Going blonde to better disguise the grey?

I'm 42, have dyed my hair since teen years so original colour long lost but sort of an unspectacular chestnut brown.

Now roots coming through really salt and pepper, mainly salt, and seems to overnight go from 'book hair cut' to 'scary badger head' overnight. It looks bloody awful.

I'm considering gradually going lighter to a dark blonde. I'm just nervous as I've never had blonde hair post 7 years old. All other colours including purple, yes, but never blonde.

Has anyone done this and how has it worked for you? Is it going to look terrible?

I'm not ready to embrace the grey!

I've gone for blonde with highlights. It works great. When my hair was dark brown, I looked bad in three weeks. Now, I get my colour done every 12 weeks.

How blonde did you go? I told my sister I was thinking of doing this and she was horrified but I suspect she's picturing me with some kind of Courtney Love/Bet Lynxh hybrid up so. Confused

I've done this. Caramel base colour and ashy blonde highlights. Looks fine and I don't so much resemble a badger when the regrowth comes. It was getting to the point where I was expecting Brian May to start protecting me.

Kalinka I'm loving the Brian May image, brilliant.

I think I am gonna go for it. It's scary but not as frightful as I look when my roots are due!

I always think greying hair looks far better coloured blonde rather than dark, also there are so many shades/types of blonde to choose from there is bound to be something that suits you. Plus the texture of hair with some bleach in it works better with the drier texture of grey hair. I think darker coloured hair with grey is just too high maintenance; I used to work as a receptionist in an expensive salon and a woman used to come in every 12 days to have her roots done. She ended up spending a fortune!

I've gone platinum blonde and love it. I tried dark blonde/dirty blonde/honey and it was soooo boring, it's ubiquitous. I'm white round my temples and salt and pepper on top: the roots show after three weeks or so but look ok

I'm completely grey but have dyed my hair dark for years. A few years ago I went gradually blonde in an attempt to go longer between due jobs but I looked awful, completely beige. So washed out. Now I'm a mid ash brown and I just use root concealer powder when my grey comes through - the stuff's a revelation. I only need to do my roots every 6 weeks instead of every three, and I use it on my brows too. It's only about three quid from Amazon and one pack lasts months.

googles root concealer

Oooh thanks all Smile

I have hair colour similar to yours, which was starting to go grey, over time have gone completely blonde as it minimises the grey regrowth much better. Started out with highlights but now have an overall colour. Try to find the colour that suits your skin tone. I was already pale with blue eyes so pp think I've always been blonde!

I went with very white blonde highlights and it looks brilliantissimo, everyone says it takes 10 years off.
