Help! Can I make a jacket waterproof??

I just bought a jacket (Barbour waterlily) thinking it would be waterproof, I Googled "waterproof stylish jacket" and it came up; stupidly I believed it.
Anyhow, it isn't waterproof, I got soaked yesterday. Shop won't accept a return obviously.
So do you know of a product, spray, cream, whatever, that I could use; if at all possible?
Thanks!!

If it's advertised as waterproof and isn't they should take it back.

I think Millets sell stuff that restores waterproof jackets, that would probably work.

I've just googled it, it's a cotton jacket,of course that's not going to be waterproof! Grin

How disappointing! I think you need to look for a proper waterproof one.

This stuff

Kione · 22/07/2017 14:25

Its not advertised as waterproof on the page I bought it from, but Google brought it up.
Will something that restores waterproof, work on something that it wasn't to start with?? I might just take it to the shop, no Millets here though, there is a Mountain Warehouse.

Oh thanks Bayleaves! It says "adds or restores whaterproof" so might be worth a try!
Dame I know, Google directed me to it and I just didn't looked more into it Sad I am really dissapointed, specially as now I found very similar ones that are waterproof, but I just can't spend that money again!

Surely when you opened the package you must have realised that the fabric wasn't waterproof Confused

OhDearToby · 22/07/2017 14:35

There isn't anything that will make it waterproof. Sprays will add some (but not much if it's just cotton) water resistance to the fabric but the seams will still let in water.

I'd sell it in eBay and buy a properly waterproof one.

The waterproofing stuff they sell in outdoor shops can be used on canvas and shoes etc, that aren't sold as waterproof. I reckon you could try it on your jacket as it's cotton - you might want to test an area first. If it's machine washable you could run it through the machine with tech wash to remove any coatings on the fabric, then follow with a wash in waterproofing (I have nikwax). That might proof the fabric a little, although water could still get through the seams and pockets.

Thanks all, I will think what to do...
No I didn't realise when I opened it because its not soft and I just don't have much of a clue!

Look in an 'outdoor' shop where they sell camping /walking clothing. We have Goretex Jackets & get special liquid wash to waterproof and it is reinforced by putting the clothes in the clothes drier afterwards

Clembarrass · 22/07/2017 18:50

You can get special waterproofing washes designed specifically for cotton - Nikwax make one.
