broke the camels back .
please tell me i can do soemthing about this.

Sounds like the big issues could be the trouble. Neighbour I have is about your age and the same thing happened when her disabled son had to undergo several operations. She told me that she had to take her stress in hand. Luckily all is well now and her hair is just fine. Boots do a shampoo NaturVital hair loss shampoo which has been trialed so you can look it up. My aunt had trouble with thinning hair and she said it was good so I tried it. It is made with natural ingredients and.so far it has been fine. You can get a conditioner as well

Both products are £9.99 each. They last for ages as you don't need much.

My hair has improved vastly since I started having Floridix liquid. It took about six months to work.

Do you eat well OP? Plenty of healthy fats, protein and properly hydrated? Have you had your thyroid checked? I have hypothyroidism and I become very "grey" whenever my thyroid function is low (not just my hair - my skin and nails suffer terribly too).

Stress does terrible things to the body and whilst external treatments such as specialist shampoos etc are worthwhile, it is more important to address the issue using diet, sleep and exercise. I speak from experience, having entered my 40s with awful panic attacks and coping with the issues surrounding eldest DC and his condition. It's taken a while but my body has slowly started to recover since taking this advice.
