Pearls

Twenty years ago my mother bought be a long string of pearls to mark a special achievement. I appreciated the gesture now and still do- It´s a classic piece of jewellery. They were quite - about four or five hundred pounds back then.

The problem is I have only ever worn them twice. I old fashioned and self'conscious in them. There are enough to wrap around to get a double collar and I prefer this. They are very beautiful and I wouldn´t want to sell them really. It just seems a pity to have them sitting in a box.

What do you think of pearls and what should I do with them? Keep them as an heirloom because it was a very special present? Have them made into a collar with a pretty clasp and potentially still not wear them? Or just find a way of wearing them that looks good?

What do you think of pearls?

this is making me think about wearing my necklace that husband bought me around 15 years ago. how often should they be restrung? I would hate to wear them and the string break and lose them

Pearls are very popular where I am - Paris. Mainly earrings but also rings, bracelets and necklaces.

People aren't particularly smart when wearing them - I'm in a fairly casual work office

I'm looking into buying a string of pearls & I didn't realise they can be differently coloured. If I'm buying just the one set, should I go for white/cream pearls?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 21/07/2017 13:27

I wouldn't wear pearls when I'm dressing up, I wear them when I'm casual.

Just looking online & there's all kind of notions about them, like adult women wear a size of 7mm or larger, anything smaller is for a child & that a woman's first pearl necklace should be white pearls & the size of the pearl also depends on how tall & fat you are.

I had no idea!! Its a whole new world

Sorry. I just saw this. Thanks for the links.

I wonder if I have the right size pearls? I don´t think they are exactly the right colour for me (yellowish and I am a redhead). I could be out with my pearls feeling all special and be looking like a fool! Who knew.

I have a lovely black pearl necklace and wear it with loads of things.. I dont know where you live but can highly recommend isle of wight pearl for restringing and redesign.. They charged me just £15 to restring and hand-tie mine when the clasp broke. the also remodelled some of my mothers.

watch the crown on netflix really makes you want to wear pearls. And yes just wear with v casual clothes.

OCSockOrphanage · 21/07/2017 22:12

Pearls are lovely if you wear them with T shirts and nonchalance, like beads. Worn with a serious outfit they become very formal. But they are becoming fashionable again. I got mine out today for the first time in ages, but they are grey, large freshwater and unmatched. And quite large and statementy, but not expensive. In NZ, 10 years ago, they were about £60. They came from an art gallery and are really beautifully strung and knotted, which makes them look fabulous,

Oh I have some too, which I got for a big birthday. I think I've only ever worn them a couple of times for formal events. I wouldn't dream of letting go of them - I think I've just been waiting for them to come back into fashion. You've also inspired me to go try them on and think about how I could style then.
